Controversial Anime Opinions

My controversial anime opinions:

AoT is overrated, bland, and uninteresting.
SAO is a complete trash.
The rebuilds are bad movies.
Most horror animes are completely bland and downright terrible.
Gunbuster & Diebuster are extremely overrated and are downright bad.
Mecha animes besides Eva, Gundam, and Zegapain are pretty terrible.
Elfen Lied and Miria Nikki are utter garbage.
Fanservice is okay.
Sailor Moon sucks.
Magical Girl animes are usually complete garbage.
DBZ still holds up as a decently good show.

I thought Cowboy Bebop was kind of boring and uninteresting. I never bothered to finish it.

Mushroom Samba was however pretty good.

Also, Fanboy Bebop is great.

I legitimately rate School Days as a 9/10 and have re-watched it twice since I first saw it.

Such topic always depends on the circle of people you converse with. SnK's anime is mostly popular with casuals; however, anyone I talked with agreed that it's not as great as its popularity may suggest.

My tastes are pretty mellow and follow the general consensus so I don't often jump out of the line so to speak. I suppose, when it comes to Evageeks, I'm a vocal minority that thinks Q is terrible.

School Days is the best for hate-watching. I'm convinced that they take poor character development to a point where it stops being just amateurish and starts to be a complex expression of human misanthropy.

My controversial opinions (at least in "legit" anime fan circles):

*Akira has some great animation, and it did introduce a lot of Westerners to anime, but the plot isn't that interesting. I'd be fine with never watching it again.

*A lot of the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli stuff is pretty banal. I'll always back Mononoke, Nausicaa, and Grave of the Fireflies, but there are a lot of movies where the plot kind of goes nowhere. I feel like part of the reason why Ghibli is so loved is because people can point to it and go, "now THAT is serious anime." At the end of the day, half of these movies are about pigtailed middle school girls who get over their missing dad by learning how to build model airplanes or some shit like that.

*I just can't get into Revolutionary Girl Utena. I don't think I've ever watched something that was so lazily animated, so repetitive in its motifs, so lazy in its character designs and so tiresome to get through. I don't care how aestheticized it is, how the symbolism overlaps, or how many notes it takes from ballet and kabuki theater, Utena is just painful to watch.

*The Monogatari Series is "saving anime" right now.
"The will to lose one's will?"
"Absolutely. The will to make oneself completely free. Will is the wrong word, because in the end you could call it despair. Because it really comes out of an absolute feeling of it's impossible to do these things, so I might as well just do anything. And out of this anything, one sees what happens."--Francis Bacon

OK, here goes:

* Gurren Lagann and Dantalian no Shoka are the only titles out of post-Anno Gainax that even rate as at least halfway decent

* Mononoke Hime is vastly overrated compared with other classic (last century) Ghibli films

* Puella Magi Madoka Magica has nothing to offer but the plot twists, and was otherwise sterile and un-engaging, to the point of being unfinishably bad.

* Other well thought of titles that I dropped like a brick include Texhnolyze, 5 cm/s, FLCL, Baccano!, Spice and Wolf, and Steins;Gate.

Girls Und Panzers doesn't do armored warfare right. In the first 30 seconds it committed the same sin it took Valkyria Chronicles nearly an episode to make.

Out of this and a few real-world examples, there's a rule of thumb that I've come to. Japan + tanks = fail. They were made for bipedal robots, and should stick to what they know.

Additionally, any show that anthropomorphizes weapons directly ( ergo, not Eva's simple naming trope) into little girls is worthy of nothing but contempt.

I like guns. I have no desire to stick my dick in one.
I like the P-51D, and have seen them multiple times. My dick has not.
I liked visiting the (2nd) USS Yorktown. While it was technically inside of the ship, I refrained from rubbing my dick anywhere on it. This is because I'am sane, and know where that ship has been. With Tom Cruise.

Upotte, Arpeggio and the upcoming KanColle, I'll grant you, but we've not had a series yet that turns planes into little girls -- only one that turned the pilots into little girls.

Meh, you got me there.

To yours, what about Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, or Mahoromatic?

Never seen the latter, just prolific use of it in AMVs.

