Thanks to this thread, I watched Colossus: The Forbin Project. It was a great sci-fi movie. I can see why the film crew added that in.

Huh, I thought this would be common knowledge on the forum by now. I was flabbergasted as well when I first saw it. There doesn't seem to be a single thing done randomly in these movies.

Nah, this is the first I'm hearing of it. This thread has been dead for more than two years before I joined, so I'm not surprised that I hadn't heard of it. Of course, now I have, and it feels epic.

Not sure if everyone's noticed this, but the entire quote from Colossus: The Forbin Project can be heard backwards in that scene, not just the last two lines. The first line, "Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride." can be just barely made out in the beginning of the backwards clip. It's slightly covered up by Shinji's voice, but you can hear it with a high enough volume. Can anyone enhance the sound in that clip so that the Dummy Plug's voice is clearer?

Cool stuff, I remember noticing that the thing was making too strange noises to be random, but later I plain forgot about it all. That movie is a staple of 70s scifi, the kind of low profile thing that later got cannibalized by everyone and everything, but few aknowledge so (HAL9000 was a killer AI, but Colossus was the first AI dictator). Too bad about some naive scenes probably forced on the scriptwriters by the producers to get more viewership among voyeurs.

On a side note: in Gendo's view of things, Shinji was really just there to close the circuit and make it work. A cog in the mechanism. But ironically, the dummy plug (and the Colossus) take the blame on themselves and are actually supposed to lift the burden from your shoulders if you think about it. However giving up control is a moral choice as well, Pink Floyd style.
