Sup, robersora!
It´s nice to know that there´s a fellow EGF member living here in Vienna too!
(Even though I kinda hope that I don´t already know you IRL, don´t take this personally)
Willkomen zum EGF!
Wir sind hier zwar alle ein bisschen durchgedreht und so, sind aber doch sehr nett(glaube ich zumindestens).

Yeah, Graz is the second largest city in Austria, right? Heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger came from a village near the city.... (it is also the birthplace of conductor Karl Boehm)
I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,
But I discovered Re-Take (or it found me?) and
now here I am.

@symbv: that's right! I'm very astonished, that you know that stuff... I couldn't tell you the second largest city of... arizona or... malaysia...
nice little story: the football stadium used to be named after arnold schwarzenegger, but when he refrained from reprieving someones death sentence while he was governator (ha ha), the stadium was renamed.
yes, that's how unpopular death sentences are in austria (and europe).
i'm sorry, if i bored you.

No, not at all. So even Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (Freedom Party of Austria) is against death penalty? Guess Schwarzenegger will not come back to Austria and run for president then...

@symbv: no, not even them. but i don't consider them as a real political party anyways. they're just so dumb, you know? worse than Repuplicans xD
where are you acutally from to know this stuff?

Well, they command around 25% of opinion poll so they have to be recognized as a real political force and dealt with as such despite how much of an outrageous joke they may look.....
I am interested in international politics so I pay attention to politics and election of all the countries in the world including the recent parliamentary election in Finland (and earlier Ireland) and even the Lander elections in Germany which could have implication to the national politics (the recent one in Baden-Württemberg Land of Germany was a shocker as the Greens overtook SDP as the 2nd largest party and will be the senior party in the Greens/SDP governing coaliation).

hm, intresting. so i can ask you, as you know that stuff... can this "right-shift" really be observed in more countries?
here in austria we have one big problem. approximately a half of the people go off from school after the 9th grade (14 years) to start a "lehre" as it's called. they do not really have further education, and are together with many other people who have no education what so ever, which makes them pretty dumb in the course of time. so many people are affected to parties who don't have real solutions.
another problem is, that the other parties denied problems for too long.
what a shame.

The rise of the right populist political force has been observed as recently as the Finland election last month (several Finns in this forum expressed their anger here) And National Front has been a formidable force in France for over a decade already. Right populist or nationalist parties got into government (or supported minority government) in Holland, Denmark, Italy, Hungary, and Sweden. And Switzerland saw the right populist/nationalist party winning almost 30% of votes in the last federal election. In Austria the rise of the Freedom Party was dated from late 80s and it was considered alarming then but the scene has changed so much now that so many countries are seeing similar. Worrying indeed.

Seems to be similar story that I heard from Finland, particularly the "other parties denied issues cared by voters for too long".

My source said otherwise. It seems to be high. Wiki said the turnout rate in the last Austria Nationalrat election in 2008 was 78.82% American civic advocates would love to have this kind of turnout in their country.
Perhaps you meant the turnout rate in Vienna is only 50%? If that's the case, this could explain why populist party like FPO is so powerful because they got quite a lot of votes from the countryside particularly their base in Carinthia and perhaps there are not enough urban votes to counterbalance that.
