I actually LIKE the creepy overtones of S/R if the author actually deals with it rather than shoving it under the rug or ignoring it completely. This angle forces the relationship to take on interesting changes no matter how the players react, a damn far cry from all that boring WAFF floating about.

Yes I do fan fiction mainly I keep telling myself as a way of honing my skills to do original stuff one of these days.
I can't stand Rei very much because she has too little personality to work with.
I'm more then a little annoyed with myself at not actually turning out more then on short original work but thats for another thread.

There was an EVA Nerd here, but now he's gone.

Rescued from elsewhere:
While a well-written if sad/tragic story is good to read, I'll admit to being a sucker for a happy or at least a bittersweet ending. Hell, I've been trawling FF.N's Eva section for WAFF fics for the past three days (there's quite a lot of them, of varying degrees of quality).
I'm also guilty of the venial sin of "wanting to see one's favorite character/pairing happy": as a writer, I might not be able to fix how crap-sack the universe is, but it's fun to show those moments when things let up a little and they're actually enjoying life for a change.

::Raises hand::
I'm a fanfic writer myself, written in Zelda and writing in Harry Potter. However, as of recent gotten a bug for Eva, I blame rebuild, so I have again ventured into the genre.
I like fanfics that are Rei/Shinji..a guilty pleasure really. Yet, I'll read most things if its engaging. When it comes to AU versus Canon debate it all depends on the fic and the author. Read a few chapters into Aeon Natum Engel. It was good...but at the same time too far from Evangelion canon for me to get into. On the otherside I read Children of the Elder God and it I think did not stray so much. It does in the later chapters, but in a way I found very interesting. Then there is something like Shinji and 40K. The cover is there...but beyond that it is not Evangelion.
Then there's Neon Exodus Evangelion which....its hard. It's written well and the plot is pretty neat, but I don't think I could sit down and read it again.
I like where none of the characters are butchered. Asuka is a bitch, yes and Touji is a fool...but they each have their depths.
Grammar and Spelling I have to be able to read it. If the odd word is spelled wrong I'll overlook it. If the odd comma is off then I'll read it. If there are run-on sentences and winding words with no direction I hit the back button.

Haven't read Neon Exodus Evangelion: the fact that it's an admitted self-insert, plus the Gary Stu is from Worcester, Mass. were a bit off-putting (Isn't NERV-01 supposed to be in Cambridge, Mass., presumably on the campus of MIT?? It's a more logical location, aside from the fact that Cambridge might have some problems once the seas start to rise post Second Impact, since it's right on the Charles River, which is technically an estuary: it has tides like the ocean. Worcester is a nice enough town, but I don't see it playing host to any NERV facilities...)

Don't know why the Life Span of an Affair post was taken out but whatever.
Re-read it. STILL doesn't read right. Shinji comes off better (not perfect but better than crappy fan fiction or even the manga, as does Asuka and other cast members.)
Kaji seems out of whack, but I don't blame the author. Once again I'll voice the opinion he really needed more development, as now the author still has to find out to replicate a "cool but wise" man vibe Anno style.
Misato...err still reads like a character with a passing resemblance to the real thing, I'll get to that in a minute.
Still give it 4 out of 5 stars. It took a serious look at a coupling examining the ramifications Evangelion personalities in one, AKA it not being healthy and sort of justifying a few canon changes.
The problem lies in with really how Misato decides she 'wants' Shinji. In all honesty, I could have bought this if three broad things occurred. Kaji waited along time before arriving in Toyko 3, after Kaji's death, or just plain not having Kaji around. Not because she loves the good old Handsome leech mind you, just because its easier. As this story went into.
But the author seemed not to believe there was no genuine sexual tension between them in the first place, and apparently missed the subtle thing in 23' and written off the adult kiss in EoE as a form of snapping Shinji out of his depression. By extension, he cut himself off for the reasons Misato would hit on a 14 year old kid.
Because he is her perfect man. Handsome, cooks well, smart, likes taking care of himself and his physical surroundings; though not his personal feelings; has HUGE dependency issues. Enough on the latter, that if she showed him physical and mental affection, he would eventually return it ten fold if he thought that he wouldn't be betrayed in the process...and take care of her like the father she never had (Yes, two forms of symbolic incest in one go. Son to mom and daughter to father...Freud just came in his pants now).
She wanted him because he would never leave her, and unlike Hyuga is Bishonen (hey she's allowed to be vain too!)
Instead her it seems like the author thought that "She'd date him because he seems like a swell guy she could have a nice relationship with, because she could keep him under her thumb...sounds good so far....and would be good to her.....damn you messed it up)
Still overall good pick NemZ.
Someone is writing a version of My Immortal, with Eva characters. Will post link when I can find it. It was lulz worthy though.

