Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
During Shinj's debriefing on the Wunder; when Ritsuko exposits about the DSS Choker, what exactly did she say in the original Japanese?
00:25:39 {リツコ}.........故にあなたには DSSチョーカーを装着させてあります。
00:25:39 {Ritsuko}.......As a result, we've installed the DSS Choker on you.
In the Dub she said that they had outfitted Shinji with a DSS Choker.
Did she say "the" as in only one Choker exist, or "a" as in multiple exist. I don't know any Japanese not to mention it's grammar.
lately, I've been wondering if the other pilots have Chokers on them. You can't tell if they have one on because the plug-suits would cover over it.
If this has been discussed before, (sorry i'm new) please link me to the appropriate thread.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
Japanese has no articles, so deciding whether to use "a(n)" or "the" is typically left to guesswork.
I'd see which option the official khara subtitles on the BD go with.

What exactly would a direct translation say? (we installed DSS Choker on you)
By "official khara subtitles" do you mean Funi-subs?
The Blu-ray has two sub-tracks, both use "a" for the dialogue.
So nothing in the dialogue would indicate the quantity of the object?

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
I believe the "home video" subs (or something like that) are the ones done by khara's translator. Closest we have to the official word, so if they say "a" just roll with it.
No; Japanese typically leaves that sort of thing to context clues. There's no need to specify how many chokers because it's clear from context what they're talking about: the one around Shinji's neck. Nothing is being communicated about whether or not others hypothetically exist.

Both sub tracks are credited to Dan Kanemitsu, iirc.
There was that sketch by Yamashita with Mari and Asuka both wearing some type of collar, so they at least kicked the idea around in development, it seems.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
How would that make sense if the theatrical subs were created by Funi before khara got directly involved? Source needed.

I thought it was in the English credits on the dvd, but it just says "Japanese Translation: Dan Kanemitsu (Courtesy of Studio Khara)"

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
Ah, missed out on that one. Thanks. ...So then what the heck is the difference between the two sets of subs? Funi mentioned khara subs being included on the BD like it was a big deal, but how is it a big deal if Kanemitsu prepared the theatrical subs in the first place? Something doesn't make sense here.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
What doesn't make sense is even providing two sets of subs without (a) a good reason and (b) saying what that reason is!
"Being human, having your health; that's what's important." (from: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi )
"As long as we're all living, and as long as we're all having fun, that should do it, right?" (from: The Eccentric Family )

Before 3.0+1.0 there was Afterwards... my post-Q Evangelion fanfic (discussion)

Has anyone took the time to compare the two subs?

Any context for that sketch?
It looks like artwork from Anima or something.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
It's a drawing Yamashita released on his twitter account a couple years ago when NTV was playing Eva 3.33. According to the thread where it was first posted, the text says soemthing like "On the ship we have nowhere to go so we're always hanging out. Even now we're not special" (or "don't have anything to do")."

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
Do you remember the thread's name? I assume it's on this site.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
Googling the start of the phrase against the site gave "Not actual news thread" and NTV = Nippon TV in this case.

Re:
Really?
I've always gone with thw 'they really hate him' interpretation but even I was expecting this to be clarified in the other direction.
'yarare' is kinda genuinely ambiguous I hear it in fighting animes all the time where it could indicate both lethal and non lethal defeat but the lethal implication was often there.
Maybe it's just the clunky sentence build but that seems even worse than "Just die!" like you'd say it out of simple rage in battle; because of the increased 'lia down and take it' element.
In any case there is no contradition between this and not immediately stabbing his ass when he was no longer an active threat nor likely to put up a fight - of course she could just leave him but what if neo nerv collects him again?

Wow! I always thought that was that scene of Anima Asuka going skating with Shinji but now I see the eyepatch.
This could possibly still have been the 'ship' from the original Q trailer (hence the civilian clothes) at the start but it defs a glimpse of how they became friends.

I'm curious about this too, having only watched the Home Video Version.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
Regarding the debated Asuka line. I've just sent an email to Mr. Dan Kanemitsu asking about this, so hopefully he'll shed some light on such discrepancy.

Re: Translation of Evangelion: 3.0
Sorry for the double post but Mr. Dan Kanemitsu answered my question.
Here's what he had to say about the phrase:
Here's what he had to say about the phrase:
Hello xxx,
I can answer your question pretty quickly.
Below is the original base translation (the first basic translation of the entire script) for the line in question:
0823 Asuka
おとなしくやられろ!ガキシンジィ!!
Just give up and drop dead, Brat Shinji!
やられろ
can have multiple meaning in Japanese.
殺る kill
犯る rape/fuck
やっつける defeat
are the most common meanings in this context.
The Funimation translation was supervised by myself.
The same line was delivered as the following:
Just lie down and take your punishment! Quit fighting!
The sub utilized:
Shut up and let me
kill you, Brat Shinji!
While the meanings are different, I felt that the audience would be able to appreciate that Asuka's "let me kill you" has multiple meanings.
In the course of our lives, there are moments when people employ rash statements in moments of passion.
This was one such circumstance.
I will also note that:
Shut up and let me
kill you, Brat Shinji!
--was also utilized for the international film festival submission version of Eva 3.0, which was a translation that I was responsible as well.
I hope this answers your questions.
Best regards,
Dan Kanemitsu

That's really neat! Thanks for that!
I think we can safely rule one out!

Wow, that is really cool.
That depends on how Shin Eva turns out.
