Really nothing to do with Misato, Shinji as a whole has been more assertive and less of a vegetable in the manga version.

But he was in here just as whiney as in EoE so I - no matter how irrationally - want to cheer for Misato here. :P

That said Sadamoto's manga has become more and more trainwreck further it has progressed. lol

It has nothing to do with being whiney, in the anime Shinji was a completely useless. He basically just curled up into a fetal position to die, at least he seems to be somewhat coherent and knowing whats going on here.

I'm sure people would be burning down bridges if Shinji was suddenly being completely assertive, kicking ass, and manly.
