That makes me remember a pic of Shinji in a WILLE officer formal uniform, with cap and coat, very classy.

Would anyone happen to have a pic featuring Asuka in nothing but leg warmers?

Picture of Shinji in WWII uniform? Or Rei I guess.

Or anyone in, like, Byzantine garb.

Is this still a weird subcurrent in anime/manga to put Nazi uniforms on various characters just for shits?

Wish there are bigger scans but the text is revealing. Asuka mentioned the Tokaimura nuclear incident and the hostage taking of Japanese embassy in Peru, both happened in 1996, as conspiracy and sabotage attempt by some "evil power". Shinji got the uniform from Kaworu and inspired to join the "Evangelion National Socialist Movement" and form the "Eva Jugend" to promote "pure-blooded Yamato tribe" and combat "the evil power". Wish I could read other text as some like Hikari's are too blurred for me to read...

Even if it's being done ironically it still really bugs me to see popular characters used in that fashion. It's bad enough when it's just something commercial, but when it's something with that kind of history behind it . . . ugh.

To be honest it kinda makes me cringe that there's such a kneejerk reaction to anything Nazi... Rather than fighting their ideas, people seem content to lose their shit at a bunch of uniforms and act like we're so much better for it.

Not very sure what you mean by commercial there, you mean things like Shinji promoting aftershave cream and things like that?

Losing their shit was bad phrasing on my part, but when every time something Nazi gets brought up and there's at least one token guy saying how the Nazis were terrible or whatever, it strikes me as hollow lip service done as nothing more than a self-righteous custom or because it's what you're socially expected to do. The social reaction also comes off to me as proof of how deft propaganda and social manipulation has gotten... For all the rightful disdain Nazi ideology gets i don't think most people would be able to quite say why they were something people needed to fight against outside of generalities or hyperbole, and thus it's just a matter of time before the same mistakes repeat again in another skin...

I'd also like to note the comments aren't directed so much at this instance in particular but just the wider trend i see. Sorry for getting off-topic.

Dream, you're combining a holier-than-thou attitude here with a position that's one step shy of Nazi apologism. Probably best to quit digging.

I fail to see any hint of anything like sympathy for the Nazis in what Dream said, unless saying something that a subtle Nazi apologist might say now automatically implicates one as a subtle Nazi apologist.

Those Nazi uniforms, with the exception of Misato's, look absolutely terrible. And that's just because she's being fetishized viâ the uniform in a way quite counter to the Nazi sensibilities, which doesn't speak well of the artist's Naziism.

Actually that seems to be sort of the thing that Dream was talking about, though at the other side. The Nazis, not considered as an actual civilization, but as a myth. For the mainstream, this is as the Titans or Giants or worse as a joke; whereas neo-Naziism is basically a cargo cult. I saw something on tumblr about that.

Anyway, I meant Japanese WWII uniforms. But really, that's too specific. Any good-looking militaristic uniform would do. The bloody Utena duelists' outfits would do. In fact, those might be even better.

That annoys the fuck out of me too, but I didn't see any of it here.

I think you misread the critical line -- "and thus it's just a matter of time before the same mistakes repeat again in another skin". To put it in other words, I read Dream as saying "I don't think most people would be able to say why the Nazis were bad outside of generalities or hyperbole, and thus the risk rises that something like the Nazis could happen again".

We now return to our regularly scheduled topic. (Further responses on the subject shall be PMs to me or nothing at all.)

Why do those costumes actually suit them very well (or look good on them if you will)? Is it just me? It's also hilarious. I never thought something like that was done in a doujinshi. But is there anything like that for any of the other WW2 countries? I can just picture a cigar chomping, trench gun wielding GI Asuka with a huge, unshaved stubble.

Well, ISIS-chan is already a thing, so..................
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996
