super mega bump
(continuing conversation from recent halls)
View Original PostKenshin Sephiroth wrote:Konami basically did an abominably shitty transferring job with the graphics, prompting much deserved outrage in the SH community; even some of the Japanese creators from Team Silent have spoken out against this mess. Bugs and glitches that were nonexistent in the original have also been reported, as if this supposedly improved version was sloopily ported, then rushed through production without proper play-testing. I'm frankly a little saddened that you've given them your money for this faulty product; the general consensus among fans is that Konami has sold out on this otherwise praised and respected franchise.

Well there was a rather large update when I plopped the game in my PS3 it was like 250 MBs IIRC, so that might have been to fix the fog maybe but I have not really gotten all that far to say for sure
View Original PostKenshin Sephiroth wrote:It's a shame. I could go further into my feelings about the TERRIBLE new voice acting, but I'll let this thread convey the information and emotion.

I don’t really hate these new voices all that much maybe it is that I never played the original silent hill 2 so I have no connection to the old voices, although I have only heard two characters speak so far and I do enjoy hearing Troy Bakers voice.
View Original PostKenshin Sephiroth wrote:I hope you enjoy the games, all things considered. Try to at least read up on Silent Hill 1's story, as it is invaluable for the appreciation of all subsequent games. This video is required viewing if you haven't played the first game.

Well I am enjoying them so far although I am not all that far in the game, just one question did that epic music actually play when the vile was thrown at that girl because if it actually was plus 500 style points to the game.

Speaking of my experience, so far I am enjoying the games. I started with SH 2 and it has a great atmosphere the fog gives the town a very eerie feel to it. Although it has not really scared me at all so far but it did make jump at one point. Unfortunately though I have currently hit a standstill in SH 2 I m currently in the first apartment building you go in and for the life of me I can’t figure out where to go perhaps it is because I don’t have a flash light and for all I know I have been running into a wall for half an hour.

So after walking around in the dark apartment building for an hour I decided to give silent hill 3 a try. SH 3 is also pretty good so far when fighting monsters it gives you a real sense of how frail your character is (man those dogs). I also have not gotten very far in the game as well as I want to complete SH 2 first.

So all in all I am enjoying silent hill even though I got pretty stuck.

Thankfully, nope. That was just added in the video for comedic/epic effect (that music wouldn't have fit the scene anyway).

Don't despair about not finding the flashlight, it's somewhere in the apartment complex. Check all the rooms, and you can't miss it. Pay close attention to the thing it is attached to when you find it: it's a little subliminal detail that most players miss first playthrough, but it's just one of those tiny details that makes SH2 the pinnacle of video gaming as an artform it was upon release (and still is). You'll understand come the end.

Played 4 around ten years ago, and a month or so ago i've remembered a bit about this franchise. Researched a bit and have been enchanted by Silent Hill ever since.

Right now i'm playing Silent Hill 2 and 1, planning to play 3 after i finish 1. I have to say that by far 2 is my favorite on almost every aspect, it isn't as scary as 1 (which isn't the main charm for me when playing SH anyways) but i feel it contains the most developed characters and the best ambiance and presentation/narrative from all of the games. It's a shame actually that most games (with the exception of Shattered Memories i think) Don't keep this feeling of Silent Hill as a "sacred place" kind of like a purgatory or heaven. Truly a beautiful game, even when James's incredible denseness can be really irritating at times.

Silent Hill 1 Is way more scary in my opinion, and while the flat characters and (deceptively flat) plot don't feel as interesting, they do work in favor of making the game scarier, then again i just got into the school so i probably shouldn't say much about it yet. I do like Harry as a character though.

Yeah those small details or subtleties that give you a bit of character exposition, or at least more development into how their mind works or how they feel, is probably one of the best things of Silent Hill 2, and what makes it one of the greatest games in an artistic sense. I don't know how subtle the detail with the flashlight is though, but it would require the player to keep in mind something they might probably not care much about at the moment, certainly not as much as James would.

Silent Hill, perhaps one day. B/

Never had a PlayStation (or an XBox till recently), so I'm more aware of Silent Hill by reputation than anything else.

Despite that, I still came across and found I quite like "Tears Of...", which has earned a place on my playlist. Well maybe not "like", perhaps say "appreciate", "like" implies a more positive feeling than the song itself evokes,

If the game reflects the music, I can see why it's popular.

Funny, I beat that game, good ending and all, and somehow forgot about this song.

Finished Silent Hill 1 some time ago. Got the good+ ending, totally didn't use a guide.

Well, that was fun. The style of visceral terror and psychological subtleties is very achieved, and the PS1 graphics somehow accent the game's strenghts instead of detaching from them. The voice acting and character animations were occasionally great fountains of uninentional hilarity, particularly the former, but fortunately it's nothing that stands out as too noticeable, also helped by the fact that Team Silent seemed to have been outstanding in terms of animation and direction in the cut-scenes that mattered.

