Evangelion is doing so damn well that even Deadline covered it. That's very rare for an anime film!

I'm betting Shin Evangelion would make even more money than Mugen Train since Evangelion is a mainstay in Japanese pop culture and the film is rated G compared to Demon Slayer's PG12 rating.

Eva surpassing Spirited Away would certainly be an incredible feat.... ^_^

Having not watched Mugen Train... is there anything in it that justifies a higher age rating than the Rebuilds? The fact that every one of the Rebuilds has been rated G (for Japan) is one of the more baffling things about this franchise, because in America it would be an easy PG-13.

Shin Eva has surpassed 1.72 billion yen within four weekdays and it's ready to topple Gintama: THE FINAL today which has been on theaters more than a month, let's see how the film performs on its first weekend! I'm guessing many repeat viewers will come on Saturday and Sunday since they can't do that on working days. ^_^

I love how the tweet illustrated this with a pic of Mari looking all excited.

Mari: "Look, Your Highness, we broke the movie record!"

Asuka: "More records to go! Ours will be the bestmovie EVER!"
Shinji: "...I'm so relieved that ppl actually like it..."
Kaworu: "You should have more confidence, Shinji-kun. ^-^ With an awesome MC like you ppl are just going to eat it up."
ReiQ: "...If I were Ayanami Rei, would I say something profound about human nature now...?"

While I don't think Thrice Upon A Time could get anywhere close to what Demon Slayer did - 15 consecutive weeks at the top of the box office! - I really think this is going to do a lot better than even Toho had hoped for. We'll know in about two weeks time to see how it keeps playing but from the sounds of it I don't feel this film is going to have huge weekly drop offs.

That Anno. He really saved the best for last.

Even 3.0 with how divisive it was, it still managed to beat 2.0. So I think it's safe to assume 3.0+1.0 will beat 3.0..

But yea, it won't come close to Demon Slayer's record..

KnY is kind of an anomaly anyway in terms of popularity and success, I'd say it's close to how big Eva was back during its peak era in late 90s (NGE-EoE).

I'm still reading reports about sold-out Shin Eva morning shows while afternoon shows aren't as crowded because most people are at work, unfortunately some areas like Tokyo are still in lockdown phase so evening-midnight shows aren't allowed as theaters have to close at 8pm, so I won't be surprised if there's a big jump on BO numbers on the weekend.

Two billion yen in five days! :penpen_bravo:

290 million for today so the drop is smaller than the first three days (50 million less per day which is normal, yesterday was 300). I heard Toho cinema chains have discount on weekends so people are expecting that will be the big draw for both new and repeat audiences.

530m yen on Sunday, 3.15b yen total (estimations). Shin continues to do very well.

Off topic, but damn, Demon Slayer flexing hard with 40m yen in the same day (150th day of showing).

Wow.

Thrice Upon A Time has almost doubled You Are (Not) Alone's ENTIRE theatrical box office run in about a week.

Short of a crazy drop - seems very unlikely - It should pass You Can (Not) Advance entire run in a few days and is already at almost 1/2 of what You Can (Not) Redo did in total.

I wonder if the film is going to surpass Shin Godzilla?

The Japanese press/analysists were expecting it to gross 6 billion yen. Shin Godzilla ended up at 8.25 billion yen total.

A while ago I found this numbers for the previous movies

View Original PostJoseki wrote:Inflation adjusted (at November 2012) 3.0 roughly did in a weekend what EoE did in its lifetime at the box office, 1.13 billions v 1.38 billions, and it ended its run at 5.5 billions. 2.0 ended at 3.6 billions and 1.0 at 1.7 billions.

They are very successful and following the trend 3.0+1.0 could very well be even better.

Predicting week 2 drops based on historical data in this case is a bit difficult considering the movie debuted on a Monday. I would expect it to be bigger than the week 2 drop of 3.0 but maybe COVID is pushing more people towards later showings.

EDIT: since it was missing this is Saturday

Demon Slayer itself is a box office anomaly (it managed to topple Spirited Away, two decades-long crowning champion) so comparing Shin to that film would only make itself sound less succesful I think. -o-; It's performing much better than any other theatrical anime releases since last year, for example it managed to gain roughly the same numbers as Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur got in its theater lifetime in just a week, with limited showtimes at that.

And yeah, they were right, the weekend numbers are huge and I think the making-of documentary that will air on the 22nd will give the film another push on its second week. Maybe not as big as the first one, but it'll have fine legs.
