While accepting this as Mari's backstory in Rebuild may resolve some questions -- for example, why she calls Gendo "Gendo-kun" -- it only raises others. I just rewatched parts of 2.22, and I am having a hard time squaring them with Sadamoto's backstory. Mari strongly implies that the Eva Unit-05 sortie was her first time syncing with an Eva. If that is the case, then it's unclear how the Curse of Eva would have taken hold in her 15 years earlier.

Additionally, following Eva Unit-05's destruction, Mari says, "I do feel kind of bad about using these adults to get what I want." If she was 16 years old in 1998 (as in the manga), that would make her 33 years old in 2015. Even with the Curse of Eva, I find it hard to believe that a 33-year-old Mari would distinguish herself from "adults."

You're totally right, and that's because Sadamoto obviously only takes the Mari from Q into account, so I guess NTE Mari is a different entity. This might be due to the fact, that Mari's character was basically crafted as they were going, resulting in idiosyncrasies in her backstory. Which is not good story telling. But I hope Anno can make it work somehow. But if Shin fails to present a better explanation for her existence in the continuity of NTE, I am will be content with the Manga's backstory. I'm easily to be pleased.

...So then who in the world is that surely-a-spoiler character supposed to be? I mean I have a guess, but I'm more than a little surprised that particular look would show up in the Sadamotoverse at all given its roots.

And honestly, what's the point of introducing [REDACTED] to the manga NOW, now that Shinji and Asuka's fate, hell, all of EARTH'S fate has been pretty much sealed?

What purpose, from a story telling point of view, does it serve introducing [REDACTED] now?

There's no purpose really, Sadamoto wanted to make a flash-back and decided to add You-Know-Who because why the fuck not? Maybe he just enjoy drawing You-Know-Who and thus decided to add it here, and as you noted, it doesn't influence at all the story.

yeah, if "that person" was in her teens when Yui was still alive, that would make that person in about their twenties when the events of the show and manga take place. Totally different from the way "that person" is depicted in a certain series of movies.

Not out yet (from what I've looked around), but I'm sure all the Limited Edition extras will be eventually. They were with Japanese LE 13, after all.

Well, for me it's pretty obvious that Sdamoto's intention was marketing up to eleven. After the horrible ending, it has no sense. Just a "remember Final/Shin is coming" memento.

I think we shouldn't be brushing this off as "just a sadamoto thing"

For a start, [REDACTED] acting older than she looks has been a thing since her intro. Anno himself comments it on the CRC, saying he gave her some dated mannerism in the intro to give her a "old man" feel.
About the personality issue, between 1998 to 2015 there are more than enough events to completely change how one person works, there is the second impact and yui's death for a beginning, furthermore [REDACTED] has many moments she looks serious on the movies.
And finally there is all that odd stuff she said in the last movie. And that curse.

I find that if Sadamoto worked to make an extra about this specific character who had no backstory beforehand it would be odd if that story was just "there" and didn't mean anything at all.