Use of the camera and other audio-visual elements were very astute and original as well, not only really capturing the sense of unwordly terror, claustrophobia and isolation that characterizes Silent Hill but being very aesthethically pleasing as well. Yet, along with the use of camera and shadows/fog to convey a sense of psychological terror, i think they also succeeded in causing a sense of uneasiness throught more subtle means. What i mean is, let's take the cafe area for an example, at first you're simply walking around, checking the area and collecting all the things you find. Now, because of the camera angle and how fast it goes, you're not even sure if you saw something behind the window, and you might even ignore it assuming you just imagined something. Then, after the hilarious radio line, an Air Screamer burst into the cafe, after the battle, any safety you might have felt in the save point gets broken in some manner, even while you know that no monster is going to come in there anymore, you simply don't feel protected from the town in there anymore now that the glass has been broken, even while you feel safe, you don't. Or at least that's what i felt in there. Of course this isn't something unique to savepoints, but it's where i noticed it the most.

The plot and characters felt kind of silly or fragmented, but what they did have was enought to keep the story interesting, and i have to admit that the concept of Cheryl being reborn by the goddess instead of you being able to rescue her is a very interesting change from what i was expecting.

Downpour was just terrible. It had so much potential but from the monsters to the glitches it gets a 7/10. Shame, cuz part 2 and 3 get 9.5's. Oh yeah, don't waste money on the Remastered ones either. Turns out they couldn't even find the final version, so they had to use imperfect beta versions. The differences with the original PS2 games are staggering, and not in a good way.....

Main problem I had with Downpour was it became too unfocused once you hit town. Really screwed the momentum the game had been building up until then.

I always imagined Del Toro would be a good choice for a Silent Hill movie. But collaborating with Kojima in a game that hopefully finally deserves the franchises name again? Sign me up.
Now bet, what will be released sooner, FFXV or Silent Hills?

I just watched most of a Let's Play of the PT demo and from the first few minutes I was like

:derp: I HAVE TO GET A PS4 NOW NOW NOW

Watching a video isn't enough, and I've purposefully stopped myself from finishing the video to leave something for me to experience first-hand. I could tell as I was watching that the safety of being the one not driving and having the presence of Markiplier's voice was putting just too much of a shield between me and the true terror I'd have experienced if I were playing the game myself. There were so many moments where I know I would have felt that kind of horror-game fear I haven't felt since SCP-087 -- of which the demo quite reminded me.

Do I watch the rest to sate myself and once more have no reason to get a PS4 or do I save the rest and get a PS4? Do I watch the rest or do I get a PS4?!

My wallet and soul can't take this! :crybaby:

EDIT: In the end, what happened was I needed something to watch while eating but I didn't want to watch the rest of the Markiplier video lest I spoil the demo's ending so I watched the PewDiePie video instead, and compared to Markiplier's approach to the game I was positively sucked in by PewDiePie's version, not as much as if I were playing it myself or even just watching a video without commentary but still enough to be so completely engrossed that I didn't want to stop even as the ending came.

And then I figured I might as well finish off the Markiplier video only to find that Markiplier couldn't figure out how to finish it. :hahaha:

"Legit scary" is right. That was some of the best damn horror I've seen. I wonder if it will be an experience like SCP-087 ("-B" or non-"-B") all over again when I finally play it.

This demo had it all -- everything that signals that the team behind it really fucking knows horror. Subtlety everywhere, and the game even messes with you beyond the fourth wall for the first time to my knowledge since Eternal Darkness over a decade ago. Hideo Kojima in particular is known for his attention to detail, and across the two playthroughs I watched I saw a lot of that. And on top of all of that, they've even bested the original four in being not above the occasional jumpscare to justify your paranoia. As I have described of my experiences with the original Silent Hill games, their ability to scare me was lost after I realized they would never actually pull the jumpscare trigger. This demo does, and knowing could happen made the quiet parts all the more tense.

I am so hype right now.

^Yeah, hopefully this will get the Silent Hill franchise out of its rut and back to good survival horror.

The only thing that could make this better is for Akira Yamaoka and Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn to come back to do the soundtrack.

I just watched the demo and it was absolutely amazing. This game is one of the reason why i'll buy Ps4.

Also, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G22MvYqNVZw

Kojima is fucking insane, in a good way.

Yeah, with this and all the other great PS4 exclusives coming out I'm seriously considering trying to get a PS4.

Since nobody else wanted to.
Gonna have to play through it again to remember fully bu i can just say: i love that there was a minimal amount of jumpscares in the game, the atmosphere was all the more incredible for it, also im biased in that i despise jumpscares and find them the lowest form of fear so that might be another reason i liked that.

Finished Silent Hill 2 (got the standard "Leave" ending despite trying for the "In Water" ending). It's a good game. But if this is supposed to be the best entry in the Silent Hill series then I'm pretty sure Kojima's Silent Hills will top it, easily.

Honestly, I think so too. P.T. was the scaredest a game had made me since I discovered the SCP games.

And the last time I played SH2 I got "Leave" while going for "In Water" too! I was on a kick to try to get all the endings and figured I'd start with the ending I got the first time I played it through years prior but after getting "Leave" I just YouTubed all the other endings and was content, and was glad that I had gotten something different because it really is a nice ending.
