Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II
I really like Thunderbolt, it looks amazing, and manages to make us care for the characters in spite of the short running time. Both sides also feel quite complex, which is also a plus. Also, I really like the choice of music - reinforcing the divide of the two fractions also by choice of music. That being said, as soon as all Episodes are out, I need to rewatch it, the gaps between the Episodes is too big and the density in these is too much for me to get a real grip on it.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II
Thanks for the episode 3 link, I just watched it.
Lots of casualties on both sides and it ain't over yet. I feel like the body count might harken back to an homage to kill 'em all Tomino days when nobody was safe. Plenty of exposition on both sides and oddly enough, I didn't feel peeved when Io was complaining about the huge amount of teenage soldier reinforcements. Guess he's starting to grow on me but I still bond more with Daryl even if he weirdly didn't complain about having his right arm severed and considered it an honor.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II
Yep, Gundam Thunderbolt is indeed amazing. Along with The Origin and Unicorn, it's the best Gundam anime in the last decade. The problem is that it will soon end! The manga is still running and Bandai haven't announced more episodes.

My experience is almost entirely the opposite. I saw no reason to care for any of the characters, absolutely hated the choice of music, and was overwhelmed by the utter inhumanity and pointlessness of it all. Just . . . why, man? I mean, have these writers ever even seen MSG? Do they not recognize the sheer idiocy of having yet another Gundam running around in the OYW era? Are they not familiar with the freakin' Gelgoog, or the Gyan, or mobile armors, all of which met or exceeded the Gundam's capabilities and were in development at this time (which would render the whole "we gotta cripple this guy 'cause reasons! plot point moot)? The whole thing reads like a recipe for maximum angst, and none of it feels organic at all. Hell, why is this sector of space so damn important, anyway? Why is anyone committing any resources to controlling it? And why the hell does our soon-to-be-executed captain have a drug habit instead of drowning her sorrows in alcohol like everyone else in the military? I'm 3/4 of the way through the show and I still don't understand why anyone gives a shit.

If I had to guess; it's that it's still a Lagrange point. If the Federation left it alone, Zeon could use it as an epicenter to efficiently gather resources into; resources that they'd process & then distribute to the rest of their forces. Perhaps even build a factory to produce new weapons from.
To the other point; this Zeon front was probably lower on the requisition totem ( if they weren't simply cut off entirely), so they were overlooked for equipment exceeding that of the Rick Dom. All of the higher-performance stuff was reserved for the main front. Or, they've been cut off from the rest of their forces for months, and Zeon command never wanted to go to the effort to break/run the Feddie lines to resupply them.
Instead, the Zeons here were just given a bunch of mega-particle rifles and told to hold their grown with (along with a few experimental weapons annexes of their own), and it was assumed that they could make do. And for a time, it certainly would seem that this assumption paid off. They've out-fought Federal units several times their own size. If not for the Devil's luck, even the Gundam would have fallen to them.
And why the hell does our soon-to-be-executed captain have a drug habit instead of drowning her sorrows in alcohol like everyone else in the military?
She wasn't thirsty?
Higher-middle class background--- perhaps she was exposed to it early, and has been addicted long before taking command?
Meh-- I just like the show because the scene of watching that Musai get picked apart by the Gundam was oddly cathartic. I don't hate the music, but I do admit to finding the choice pretentious. We should have at least been given a reason why the pilot would prefer this music to something else.

Why? Preferences are just that - can any of us give reasons for them beyond, say, exposure during upbringing - which is pretty boring really.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II BP
I was thinking "played a brass/strings instrument commonly used for Jazz". Like, this was something he did, or tried to do.
Wouldn't be the first time in Science fiction, and it would synergize well, I think, with him listening to it while he does what he does now; something he is shown to, and is accused of, enjoying.
But to answer the question: Because Jazz is clearly out of place in this setting. Without a humanizing catalyst for why; it just feels like something the creator threw in there to be "different" for difference's sake.

Bandai announced that they will release an HD remaster of G Gundam on Blu-Ray this November. If we take account the Blu-Ray versions of previous Gundams (Zeta, Wing, Turn A) the quality will be amazing. Here is a trailer and a tv cm.

Gundam Thunderbolt ep. 4
Ah, I was a bit taken back at how Zeon sent reinforcements, and thus *technically* winning the fight, in a battle I thought was decided as a pyrrhic victory for the Federation.
But it seems this wasn't truly to reinforce them; merely to gather the remaining forces up so as to reinforce A Baoa Qu.
I'm guessing that everyone involved still dies.

Thunderbolt had great action but lacked agenda to be interesting enough. It's good enough for the moments you just want to sit back and watch Space Nazis and Feddies duke it out though.
Here is hoping the movie adds a bit more meat.

Gundam Thunderbolt Ep. 4
Meh. The story lacked any depth and was just one big clusterfvck - I hoped that the final fight would be good, but it was very mediocre too. The action and animation are okay in this OVA, but everything else sucked. The characters were boring and un-memorable, the drama was pathetic, the romance was cringe worthy and forced af. The whole thing was just bad. I'll only get a few tracks from the OST and never watch this again. Most disappointing.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II
Well, the posters above all said what I thought about Thunderbolt: Very nice looking, but with little else to make it actually worth watching.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket: "You never give up Forever!" Damn, I knew this was going to be focused on the War is Hell thing and all that but I was not expecting one of the silliest, most 80's soundtrack I ever had the er.."pleasure" of listening to be in it. I guess it was okay most of the time but there were a few moments were I felt the track selected was a bit too cheerful for the events depicted.
Soundtrack aside, the animation was really good and there were some really standout moments. Al was also less annoying than I expected him to be.
Best Gundam show I watched so far and Bernard is the best!

SPOILER: Show
I didn't really get the point of the very sparse bits of contact Bernie had with Christina. Was it supposed to be a tragic romance? Because if so they really didn't give it enough time.
And Bernie...poor guy, he didn't have to die like that.
