I actually loved The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru the first (and only) time I saw it. I was just amazed at how funny it was, and I knew that what followed would not disappoint. Turned out to be my favorite episode. ^_^

Kyoko's Melons: Currently being completely rewritten, so... if anyone liked it so far, great. I did too. But... not enough. ;)

It's surprising what a difference a decade can make when revisiting older shows.

Continuing with the Haruhi experiment, I found that I had to skip a chunk of episode 3 (had this been a 2016 series, being watched for the first time, it would have landed with an audible "splat!" when I dropped it about 1/3 the way in), and that episode 4 (The Boredom...) was pretty boring due to having already seen what was being alluded to in the callbacks to the as yet unseen but internally-chronologically earlier events, and the rest of it failing as comedy. Eight years being a long time on the internet, the most amusing thing so far has been the contrast between Kyon's struggle with the club web-site and the frictionless upgrades of the Brave Clab's.

By contrast, this time around with Lucky Star, what I found bland and somewhat tedious (or even grating in the case of Lucky Channel) in 2007 is just being pleasant fluff. I had forgotten to quite what extent "all they do is talk about food" characterised the first episode, but at three episodes in, it remains the most successful pure CGDCT series for me (usually getting to the first mid-episode commercial break is a struggle). "I buy sausage" is still a musical car crash, though.

Which order are you watching Haruhi? TV, DVD, or chronological?
"Being human, having your health; that's what's important." (from: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi )
"As long as we're all living, and as long as we're all having fun, that should do it, right?" (from: The Eccentric Family )

I was never all that fond of either Haruhi Suzumiya or Lucky Star. The problem I have with these shows isn't that they're boring, but how poorly they've aged. They're both shows that came from studios trying to make what they think anime fans want to see, based on the stereotypes of the time. It doesn't matter what demographic you're aiming at when you do this, it never ends well. The only thing that changes is the cliches that you use. So instead of a hot-blooded shonen hero who wants to be The Very Best, we've got a bunch of high school students who sit around talking about the most random things.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

^Don’t know about that, might be more a case of the John Carter effect- their influences have been so strong and everything else has copied them to such an extent that over the years the originals don’t seem so special anymore. <shrug>

Started Princess Tutu. Given that this is a toon following the adventures of a transforming, Ballerina Duck recommended by Mr.Tines, I should probably be ashamed of myself for not guessing this was a magical-girl show.
Watched a handful of episodes in dub, but everybody except Luci Christian’s voice sounds too quiet to me, this is especially true of Jay Hickman’s hilarious monotone performance as Mytho/Myuto.
The OP makes me feel depressed, like it’s preparing me for some kind of tragedy…
That teacher Cat is an odd one, but he makes me laugh.

Saw ep.10 of Recovery of an MMO Junkie/ Recommendation of the Wonderful Virtual Life (What is up with that name change? I’m getting Cat Planet Cuties flashbacks); which would appear to be the final episode.
I suppose one could consider it a modern take on the whole star-crossed lovers shtick; two players of an MMO hit it off and end up meeting IRL despite all unlikelihood.
It could have explored gender roles/perceptions/politics a bit, it could have explored Mori’s mindset better, given us a little more on what caused her to quit her job and why she lacks self-confidence way she does; but no, the show didn't feel like getting into anything interesting like that.
It was an okay, vanilla romance and not much else.

YuYuYu S2 episode 3 -- in which Yuuna actually remembers the Hero Club tenets, and then proceeds to ruin everyone's Christmas. I should have suspected that
SPOILER: Show
Truck-kun was actually a Vertex
all along.

Interesting in that this was really the first time in any of the YuYuYu part of the franchise that we've actually been privy to any of the title character's introspection.

@pwhodges
Broadcast order, the exact same [a.f.k.] subs as I watched in 2006; it's just that I do remember the highlights after all these years, and that spoils the mysteries.

@chazthesilencer
But this one is a magical girl show for little girls.

If you want more something a bit more silly and light hearted I totally recommend Mahou Tsukai Tai!/Magic User's Club after Princess Tutu more of a gag anime with most of the same team. Well, I started watching Transformers: Super-God Masterforce and it sure is a show. This is the first Transformers anime with no connection whatsoever to the cartoon or existing characters and it seems like they didn't know what to do with it. The Transformers are people called "Pretenders" who at step one put on a Saint Seiya style armor and fight for a little and then at Step 2 jump into the middle of a Transformer to become the big robots. Kind of like the way GaoGaiGar combines smaller robots into bigger robots. Unfortunately, the art style has really changed into something more like an old Tatsunoko show and while I don't have a problem with Gatchaman or anything the robots just look like people in suits a lot. Also, part of what has made me love Transformers so much are the robots are characters! You can't just stick Optimus/Convoy in front of me and call him Ginrai because there's a person in him! The Transformers after this is called Victory though and seems to be a beloved favorite in Japan so just going to try to get to the end here.

It's been quite some time, since I've seen Haruhi, but I feel like you're both right at that front. I enjoyed it enough when I first watched it, but it might be one of those shows which are so deeply rooted in the time were produced, they don't quite work as anything else but time capsules.

Hmm... I only saw it myself ~6 months ago... but, then again, I hadn't watched too many newer anime (that is, post-2000's), so I didn't subconsciously compare it to its imitators.

Now that I think about it, I hadn't seen shows like Madoka when I first watched Eva (not long before that)... this explains a lot, actually. A few of the people I've recommended Eva to didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought they would. I guess they were a bit jaded, having seen things like Madoka, and other very dark shows? Well, I'm glad it turned out the way it did for me.

The thing is, other shows were actually doing the "high school sitcom anime" thing earlier--and, in my opinion, better. Probably the first of them, the one that started the whole thing, was Azumanga Daioh! in 2002. That show has held up extremely well today, because was able to be its own thing without relying on constant references to other anime. The comedy in it is actually funny, and derives from the characters acting more or less like, well, like people. Even the surreal aspects, like Chiyo's father who may or may not be a floating orange cat, are done in surprisingly subtle manner.

You can tell that this is what all the other high school anime were trying to do--it's just that they never did a very good job. What this results in is shows with a highly "in-your-face" style, characters talking in ridiculous slang that nobody ever used, plots that are absurd for the sake of it, and characters who are blatant otaku stand-ins. I suppose it might have been enjoyable when those shows first came out, but looking back on it it's very grating.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.
