I think you can just consider 「いつまで立っても」as a whole expression (in the sense of, "no matter how much time passes") and try to convey the general meaning without trying to be too literal. (Hope that made sense?)

In this sense, I think "always" should be good enough.

see for example

Haven't time to check if they are indeed relevant by now. Sorry, but I'm in a hurry these days.

EDIT — IMPORTANT:

Many sentences changed.

Someone is needed to correct the English translation. Those changes might have generated many meaning alterations. Also, some incomplete sentences are now complete and can be translated.

Thank you.

It looks like a literal translation of what Misato said, this is the Japanese (with romaji) text just in case:
あなたはもう、何もしないで。
Anata wa mo, nanimoshinaide.

Talking about the translation, some days ago I was discussing with symbv about a part of the translation which left me perplex, the "nothingness and brutal abyss" part, he confirmed the correctness of Reichu's translation (I'm still trying to understand what I'm supposed to think about it, Kaworu didn't seem to give it a negative connotation) but when he provided his translation for the whole sequenece I noticed that we completely lack a part of the Japanese text:
00:46:49 {シンジ} 自分の事なんてどうでもいい気がして、落ち着くっていうか。

The first part seems to be completely absent in the current translation:
00:46:49 {Shinji} It calms me down, if that makes sense.

symbv provided this translation instead:
00:46:18 {カヲル} 暗くなってきたね。
00:46:20 {カヲル} 今日はこれで戻ろう。
It's getting dark. Let's call it a day and get back.
00:46:23 {シンジ} ねぇ、もう少しここに居ない?
00:45:26 {シンジ} ここのまま星を見ようよ。
Hey, could we stay here a bit longer?
Let's watch the stars here.
00:46:28 {カヲル} 星を?
Stars?
(夜)
00:46:31 {カヲル} 星が好きなのかい?
You love stars?
00:46:34 {シンジ} うん。
00:46:36 {シンジ} この宇宙の大きさを感じてると、
00:46:39 {シンジ} 小さい時から、なんだかすごく安らぐっていうか。
00:46:44 {シンジ} 14年くらいじゃ何にも変わらないのが嬉しいっていうか。
00:46:49 {シンジ} 自分の事なんてどうでもいい気がして、落ち着くっていうか。
00:46:55 {シンジ} あ、上手く言えないよ。
Yeah. As soon as I feel the vastness of this universe,
since I was small, somehow it always gets me very much at ease...
or perhaps I am happy that with just 14 years nothing will change..
or perhaps I realize that I myself is nothing and so I feel calm...
Well, I am not explaining very well..
00:46:58 {カヲル} 君の気持ちは伝わるよ。
00:47:01 {カヲル} 変化を求めず、虚無と無慈悲な深淵の世界を好む。
00:47:06 {カヲル} 君らしいよ。
You convey your feeling to me though.
Not seeking changes and loving a world of nothingness and merciless abyss. This is like you.
00:47:09 {カヲル} いいね、二人で横たわるって。
00:47:12 {カヲル} こんなに心地よいとは知らなかったよ。
00:47:15 {カヲル} ありがとう、誘ってくれて。
Very well. We shall lie down together then.
I did not know this could feel so good.
Thank you, for asking me to join you.
00:47:18 {シンジ} いや、そんな別に。
00:47:20 {シンジ} 渚君と星を見たら、楽しいかなって、ちょっと思っただけ・・。
No, you don't have to say that. I was just thinking that it would be great if I could watch the stars with Nagisa-kun...
00:47:27 {カヲル} 楽しいよ。
00:47:30 {カヲル} 僕は君と会うために生まれてきたんだね。
I am happy too.
I must have been born in order to meet you.

I'm also adding this note in order to make it more clear:
symb wrote:he did not explicitly say he is nothing "compared to the vastness of the universe". He was just saying that watching stars got him aware of his own feeling that whatever about him is not worth a damn. The comparison to the vastness of the universe is implicit and it is not the only interpretation of why Shinji said that. He could also have arrived at that awareness by other reasons (which he did not or could not elaborate) and somehow that was triggered by the act of watching the stars. And I want to give it a more straightforward feeling in the translation, so instead of translating it as "or perhaps I become aware that whatever about myself is not worth a damn and so I feel calm" I shortened it to "or perhaps I realize that I myself is nothing and so I feel calm..."

Well, please discuss.
So let’s make a wish.

@ HyperShin-chan:

I think I saw that rendered as "It makes me feel marginalized, but in a good way" somewhere...
I wanted to try harvesting the rice

I wanted to hold Tsubame more

I wanted to stay together forever with the boy I like

Thanks for mentioning it, maybe it was an earlier version of the translated script?
View Original PostSeele00TextOnly wrote:I'm not an expert but I do know that context is paramount in Japanese.

Context matters but the dialogue is pretty straightforward, Shinji asks "what should I do" and Misato answered to that question, apparently they were only going to keep him under their custody, it's reasonable to assume that they were not expecting him to do anything. It would have been nice if she said "you can't pilot but you could cook for us" or something like that but it doesn't look like Wille has great esteem of Shinji, you just have to look at their face when they see Shinji on the bridge; Misato surely still thought about him in a different way but I suppose that she had to keep appearances before her crew on one hand and she also probably feels some anger on the other hand.

I apologize for posting a link in a thread, but this is important.

I can already see the spin-off: Shinji-kun's cooking adventures! It'd be way better than Q, I'm sure of it.

I would say Misato is telling him not to do anything anymore. At all.

Yeah but does the choice of words imply "Do not do anything anymore" as in, "Just don't touch any more fragile stuff, okay kiddie" or more "Do not do anything anymore" as in, "Rot." ?

"You'll never do anything again" and "Don't do anything again" carry significantly different meanings, too -- the former sounds like a direct threat.

It was a change I made while doing one of my clean-up rounds. Just experimenting with a different wording, and apparently it has its problems! I'll try to fix it when I do my next review.

Will play around with the wording of the stargazing scene, too.

View Original PostKendrix wrote:I think I saw that rendered as "It makes me feel marginalized, but in a good way" somewhere...

That was from the first take on the dialogue. I can revert back to some of the original phrasing easily enough. The reason it was modified is because the translation was written in a pretty train-of-thought sort of way that resisted being timed properly, and I did the best I could with it. If I messed up... Well, it's all part of learning.

EDIT: Whoops, I missed this somehow.

00:46:49 {Shinji} It calms me down, if that makes sense.

Chock that up to me messing up when I was trying to proof the original translation and divide it for timing purposes. I'll take another look and restore what I omitted by accident.

judging from the tone of the scene, her expression, and the history of Misato & Shinji on the topic of Shinji being willing/able to take any action whatsoever, I'm inclined to go with the meaner interpretation.
God, Apparently you all have been discussing Q since November. Catching up on the discussion is harrowing.

Honestly, about as "mean" as I was going for was, "You'll never fuck shit up ever again".

We can do that for the OEDUB version.

By the way, Seele00TextOnly and I were talking in IRC about how the shogi match appears to never actually start -- it's just Fuyutsuki and Shinji setting up pieces. As a result

00:55:19 {Fuyutsuki} You'll lose in another thirty-one turns.

seems off.

A more natural English speaking of these lines would be, "In 31 turns, you'll lose." Even if they haven't started playing, we can get the idea that he knows the game so well that he is predicting the turn counts.

I feel like not having a knowledge of grorious bushido chess makes this scene a lot more confusing than it should be - most specifically I have no idea what Fuyutsuki means when he says "is this way more fun for you, then?" or whatever
