Doll in the palm of the Eva from the spacecraft's window. Kaworu is sitting.

Gendou: Huh...?

Fuyutsuki: A person? No way...

Gendou: Did you hear the Fuyutsuki's conversation?

Kaworu: Nice to meet you, father.

Whhaaatt? Please correct my Japanese if you think it's wrong.

This confused me.

Kaworu is calling Gendo father, now that's odd. Maybe due to the happenings around SI and the awaking of the Angels cause of what Gendo did at Antarctica?

Or he got busy with Adam, I would not put it passed Gendo.

Gendo is the donor from the experiment on Adam in Antactica.

Gendo was raising Kaworu in order to teach him about Shinji and prepare him for his meeting with Shinji and when he would be needed to stop Shinji from initiating 3rd impact.

But I don't believe the way he called him father was in any sort of physical sense, but more in the spiritual sense like mentioned above.

I'd say he's got Adam in his hand (this is Rebuild not NGE so the Angel could go through a sex change, not like they have actual sexes mind you, it's all a fan thing. The whole Mother & Father issue is all metaphysical or something) and Kaworu just senses it. Sometimes I feel we as the fans over analyze everything to such a degree in these films we make everything simple complex.

Kaworu calling Gendo "father" is a reference to the fact Gendo's Shinji's father. Japanese speakers refer to people this way a lot, it's nothing unusual in that sense.

Though for all we know, this could still be a reference to either Gendo having Adam, or even creating Kaworu similar to Rei (not necessarily being the donor for Kaworu).

But honestly, if Gendo created Kaworu or was even the donor, why would Kaworu say "nice to meet you"?

Exactly, it's rebuild, not Evangelion. Why would Gendo have Adam in his hand? We didn't hear anything about Adam yet.

Father? Why father? on Evangelion 1.0 Kaworu said another confused phrase (Well, in the portuguese translation was confused), and make the film seem to be a continuation of the anime.
Well, to know and Kaworu mean with "father" we must wait for the filme came out on western cinema.

Oh, he knows. The Proposal calls Adam a "he". Either Anno decided to engage in a rather rare subversion after that (don't get females named Adam too often), or moms can be male in Japanese (can dads be female, too?).