Ah yes, the famous 30 tons tanks with the speed and maneuverability of a car rally! :irked:
If it was just that, but they also decided to put a shitty love triangle between Welkin, Alicia and Faldio (when in the games as a subversion Faldio decided to not flirt with Alicia since he saw that she and his best friends had feelings for each other) which eaten the whole, fucking, plot!
That and they decided to make the composition of Squad 7 follow the popularity polls, leading to shitty members like that insupportable tsundere idol wannabe and her masochist shotacon sidekick, their hijinks taking the few moments the love triangle spares, instead of taking characters that aren't walking anime stereotypes and some interesting background and flaws that would make a far greater material for an interesting story, such as Cezary the racist sniper or Catherine, that other sniper (fun fact: the snipers tends to have the most colorful personalities) that have PTSD from the previous war, or even Jane, the shocktrooper that had gone insane after her shop was destroyed by the war and is now completely crazy, if treated darkly (ie her being a liability instead of Crazy Awesome) it could be interesting.

So yeah, you probably guessed, I hate the Valkyria Chronicles anime, such a fucking waste. The manga on the other hand is excellent, many scenes centers on the rest of the squad and their interactions, even using often overlooked details on the characters' backstory and relationships to make certain scenes and add flavor (such as the fact some of the recruitable soldiers are Welkin's old classmates in the university, and you see them discussing how all the students in chemistry were drafted in a secret project, foreshadowing the attack with chemical weapon later in the story), and more importantly don't shy to show that war is hell: character bleeds, Alicia has a near nervous breakdown after her first killing (the fact it was at point-blank with a high caliber rifle that splattered his brain in the whole room didn't helped), the hero is more and more worn out by all the horrors they faces, Selvaria (one of the main antagonists) is even more badass than in the games and her relationship with Alicia more explored, and even the racist sniper have some character development!
A shame that it's just four volumes.

Although I don't agree to that, my Eva opinion might be just as rare:
I think EoE ist highly overrated.

Not controversial as far as I'm concerned, AoT is over hyped garbage, and I have nothing good to say about Shit Art Online.

My controversial opinion: I refuse to watch the new Gundam (whatever it's called) because I don't like the way the characters look (2silly4me) and the new Gundam BARELY resembles a Gundam. I don't care if Tomino himself is working on it, no one said The Prequels were good just because Lucas worked on them.

Don't like Guren Laggon (don't even remember how to spell it), Like Guilty Crown and Diebiuster, I think Elfin Lied is great, and I like SAO, although not as much as I used to.

I also like Gundam ZZ better than Z. Zeta has a good story and great mech fights, but all the characters are so F@#KING annoying! Gundam Seed is the best overall.... I'm going to watch Destiny in January, if I like that one I'll add it to the list.

Oh my god. I'm in love with this thread.

I guess, you'll like Space Dandy, then. :)

A big YES from me. A prime example for style over substance, which is so overrated, because it was somehow different at the time.

*I am an avid hater of the Macross franchise. The stories aren't interesting, the music is mostly awful (except for that one OVA where Watanabe was part of the team) and it's generally boring.

*I don't like Boogiepop Phantom. It's trying too hard to be difficult. And it doesn't help, that every character looks the same.

*I like Diebuster better than Gunbuster, because I'm a superficial bitch. And Diebuster just has more bling to it (Don't mean to say that Gunbuster is bad in any way though).

I might add some things, if I manage to come up with more.

I have no idea whether my views are controversial - but I disagree with many already expressed in this thread.

I don't like Golden Boy, though, which some people seem to. Intimacy with a toilet seat doesn't do it for me.

My God...

Anyway, controversial opinions, right?

-Well, I thought Kill La Kill was a good show, but can´t understand the insane love it got when it was airing.

-I really liked Kodomo no Jikan, the manga was great.

-The Akira manga makes the movie look like crap in the history department, but I don´t hold any real love for either version.

-Like with Akira, the Nausicaa manga makes the movie look like shit. I really should have watched the movie first, I could barely sit trough it because I tought the manga was so much better.

-DYRL is inferior to SDF Macross series.(I don´t care that the movie shows breasts and has great animation, it still isn´t as good as the original)

-Not leaving the topic of Macross, the Frontier 25 episode anime is better than the two movies. Surfing doesn´t make up for removing nearly all the development of the secondary characters.

-Gunbuster is the best thing Hideaki made.

-Dragon Ball GT wasn´t that bad.

-Kyoukai no Kanata was average.

:.Deep Breath.:

I think I may be forgeting something, but I don´t really have that many controversial opinions anyway
