I've never had much luck on my final models looking impressive due to not knowing how to paint them properly. What is the best way to make the Eva models look as shiny and pretty as they do in the Bandai display?

I just finished painting an older Unit 01 that had been on my to-do list for awhile. Came out a little sloppy, but not bad at all for my first time trying to paint... anything ever. I can only get better from here. :P

And I have a 2.0 Awakened ver. coming in tomorrow. Man, does that thing look sweet. I can't wait.

I wanted to ask, is the Type-F equipment Unit 01 kit very good? I really want to get it, but I'm tempted to just buy the half-priced Revolotech figurine....

Corb: The F-type unit 01 of revoltech has always been cheap. Never was popular, like 00 yellow. It has only a couple of daggers, and the bulky armor makes it difficult to pose...
I ordered a, F-type bandai kit model, hasn't arrived yet... Once I get it I'll tell you how is it... I ordered it only for the weapons it has ;D

Able to pick this up! Went to pick up the Yamato YF-19 only, but after the next two buses home were delayed by an hour(darn you GO transit!).

Suddenly had time to go pick up my HG New Movie Version Eva Unit-02, and I should've done it sooner. I've had a chance at building this kit already for a friend who also got one, so this should be a relatively pleasent build again.

Just another thing, is there anyone anyone else hoping Bandai's next Perfect Grade kit slated for 2010 Winter release is gonna be a HEAVILY revised PG Evangelion Unit-01(or well any of the other Units)? I'm thinking the timing is just about ripe for anther PG Eva Unit-01, as the movies' popularity is almost peaking; and I'd hope Bandai would release it after people have seen some of Eva Unit-01's best screentime.
Rei used Smile.

The announcement of another PG in the winter was in the Gunpla catalog, not general Bandai Plamo. It will be gundam and not anything else. Right now Bandai cares more about it's own franchises like Unicorn, 00 Movie and Gunpla Builders.

Dont buy the revo
Since Eva isnt a strong title for Bandai thier eva kits arent as good as their gundams are but they are good enough to be worth 3000+ yen
The eva f-type is considerably better than Bandai's old 1/100 HG
good articulation but the legs wont give more than a 100 degree angle
Its toes do bend up
chest piece pops of at all times so glue is your friend
2 Prog daggers + dual saw + Matsema A.W.(what does it means ?)= awesome poses
3 seys of hands fists, open, holding.
Entry plug pops out of course
nice bend on the arms(no rubber)
8 diferent colors
A very nice model but paint will make it even better, get some gundam markers for that.
An action base 1 will go very good with this eva
I have mine displayed on a stand ( to keep it from falling over) with the matsema over its shoulder , the dual saw resting on the table and a prog dagger in its mouth

I only bought if to have the Mastema and the Double Saw for my RVTK's... And a Rebuild 1.0 Eva 00 for the Lance of Longinus...
Image
I assembled Unit 01-F and I must say I didn´t like it at all... It may be very detailed an all but the lack of mobility and articulations is just annoying... And Unit 00, well, I only opened the bag with the Lance, it's good as new...

View Original PostTMBounty_Hunter wrote:Alrighty then. My Awakened Ver. Eva-01 arrived on tuesday, I snapped it wednesday and been taking a few pics. So as previously posted lineart shows there's quite a few changes between 1.0 and 2.0 Eva-01 and the Dengeki page shows most of them, but it's still fun to do a direct comparison.

The neck has been shortened and reshaped: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/necks.jpg
The normal and the super angry Awakened head parts: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/heads.jpg

Other than that to me the biggest and most awesome change is the torso sculpt. It always looked a little iffy to me on the original Rebuild kit, didn't really look like the armor fit together nicely and was a little skinny. The new Rebuild 2.0 Eva torso sculpt is much lovlier. Not side by side comparisons this time because it's more fun to see the changes by opening up the pics in different tabs and flipping between the two versions. Some of these also show the different sculpt of the thighs but the difference really isn't nearly as noticable.

http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/torso_11.jpg

Then another really obvious change is the arms (included original TV kit just for fun): http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/arms.jpg
New and old parts: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/trees_01.jpg

