The shot of Shinji in his blue plugsuit has the artstylr of 2.0. All the other shots of Shinji from the PVs have him in that 3.0 artstyle. Hell, even the TV Spot had that one shot of him looking much more mature so it's interesting that they made him look like that, along with the shot of Unit 01 looking very very similar to 1.0. Seems that "+1.0" title might be more than a bit literally taken in this movie huh.

Maybe but sometimes the thought is worth it to keep the hype steady.

It’s lovely to read into it but I really just think the simple reason it’s called 3.0+1.0 is because simply the 4 is considered bad luck and means death apparently in Japan.

That being said, this movie has indeed had its share of bad luck.

Even though it doesn’t say 4.0 it is the 4th movie lol

I don't think it's necessarily that. Remember it was originally announced as Evangelion: FINAL, they could have kept that name if they merely wanted to avoid the damned 4.

I think Anno is a clever boi and some of the scenes in previews/trailers come from 'inside 4th impact'

In one of Eva Monkey's videos, he talks about why the movie was never called "4.0".
Basically, traditional Japanese art follow a structure in which all of its works have only three acts. So, that's why the film is called "3.0 + 1.0".
There is no fourth act. "3.0 + 1.0" is just the second half of the third movement, know as "3.0".

Yes I know I saw that video that there is no such thing as a 4th act but taking that away it’s still 4 movies and shin eva is number 4. For this purposes 4 exists but they don’t wanna curse it by using the number 4 so 3+1=4 lol

The original scheme of Rebuild was to be 4 'parts' but (if all there info here is correct) it wasn't until early 2012 that it was publicly revealed that there would be a fourth movie, rather than the previous '4 parts in 3 releases' structure.
Anno in the statement released early in 2007 said 'We hope that you look forward to the 4 new retellings of this story.'

I think rather than avoiding 4 because it's unlucky that they're trying to keep something of a 3 part, trilogy like structure to Rebuild, like with Jo-Ha-Kyu).

I've seen in multiple places people say that Rebuild now has a 4 part structure based off of Kishōtenketsu, but I think it's a misunderstanding based off a superficial equation of the massive 'twist' in Q and the meaning of the title 3.0+1.0 with the 3rd and 4th parts of Kishōtenketsu.

I don't know, man. For me, the "fourth act thing" makes sense. I mean, it’s not because there are four films that there are four acts. As stated in the video, "3.0 + 1.0" can be seen as a second part of "3.0".
This makes even more sense when you consider that 3.0 and FINAL should have been released at the same time, in 2008...
Anyway, that's just what I think.

One of the lesser known facts about this film series' titling is that in one of the earliest Rebuild promo posters, back when they were supposed to be two 45 minutes "films" being merged into one, 3.0 and FINAL are listed as 「ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版: 急」+「ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:？」, so "Title" + "Title" is surprisingly not a new thing. Also, since the 急 kanji is eventually changed to Q, it's unknown whether FINAL's Japanese title was always planned to be revealed as シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 or something else entirely.



I like the idea of 3.0 and Shin being essentially one film split into two, a staff mentioned in the EVA-EXTRA audio commentary that why 3.0 is so hard to understand is because it was meant to be seen simultaneously with Shin Eva or something like that. The existence of 3.333 is to make Q closer to Shin Eva visually and then there was the plan of screening Q: 3.333 and Shin Eva back-to-back before the pandemic and eventual delay hit. I don't know if they're making a new edit to combine those films (like how Revival of Evangelion merged Death and The End) or simply screening two DCPs back-to-back, but that sounds awful lot like the original release plan, right?

I'm glad they changed to『シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版𝄇』, it's better this way, to contrast with the "old" (急・旧・Ｑ) EVANGELION.

Yeah, we discussed about that one in another thread before!
It also pretty much starts the unofficial Hideaki Anno's "Shin Trilogy", although Shin Eva is the only one that's not a standalone work.
