All I want is a happy ending for Shinji. I think all the fanbase in general wants for Shinji is a happy ending. An absolute, Iron Clad, Non-Esoteric, happy ending. God knows the kids earned it.

Here in the states, Dark Horse released a comic book based upon George Lucas original script for Star Wars. . . complete with Lizard monster Han Solo and Old Man Luke Skywalker. Truth be told I wouldn't mind seeing something like that done for Eva. Including the original design for Kaworu.

I imagine Shinji contemplating, or even attempting suicide will play a part in 4.0. But being the main character, and Anno no longer being suicidal or depressed himself, its doubtful he will go through with it.

I imagine he escapes his cell and walks outside, and inches closer to the edge of the Wunder as he gives what he thinks is going to be his last words to Misato, who tries to talk him out of it.

He says how he's sorry and how this is the only way he can atone, how the world would be better off without him, how it's his fault an no-one elses for everyone being dead etc. But right before he does the deed Asuka or Mari knock him out, or another Eva attacks the Wunder thus keeping him from going through with it.

for me one of the worst possible endings would be ending on a question.
not like eoes ending with us questioning what will happen to Asuka and Shinji in the long term future, but a IMMEDIATE question.
like if Shinji is considering suicide or considering ending human existence and it cuts to black without telling us.
THAT would be a nightmare ending for me.
i want a happy ending more than i can possibly describe but i will tolerate a unhappy ending as long as its not left open like that.
i truly truly above all else need a DEFINITIVE END!

Worst case scenario ending is an EOE ending where we will be left confused, we will get no answers and we will end up speculating for years to come.

Xanderkh and El Mariachi you two managed to summarize most of my fears I do not know whether I am grateful or terrified. I think that I will thank. It's just missing the gruesome Wille's last stand: I think it will overcome the horror of the massacre pornographic of the Band of the Hawk during the Eclipse Arc in Berserk and the end of Nerv in EoE. The head of LILITH up looks like a white Behelit!

And the second point that I fear would be discovering that the army of Mass Production Eva 06 existed only to capture Mari, Asuka and Rei Q to Gendo do what it did in EoE and in Manga: undress them and violate their bodies to turn himself into Giant Naked Gendo, but only this time he is successful and there will be this vision of hell.

As the end of Shinji, I'm extremely curious to see what Anno meant by hope. I doubt it's the same thing I mean by hope, but I'm already resigned and I cannot even guess WHAT can be.

@One-eyed: I know the ending of EoE seems bleak, especially with "I Need You", but it's still synonymous with the idea of Hope. Although Shinji at the point discovered a new meaning to live on and bring the world back in time, that still doesn't mean that aspects of the world and life aren't going to be different altogether.

The world still will be hard and sometimes painful, but also warm and loving at the same time, hence Shinji's choke and Asuka's caress.

Just because you've found your reason doesn't mean that the world is going to bend over and let you. You still have to fight what you want for if it means that much to you, and that's what Anno is trying to say in BOTH forms of Evangelion. Hope will give you a reason to go on, but you have to fight for it if you truly believe in your reason, and the world is going to be hard along the way, but at the same time, it can be beautiful. :)

Worst Possible Ending?:

FINAL BATTLE

Asuka sacrifices herself in order to protect Shinji (just like how Piccolo did with Gohan)
Before she dies she tells him that she "Always loved him" and that "She's sorry for treating him like
crap for all these years" as Asuka gently touches Shinji's cheek she said "Don't you dare cry, stupid
Shinji!" as her hand slowly falls to the ground. "Asuka??" "Asuka wake up!!" says Shinji
as he yells in vain, tears running down the sides of his face.

Moments later as the sounds of crying have long since past
Lying over Asuka's lifeless body Shinji screams! A scream fueled by sorrow, rage and loss.

ending music plays

If you want my vision for the Final battle between Wille and Gendo I'm thinking something like 2nd Renaissance in The Animatrix. That was easily one of the most intense, hopeless, and nihilistically dark final battle ever animated.

Anyways, this thread is for catharsis sake, I think the vast majority DO want Shinji to get a happy ending.

Worst Case Scenario: All of the cast of Evangelion (Including the extra-canonical characters) get sucked into the I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream universe. Lord knows what AM would do to them.

I hated that story, it depressed me to no end. But you cannot deny its influence. It inspired everything from Terminator to System Shock to maybe even some aspects of Eva!

The Evangelion version of the Eclipse happens, and Shinji sacrifices everyone important to him for the option of infinite power...

More likely, it'll end up being suicide, because I see no way for any redemption storyline left here, regardless of how responsible he actually is for Third Impact. The world (or rather, all the people in it) is not going to let him live a peaceful life.

And when/if Final subverts all our negative expectations? What then?

Again Shinji attempting suicide will likely play a part in Final, but given his main character status it's doubtful he will go through with it. Anno loves putting us in the pit with our poor cast but he's not a complete monster (anymore.)