No argument there. The initial setup seems rushed, probably to find enough time in the series cannon to flesh things out.
The only other thing that disappointed me is that other than Kaji there weren't any outside parties laying judgment on the relationship. I'd have expected Asuka to blow a damn gasket when she found out, hypocritical though it would have been.

What seems really arrogant and misaimed about it, is that we are supposed to take their opinions as unabashed fact. The author forgot half way in, they might have other self serving motivations to condem the relationship.
This is why Aoba and the bridge bunnies are there kids at home!
What would have been great, but doesn't happen, is seeing how Rits would react to this. Rits because, you know, she is basically doing what Shinji is. Having this dawn on her and the fallout from it would have been fun to see.
I won.
Quite so, the story definately missed a few opportunities. Objectively I rate it a solid B, but if we're grading on a curve against most fanfics it's an easy A.

Though of yet another one: Blatant "fix" fics. Now, if the "fix"-ing is done carefully and with much thought, the fic can be quite good. But if the author puts "I didn't like how :: Insert dislike du jour, usually 'How EoE ended':: " right in the summary or the author's notes, my usual tendency is reach for the back button, if I don't feel masochistic enough, or to go into MST-mode.

My problem is I liked EoE too damn much, so most of my fanfiction usually digresses into "WTF is reality? WTF is identity?" crap that gets impossible to reign in. Seriously--cerebral, ontological crisis mumbo jumbo is where it's at!MatrixRefugee wrote:But if the author puts "I didn't like how :: Insert dislike du jour, usually 'How EoE ended':: " right in the summary or the author's notes, my usual tendency is reach for the back button, if I don't feel masochistic enough, or to go into MST-mode.

Fanfiction.net must be in malware mode *again*: using the Ad Blocker (you'll find it under the "Help" menu on the top right of the page) that's part of the website seems to do the trick.

A weekend or two ago I discovered SerialRavist's Orchestrating the Silence, and ended up reading the entirety of it in one night. I was amazed that I hadn't heard of it anywhere on here, because it's a damned good post-3I story. Possibly the best one I've ever read.
It's written in alternating first-person perspective (the first chapter switches off a few times, the rest alternate with each chapter) and ventures through a decent amount of angst and darkness from Shinji's and Asuka's perspectives as we watch them change not so much by virtue of Instrumentality itself but rather by what happens next, eventually leading up to a very well-deserved happy ending.
The style does a nice job of keeping a relatively realistic style, in that it avoids reminding you that you're reading a story inspired by a cartoon, instead just feeling like you're just witnessing the chronicles of post-apocalyptic life for these two people. It makes reference to series events where applicable, of course, but avoids mentioning goofy, cartoony stuff that would take you out of the story and remind you that you're reading it. I guess it's something that might not really need to be mentioned, but it's an area this succeeds where a lot of other stories fall flat for me.
I really can't say enough good things about it, and even if I did I'd just end up inadvertently hyping it up too much, so...go read it. :P

I haven't written or really read any Eva fanfiction yet, but I have been a big participant in fanfiction for other fandoms. I like fanfiction in the fact that you get to explore things that weren't detailed upon in the original series, but actually, I mainly like it for the apparently lame aspect of shipping. Objectively looking on it, it can seem kind of stupid, but I think it's a very nice read and for the PORN (rule 34 anyone?). I've surprised by my perceived antipathy for "lemons" (people over the age of 14 use that phrase still?), because in my other fandoms, it seemed to be more accepted, or perhaps it was just the fact the fandom was larger and the shippers were separate from the general fandom. But since this a series where most of the characters are 14 or so, I think porn is kind of out of the question for them... But I'm still looking a Gendou/Yui "lemon" heheh...
So now that I think of it, shipping fic is the ONLY kind I read. I really can't stand plot, especially as the fic becomes less interesting, the author's flaws begin to appear more. I thought it was weird at a con I went to that said oneshots were good "practice" for longer fics.
