The "Shinji = vagina" joke is based on the derogatory use of references to female genitals (namely "vagina" and "pussy") to imply that a male is weak / wussy / lacking in the manliness department. The misogynistic undercurrents of this language use, along with the implicit sexism toward gender non-normative (= not "masculine") males, are IMO quite insidious, and that's the real reason why I think we can and should do without "Shinji [or anyone else] is a vagina" jokes.

Thanks Tines and Reichu for the explanation. I have known the word c*nt being used as offensive abuse word against men (and women too), usually not because of any perceived sissyness. It seems that the usage of vagina against a man/boy has slightly different meaning. Also from what I know, c*nt means the vulva or the external female genitalia, not the vagina itself.

I think the pyramid building refers more to his relationship with Gendo, expecially if one takes a somewhat later instance of pyramid stomping into account.

She also has to wear clothes that make her look huge (= pregnant?)
I always saw ep 10 as relatively silly, but there might actually be some symbolism refering to Asuka's mommy issues/ fear of being like her mommy. She's also seen sexually presentung herself to Shinji in that episode (boobs pushed into face, she insists in wearing revealing clothes...) and we get a hint at her backstory at the end of the episode.
Anothing think that happens at the end is Asuka accepting/falling in love with a guy. ("You show-off" *sweet smile*), thereby accepting her role as a woman?

...No, I think Ramiel is more a source of male symbolism here - he puts his drill(phallus) into the cavity of nerv HQ (girl part)to create something new (sex), in this case, an Angel-friendly world (procreation)
