I'm not sure what Linked Horizon was attempting to do by switching the pacing and tones of their songs. Guren no Yumiya in particular suffers from this and that initial enthusiasm I had from the TV size hasn't recovered from hearing the full version. Jiyuu no Tsubasa is slightly better but still has the same issues and even has 20 seconds of Guren no Yumiya starting at 4:02.

Yeah, this. I don't know enough about music to properly articulate my objection to Guren no Yumiya, but it sounds like two different songs spliced together with a weird guitar solo and some spoken dialogue mixed in at awkward points. The individual elements are good (great even), but they don't seem to fit together very well.

I rarely see this sort of thing with anime songs. The only example I've seen that was worse was the full version of the The World God Only Knows OP.

I'm not entirely sure if Linked Horizon classifies as symphonic metal (metalheads, don't kill me, please). But that's not uncommon in that genre. Just listen to something by Galneryus or Rhapsody of Fire. They have similar pace shifts.

I'm not sure why they do it, but it isn't all that uncommon.

I figured it's probably set in what would be the 20th century - seeing as humanity has spent the last 100 years hiding from the Titans, it's feasible that since their retreat, their technology hasn't evolved much (except for the 3D Manoueverability Gear).

I believe that the Titans were created as biological weapons, but then they got out of hand.

That being said, I wonder if the Titans ever made it to Australia?
