Curiously enough live action production on Shin Ultraman finished in 2019. Shinji Higuchi appeared at a concert type venue for Godzilla music in November 2019 and said as much:

https://encount.press/archives/10560/

Google Translation of first line from last paragraph: After the film, director Shinji Higuchi (54), who said he had finished shooting the movie "Shin Ultraman" (released in 2021), appeared on the stage as a surprise.

2020 has seemingly been all post-production which while it can be hampered by Covid-19 restrictions post is also more flexible to remote working, smaller crews and in general less at risk because workarounds can be achieved that filming doesn't afford.

I would guess since Eva is going for January we could anticipate Shin Ultraman to be a Summer 2021 release. Maybe Toho will aim for a similar release pattern to Shin Godzilla (July 29, 2016) with a shift to June or late August to avoid the Olympics.

My knowledge of the Ultraman character is..... nothing, I know nothing about Ultraman and my interest in this film is solely for Anno and the Shin Godzilla crew - but Ultraman is a huge character in Japan right? A big summer release seems ideal no?

I agree with Shin Ultraman being a summer release. I imagine both Khara and Toho want to release it during its original intended release date, instead of the costly process of delaying. This is also probably why Shin will be released this soon-a summer release might be better in some way, but it would create a friction between two huge projects from pretty much two same companies. Never engage in fierce competition with yourself.

A trailer before Shin is totally plausible and would be cool. I'm interested in just about anything that Anno does at this point.

Ah, I think I might have missed that.
Well then I wouldm't be surprised.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

It kinda flew under everyone's radar. No major announcement was made or anything. Shinji Higuchi just kinda casually said it one day.

I'm guessing Shin Ultraman must be a heavy FX film cause any release date in 2021 is more than twice the post-production time Shin Godzilla had. Godzilla shot September to October 2015, post work began November 2015 and was in theaters end of July 2016. This likely finished live action work in October or November 2019 and won't be in theaters until well over a year - maybe over a year and a half - later.

Very curious to see what this film will be.

I love how stoic Anno has been in all of his goofy promotional photos for these live-action Toho films. Like, everyone is clearly doing a thing, and Anno's just like "Yes, the thing. I shall participate."

Or maybe he's just low-key depressed all the time, but is coping through it while making movies.

Google translate said “Early Summer” so I wouldn’t be surprised if Shin Ultraman took the end of June 2021 release date I originally expected the last Eva film to take.

So we thinking first trailer attached to Thrice Upon A Time or will they be nicer and release it with the first of the 4DX re-releases?

I have absolutely nothing to base this on but I'm thinking there will be around four to six months between Evangelion 3.0+1.0 & Shin Ultraman.

So if Eva drops in the Summer maybe Ultraman will be an end of the year release.

Again, this is based on absolutely nothing.

Wasn't it supposed to be an early summer release? I don't know if that will change necessarily.

Well, this is interesting! I don't know anything in-depth about Ultraman, so this film will most likely be my first Ultraman "experience", heh. And yes, it does look a lot like Shin Godzilla visually, which is quite surprising, especially since it's not Anno directing. I wonder if he maybe tried to replicate Anno's style (which some of the shots in this teaser do seem to hint at). Also, am I the only one who thinks the CGI looks a bit bad? I don't think it will necessarily make or break my ultimate opinion on this film when it gets released, but it did look a bit unrealistic.

I am quite excited ultimately and am looking forward to this film-anything with Anno's hand on it is a must-watch.

I'm already loving it! Lots of EVA and Shin Godzilla similarities, hope Anno can play with the kaijus much like he did with the Angels, the CGI looks top notch too, even better than ShinGoji.
*petrifies and is left floating adrift in space, where it will outlast Evangelion: Thrice Upon a Time 3.0+1.0, as an eternal testament that the human race existed*

Bye bye all of Evangelion and Evageeks.
When you feel sad remember that it's always epic Spinosaurus aegyptiacus time, you were born in the same planet as S. aegyptiacus, how cool is it?
I never understood why people hate the Rebuild because it's different and love the Series, can we just love it all without creating dilemmas and unnecessary discussions?

Be careful of 3.0+1.0 spoilers

The effects seem solid to me. I don't know Ultraman at all but the effects seem very much in line with Shin Godzilla and other kaiju movies.

But definitely the big surprise is how much it looks exactly like Shin Godzilla. I was under the assumption that since Shinji Higuchi mostly handled the effects work on that film and Anno worked with the actors on location this film was going to look very different so it's interesting to see similar compositions, camera movements and lighting in this.

I can't find who the cinematographer for this was but I have to believe it's Kosuke Yamada, the DP for Shin Godzilla, and the same crew.

Is Shiro Sagisu doing the music do we know? He did the scores for Higuchi's two Attack on Titan movies so I assume yes but haven't seen a confirmation.

Yeah this looks fucking awesome. In one of the worse days of my recent life, this reminded me why I like film to begin with.

Oh, also...did Anno's "planning" credit include storyboarding? Becuase man does this look Anno.
Not to take credit from Higuchi who is accomplished in many ways too. Also they have worked together so long, maybe it's normal for it to be hard to distinguish.

Either that or Higuchi has drastically changed up how he films stuff. I admit to not having seen all his films but I certainly don't remember his two Attack on Titan movies having aggressive angles like this and a quick scan at them shows a more classical use of framing.

This will be a very curious movie indeed.

And sorry to hear you had a bad day. I hope things pick up for you.
