Found this little gem on youtube the other day

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HALL5-PZu4

Probably the best representation of what the movie was going to be like for the fans back then. Are there anymore like these, because I'm genuinely interested in how they marketed this movie.

one of the best teasers of all time. Short, to the point, and it gets across the feeling and tone of the film brilliantly.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

There are two version of that. The other ends with the sound of ocean waves lapping up against the shore in stead of giggles.

I am also envious of these TV spots in every conceivable way. I’d love to construct a TV spot like this for one of my darker film projects. (I just might too.)

My favourite is the live-action one with '夢のスキマ' [Yume no Sukima] playing.
Sends shivers down my spine every time.

That was a TV spot??? Well, I'll be. It's at the beginning of the Manga DVDs. And yes, it's amazing.

Between that TV spot and the trailer Blue Monday mentioned, I'm fully convinced EoE was the most brilliantly marketed film ever.

Well, I love the Trailer, but the TV-spot strikes me as unintentionally funny.

That was fairly indicative of the movie's contents.

Also, lol, that random little Rei in the life action one.

I think that Rei was either the ticket example (e.g. one of the 2.0 trailers had that) but there's a note next to her "this movie will be animated".

The really scary thing is that this is more than just a rapid-fire slideshow of creepy moments backed up with mind rending screaming. I have a theory that this is actually a shot of Shinji's mind during Instrumentality. He was exposed to the combined mind of all humanity (which would explain the other viewpoints- they're other people's memories he's being forced to relive) and the screaming is of course his own as his mind is shredded into a thousand agonized shards that can never be repaired.

We didn't just see a teaser. We saw the complete obliteration of a human being, leaving only a wretched husk of a thing that knows only pain, having seen beyond the end, wrought by his own hands.

The thing is that Manga's release used the same master (albeit filtered-to-death) as the original R2J DVD. While the R2J disc also had the trailer and the movie itself on the same video file, they were separated by chapter stops accessible from the disc's main menu. Unfortunately Manga didn't take the hint and just dumped the master onto disc without any consideration separating the movie and trailer.

As for the creepy-as-hell 15sec TV spot from the original post, it can be also found on the bonus disc for the Renewal DVD box set from Japan.

This should be put somewhere in the wiki for posterity. It's just so...spot-on.

Its not the screaming. It's not the rapid images.

It's the laughing at the end. Brrr...

This might seem a little weird and out of nowhere, but what's honestly the most creepy thing about the spot for me was when you see that shot of Misato at the door, the shot from her and Shinji's final scene together.

It's weird cause, in the scene, her pushing Shinji into the elevator, with the door closing between them, was supposed to represent their separation and ultimately her death, but in the tv spot, it's in reverse, with that same door instead opening to reveal Misato, so it's like she's... coming back from the dead.

it's a little weird but fucking creepy as hell to me jesus christ

I feel like this was a fair warning to everyone how this was going to end. No one should have thought any different lol
