Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

The lesbian fantasy stuff: I get the why behind it; sex sells no matter the situation, but that doesn't make it any less eye rolling or frustrating when you just want respect and to be taken seriously. Why should the gender of my partner be an issue to anyone, you know? And Heaven forbid, in my case he's male so I must be "straight passing". *Headdesks into eternity* I get that can be an issue in certain situations, but again, there's that level of frustation of just wanting acceptance so people can move on with their lives. Sexuality is ultimately a nonissue since it's mainly between you and your partner[s]--So why can't society at large just chill out? I like to think viewpoints are more progressive these days; though of course where you live makes all the difference too.

Extreme viewpoints like fundies: Either extreme doesn't budge on their opinion, so it's best to just maintain respectfully agreeing to disagree and just moving the hell on. Of course, in some situations, some people are just stubborn and forget about respect. :sigh:

But that is something that's always bugged me too. The assumption you can't reconcile spirituality (or religion) and sexuality. I guess it's again the extremist mindset coming into play when in reality; reconciling different aspects of yourself should boil down to you (and/or your higher power[s])--Not what other people think about you or the issue (say, religion itself) overall.

Sexuality is like an ice cream shop. I respect your right to stick to one flavor, but where's the fun in that? -o-;

Houston proper is thankfully liberal--the lesbian mayor Annise Parker just finished up her terms, I think. Naturally, the Bay Area (I attended college there) is pretty easy to be accepted. I guess it was mainly in Upstate NY where I grew up that acceptance could be hit or miss--especially the Bi thing.

We'll definitely get there, and I'm happy that laws are finally moving in a positive direction in the States.

I empathize with your irritation, SSD: it seems that a lot of the assumption with females who have queer relations is that it's a phase they'll grow out of, or that it's either for attention (from guys), or, as you say (if you're bi) straight passing. It's kind of disheartening to see how many homosexuals dismiss bisexuality as a thing, which is...outright wrong. Sexuality is a spectrum: you might be more straight, you might be more gay, you might be somewhere in the middle...who knows?

It's whoever comes along and rocks your socks.

The fundamentalist teachings of many religions, however, can be observed to think that sex in general is this bad thing. They reserve a lot of ire for homosexuality, but even sex outside of marriage can be treated rather harshly (though I notice that a lot more of the harshness comes down on girls and women than it does boys and men...who'd a thunk?)

And the Bible Belt is slowly eroding its staunchness in some places, but that's why you have the kinds of backlashes that Abbot and his ilk represent: this desire to push 'states' rights' again, which is for the same reasons the South pushed them the first time: keeping a hold on regressive ideas like, you know...slavery.

The world is changing, and these people don't want it to. But it will.

It always does.

This in particular is a massive problem in Japan, hell for just a small idea take a check, hey many lesbians in anime have you really ever seen outside of a school setting, the answer will probably be very few.

That might be closely tied to the fact that most Anime revolves around High School Life. So a niche topic (which it is in a conservative society), in an expensive to produce format highly depended on sales won't come around that often.

There is actually this weird kind of concept in Japan about schoolgirl romances: how it's the thing they do to figure out how romance actually works in life. Intimate friendships are encouraged at that age, but with the understanding that they'll stop at a certain age.

Which then gets into the issue of Japan being...kind of dickish to its homosexual population.

...interestingly, it's sort of the same way for boys, too. Boys in Japan who are friends tend to get VERY handsy with each other, but are adamant that it's not a gay thing. Which...it's not, but it's interesting how kids develop there.

Ok let me use a different test, go and check how many "yuri" anime or manga end with the girls being married to or going out with guys instead of each other, its a disturbingly high amount, hell its the reason i switched to dynasty scans as my main reader, to avoid that stuff.

Ironically around the time when I first made my account on here was when I made my first steps coming out of the closet. I was active duty military then and DADT was still active so I was still functionally closeted at work. Following a stress-induced recloseting, I'm now fully out and engaged. :D

I also ship Shinji-Kaworu hard.

The true purpose of Rebuild is to change the balance of probability of the ships, while confusing things further by adding a couple more possibilities.

I think the real purpose was to throw ships out the window, and get us to focus on the fucked up kid at the center of the story. "No kids, it's not about all the moe girls and that hot bishie guy, it's about a kid who hates himself and needs to learn to deal with it. Focus, focus!"

No the true purpose was to have at least one person named Rei who doesn't get the short end of the stick when its all over..........so far its failing at that.

Personally, I don't get the concept of explicitly coming out. Why can't people just be the sexuality they want to be without having to advertise it in big neon letters, so to speak?
I am at ease with being primarily attracted to people's personality, their gender (etc.) be damned. So there's pretty guys and pretty girls that I can look at (with certain limitations regarding physical attributes; chunky guys and girls are not my favourite but romance-only is also an option ^_^ ). But I don't feel the need to advertise "I am bi" everywhere I come.

On the other hand, I kinda get the point made about bi people getting ignored. A few days ago I had a dinner where the subject of transsexuality came up, and I was all "why are people so concerned about differences between males and females, why should it matter? It's really kinda bullshit if you think about it..." and got a bunch of blank stares and got ignored. :|

PS. I keep reading this thread's topic as "GLBBQ Otaku Represent!!"

If we ever achieve this mindset in the majority of population, it'll be all good.