That last pic is probably the most interesting to me because with it I finally understand how the hell bandai splits up their molds into both block for design variation and colors. That little defect gives it away, it seems on each side of the mold they have a twistable little part to direct the flow where they want when they want some variation. This new tree also shows that it's been made with Eva-02 in mind. Unlike 00, 01 amd 03, the upped shoulder on 02 are a different color than most of the armor:
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/05.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/trees_02.jpg

Overall the Awakened Ver. kit is very fun, both flavors of the orange parts even glow unter UV light http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/glow.jpg

So far in this new lineup of Eva kits we have:

01 - Eva-01 Rebuild 1.0
02 - Eva-00 Rebuild 1.0
03 - Eva-01 Rebuild 2.0 Awakened
04 - Eva-01 Rebuild 2.0 Vanilla
05 - Eva-02 Rebuild 2.0

With the way the new molds are made Bandai could very easily pop out with little effort:
Eva-00 Rebuild 2.0
Eva-03
Eva-04 (like more than a decade ago, chrome the 03 and add the shield from the Pachinko game)

With a little more effort they could do Eva-05, but that might end up almost a 6000 yen kit probably. That's going from Eva-02 being 4500 from only a few extra guns and a jetpack. The massive 4-legged Eva-05 would easily top 5000 for sure.

Some non-spoilerific lineart for 2.0:
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/04.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/05.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/06.jpg

Also I'm not quite sure if I've mentioned this earlier, but 2.0 also has Eva-06 which is another simple humanoid. That could be another simple kit for Bandai to pop-out, but I don't really remember that many design details of it other than a visor head. Finally from the trailer for 3.0 we know there is an Eva-08, which also implies and Eva-07 somewhere in the future. Still tons of kits to do, but the wait could be loooooooooooooong.

Hi TMBounty_Hunter,

The amount of above links is impressive- the only thing is I can't view a single one of them (lost links?).

I'm currently contemplating whether or not to buy the Evangelion 2.0 Eva 01(NOT awakening version) Model kit. Still looking for the differences....

Thread Necro.

I just managed to get my hands on the awakened Unit 01 there over the weekend at a con. Finally opened the box after building a RG Rx-78 and I'm feeling all giddy at what I've found inside.

I've built the original series Unit 01 and this is just on another level above that. They've fixed all the little niggles and irritations.

First of all, the instruction manual. The diagrams are clear and conscise, which is helpful because I can't read moon. It's also got a little nifty style itself, using NERV fonts and styles stolen from the series. There's also a border index that makes it easy to navigate back and forth through the manual to find sectors you want.... especially if you're building things out of order.

Opening the box, there're a massive amount of frames inside. I don't think I'm wrong to think there's more in there than the original model (Which came with a positron cannon on its own sprue)

If I really wanted to, I could probably get away without painting this quite easily. Most parts are moulded in the colours they need to be. It's pretty conceivable that all you'd have to do with it would be panel lining.

You get parts to make a standard Unit 01 (with angry red trim),including retractable prog-knife and pallet rifle, or parts to make the fully awakened version including a spare head. And most cool-- a set of transparent sparkling left arms and a halo

I haven't actually put it together, but first impressions from studying the parts suggest that not only is it a little more complicated than the original, it may have better articulation overall, some of the joints are made up of more parts, rather than being solid plastic ball-joints.

Oh. And Polycaps.

To bad there isn't enough space in the body/arm for batteries and wires to run an LED to the left arm.

just be careful with the lower jaw and the cheeks
they are quite fragile

also, you might want to paint the inner frame on the waist to solve the stability issue

That's how I got the other one to stand. Though I'm pleased to note that it comes with a stiff cable that actually clamps into position. Which might give me a third support.

Also.

Remind me never to use spray-on varnish again. It just ruined an RG Rx-78 on me. It went solid grey.

After working on the test piece.

Oh. I've got sprays alright. I use undercoats regularly.

The real problem are some varnishes which go solid and cloudy when you spray them which effectively ruins the model

Nail varnish in spray?
try using regular spray paint flat (or gloss) top coats
