To be fair, Evangelion 2.0 in particular was not rated by the MPAA. The theater I went to see it in labeled the film as an "R" rated film simply to avoid complaints. The 2.22 cut itself, not changing anything within terms of offensive content, does have a very "PG-13" feel to it, though. The label on the Funimation release says "TV-14," which is widely considered to be the FCC equivalent of the MPAA's "PG-13".

If memory serves well, 1 "Fuckin'" and 1 "Shithead", which is perfectly expected for a film the FCC labeled "TV-14". There really aren't a whole lot of "naughty" words. ("Naughty" begin defined as word that can be construed as sexual or perverse in nature.) There are some references to "Hell" and other forms of damnation, and maybe a few vain "Pisses" here and there, but those are just hateful, not really "naughty".

My beef with the "naughty" words is that it just seems out of place. The delivery wasn't all that hot and it felt more like "We can swear because we're tough and stuff," rather than a genuine reaction to the situation. I blame all of this on the performance simply because it's hard to make such words not sound genuine to the situation when you have an Eva cutting its own arm off. Otherwise, I didn't mind them that much. (But, hey! I don't really like the English dub anyway. What do I care?)

For an actual "swear-fest" watch Pulp Fiction starring Sam Jackson. That film is very good at it as well. To see one that's hysterically bad, watch Snakes on a Plane, also starring Sam Jackson. (I personally think the censored version of the latter film is funnier.)

Those were just the ones I knew from the top of my head. There's really no reason for any of those lines to have that kind of language.

As probably mentioned elsewhere, the original Japanese version does have a few "damns" (maybe a "shit" depending on the translation of the particular word) and I think a "bastard", but it at least makes sense with the context instead of excessive swearing. For instance, Mari is frustrated her attacks aren't connecting during Zeruel/10th Angel, Shinji understandably freaking out when the Dummy System is tearing apart Eva-03/the Entry Plug during 9th Angel/Bardiel.

Point-blank shithead is the only one in the dub where I would say it doesn't make sense in context.

@Frisky: I distinctly remember a "Goddamn" during the first fight, and a "Bastard" somewhere in there.

Also, people really need to learn what the word excessive means. (Technically since Frisky doesn't want any use of the words, it's excessive to him, but that doesn't count)

Edit: Shouldn't this be in a different thread? What does this have to do with the quality of Rebuild? Last time I checked; Eva is a Japanese work, directed by a Japanese director, with a Japanese crew, and a Japanese cast. I don't care if you like the dub, you can't use it to debate the quality of the original work.

Oh, I dunno. War and death always seems to be appropriate reasons for nerves to get so high-strung as take on an entirely new course of language pattern. Talk to anyone who's been through the Hell of war and back, and they'll confirm this.

I mean, really? Who talks like that?

Sure it's some intense language, and should be used cautiously and wisely. (The original Greek found in the New Testament shows that God has no problem inspiring the Apostle Paul to tell a church in sin that they're, in a literal translation, "full of ass-sh!t" and "douche bags" as it uses the most derogatory Greek words for donkey dung and, in some cases, woman's period blood, in describing the church's hypocrisy.) But intense language like that makes sense with the intense battles and the whole life-or-death situation involved therein.

It's funny that you use Saving Private Ryan as an example, since there is a large group of WWII veterans who are very adamant about how Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, etc... horribly inaccurate about the kind of language they used.

"The 'F' word was used by GIs of the WW2 era, but I think the BoB writers overdid it. They portray a degree of profanity typical of Vietnam and today, not WW2. This was (also) the case in 'Saving Private Ryan'"

But regardless, you are correct. In a life or death situation, people tend to use more coarse language.

Or someone who feels that the swearing is out of place. I've only seen excerpts of the dub and some of it feels out of place to me.

I do understand what you guys are saying about it being out of place and whatnot but surely we need to take into account that translating Japanese to English is no easy task along side of that you cannot just do so literally. The words chosen by Shinji in the sub might be different in the dub but as long as it still portrays the same meaning surely it shouldn't matter too much?

Hell no , it's more of the usage of "point blank shithead" and "Just fucking die", which don't have an equivalent in the Japanese version (instead, Mari says "Just die already!" and "Point blank attack!" , translation-depending). She does later on say something along the lines of "Bastard, not bad!" (depending on the translation) after her attacks towards Big Z aren't working/before Beast Mode kicks in. Again, the context is everything especially when you compare it to the original work. Phrases such as "damn" and "shit" were used in the original Japanese (NGE and NME) with battles such as Bardiel (during Dummy System rampage and afterwards, when Shinji's knocked out), as mentioned before.

Okay, I'll give you that. That could be seen as putting extra swear words in to seem 'bad ass' as it where. Yet she's British right? Doesn't that me she can swear as much as she damn well pleases = P Or so Hollywood stereotypes would like us to believe....

Which reminds me if I am correct in thinking that Mari IS English then why doesn't she have a British dubbed voice actor? I mean I understand the name it referencing her English/Japanese heritage. I guess it might just came down to a lack of British voice actors (or American's that can do a decent British accent = P)

Why didn't Anno get a British-Japanese woman to voice her in the first place? Or a German-Japanese woman to voice Asuka? Obviously it wasn't that important; it's more foreign stuff thrown in to be foreign than to have any actual merit. Or if you want to get into crazy theory territory, she's speaking Japanese, that just happens to sound like English in the dub, so the accent probably wouldn't be the same.
