You may not know this since you're a new user but that actually was one of the two original scenarios for EoE's ending. Grimdark, disturbing shit, even by EoE standards.

Oh, I even stopped caring, Sadamoto started confusing and disappointing me since volume 9.

Manga has been so-so at best for a long while (nearlyimmeaditly after the very first volumes with wich Sadamoto did good job IMO), it's just that it looked like:


For the longest while: Sadamoto's Reifaggotry and Rei-Shinji shipping is the rule, Asuka marginalized

Later stages: Asuka gains central prominence and becomes the most likely pair candidate for Shinji, Rei as romantic interest withers away very quickly

Now: YEAH LOL NO, there probably isn't anything even remotely romantic between Shinji and Asuka after all.


Both Rei and Asuka are pretty much "out" at this point sans weird, stupid Sadamoto bullshit I'm sure he has in sleeve but which I can't predict.

Well, the manga is weak either way so I don't really care apart from "I wonder how Sadamoto is going to screw up things next" factor... though even then I fear he climaxed with Gendo's hand AT Field...

lol I think Asuka seeing Kaji as her transition guide is perfect. As for folks gloating about how that has anything to do with any shipping, I fail to see it. It's perfectly in character, her seeing him well and alive would be very reassuring to her. Besides there's no disputing the legitimate and strong crush she has on him. Folks are being silly.

And in any case, who's surprised?
He significantly lowered the violence of Asuka's end (if any) and allowed Shinji to redeem his character by growing a pair...
I think only volumes 8-11 went overboard with violence (and kitten-slaying)...
For any matter, I like this direction...

I've been loving the manga so far, at all the turns and differences, and as soon as I saw this Asuka and Kaji page all I could think was 'beautiful and pitch perfect'. If anything this sort of touching moment really reassures me on the quality of how the rest of the ending will play out, however it goes.

Well, I was just fine with the Reifaggotry, Sadamoto managed to further elaborate and humanise her character in a fairly good way, it was just some scenes inserted here and there but it was really nice. It's when things started falling apart that I started wondering "WTF Sadamoto?", I really believe that he lied when he said that he always re-read the whole manga before starting working on it after a long hiatus.

I think TextOnly's point was pretty spot on. I doesn't really eliminate or change anything between Shinji and Asuka. It makes a whole lot of sense for Kaji to be Asuka's transition guide, which was something that wasn't shown in EOE. We don't see if she even gets the standard Rei apparition like all the other recently deceased/killed.

Who does Sadamoto relate to more, Shinji or Kaji?
Kaji = Embodiment of Sadamoto.
He's keeping her to himself. Smart man, smart man.

But to be honest, this is probably just a side-step thing, with the manga ending on the beach as well. And the Rei people are weird cause that's a clone of his mother. So that alternative doesn't make sense either.

The full katakana mode slowed my reading comprehension down to a crawl. (IT'S LIKE READING FULL CAPS, BUT SO MUCH WORSE.) Mixed kanji and hiragana flows so much better.

That probably happens when you actually studied Japanese, it's a different matter when you just happened to learn katakana because of games and you know what they're saying because you heard those phrases countless times in subbed anime.

What is it with katakana? I'm fine with hiragana and learning kanji at a slow pace but every time katakana pops up, I have to get the good damn cheat sheet out.

I blame it on the fact I never did the 'sheets' for them... You know. The ones where you do the character over and over til you fill the page out? Yeah. Those ones.

Weird that Sadamoto put school uniforms on the Rei that swarm Aoba... but made them more explicitly a bunch of loli groupies eager to get him out of his clothes. (And did they!)
