Weird. I was there. I didn't see that. And when I asked about its availability, they didn't know anything about it.

Bloody hell, where is a copy of Vol. 9? It's the only one I'm missing! :headbash:

Pretty interesting, I guess... Just hanging on 13 to drop later this year!

Bloody hell, where is a copy of Vol. 9? It's the only one I'm missing!

There's a company called Chuang-Yi based in Singapore who also license the title in English. They supply Madman here in Australia (Which is a company that does a lot of R4 anime releases here) so I'm sure there's plenty of volume nine from them if you don't care whether it's from Viz or not.

Their versions have dust covers too...

It would be easier if I lived in Australia, but I don't. Ironically Viz is based in San Francisco and I know where their HQ is, although they are largely nondescript.

The next time someone goes to the Philippines I’ll have to remember to ask them to look for vol. 9.

Another source for the 3-1 release, Googled it after seeing it mentioned on ANN forums: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neon-Genesis-Evangelion-3---1/dp/1421550792/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344275754&sr=1-7

December 6th is the UK release date.

Let's see...

1) Japanese tankoubon...
2) American comics (standard and collectors)
3) 1st edition release (standard and collectors)
4) 2nd edition release
5) omnibus release?

Alright... my shelf does not have any more room on it for this nonsense.

Curious if there are any differences between the first and second printings from Viz, like different/variant covers?

It would be easier if I lived in Australia, but I don't. Ironically Viz is based in San Francisco and I know where their HQ is, although they are largely nondescript.

The next time someone goes to the Philippines I’ll have to remember to ask them to look for vol. 9.

If you're super keen, I can probably hook you up with the CY/Madman volume nine if you want...

Omnibus information according to Amazon:

Volume 1: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1421550792/

Volume 2: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1421553058/

Volume 3: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1421553627/

Apparently they'll contain the color pages from the start of each volume this time around. I hope they'll look over the translation because I know Volume 8 was wonky in places.

So does anyone have the first omnibus? It was supposed to be released today. I can't find anything official, or anything akin to a photograph of the actual final product.

I (pre-)ordered it from BDUK, but I don't expect it in the mail for another week or two at least.

I just reread the manga like a month ago but I'll smash this lil' thing when it arrives, haha.

Here's Viz's product page for it: http://www.viz.com/product?id=10415

Very dated response to Blue Monday: Tempting, but the shipping and such would kill it probably. Picking up other Eva stuff only available in Oz would justify the expense but neither are of much priority.

Nice. Stoked about the the slightly larger format. I thought for sure we'd lose out on the colour pages, but nope... Sounds like a solid release.

EM, this is sort of a weird question; but how's the binding? I've found with a lot of "omnibus" books it can be tricky to keep from cracking or putting creases in the spine whilst reading.

Well, as I said, it's about the thickness of two volumes of the manga, rather than three. So it's not quite as thick as you would expect. The cover is printed on a slightly heavier glossy stock than what was used for the individual volumes. Looking at the spine, it looks like they gave it a generous layer of glue, maybe 2 mm or so. I tend to be very protective of my books, so I don't see myself creasing or cracking the spine unless I do it on purpose. So if you're the type of person concerned with that, I imagine the same would be the case for you.

By the way, seeing as how you're in Australia, how well has Madman kept the Evangelion manga in print over there? I think I've heard some North Americans resorting to the Australian release (particularly volume 9) because they were more available.

I don't go to comic stores often anymore, but the Madman copies are usually in better stock than the Viz editions, which are also sold here. According to their site, all 12 volumes are still in stock - but no note about the omnibus editions or Volume 13 on their release schedule, hard to say why, except that I've observed they released their edition of vol. 12 a little later than the Viz edition.

Two editions? Weird. Any considerable differences?

The Madman editions are the ones with the cover jackets.

I read the 3-1 Vol.1 version today. It was an interesting feel to read it back-to-back with Vol. 13 (--also made me notice the various Manga nods that NME 1.0 includes).

I'm not a big enough fan of the Manga to purchase it (something about it is harder for me to get into, in part I think the obvious lack of animation for battle scenes and my ambivalence about Shinji's manga portrayal) but I think NGE Manga fans should pick it up. The various commentaries from the original releases and included color artwork make it a great deal.

Super minor nitpick is how the 3-1 version has Rei say "Ikari" while Vol 13 has "Ikari-kun". Consistency, people!

Not surprising considering the length of time and how things have changed over the years. At the very least, the text is the same as the second edition circa... what, 7 years ago?
