The "smoking gun evidence" is flying around outside your window. This is just proof some of the relatives of minor dinos also had feathers, which is kinda obvious. I mean, if you came across a snake you might reasonably say, "hey, I bet some critters related to snakes also have scales!" Similarly, if you came across a mouse you might reasonably say, "hey, I bet some critters related to mice also have fur!" It's not rocket science, it's just common sense.

Well, that's a self-correcting problem.
