Have you heard of Motifs in music? It is not uncommon for composers to adapt, reuse, and reincorporate pieces from previous work into later work. Some would argue that this is the mark of a great musician. John Williams, who is considered one of the greatest film composers does this quite heavily. I'm not so sure if Shiro deserves the same reverence, but I do know that someone cannot rip off themselves, as Shiro did the music for both Evangelion, and Kare Kano. Is it lazy? Not really. If you've noticed, he did a lot more original work for 2.0 than for1.0.

This is nothing new, really. At first the "loans" confused me because I instantly associated those compositions with KK. However, on the second view I realised that they are so well used in 2.0 that it doesn't really matter. It might be "lazy", but it works so damn well I don't care about it.

"No you wouldn't. Oz's secret is he goes without food to buy that stuff. He hasn't eaten in years." - Brikhaus

"Often I get the feeling that deep down, your little girl is struggling with your embrace of filmfaggotry and your loldeep fixations, and the conflict that arises from such a contradiction is embodied pretty well in Kureha's character. But obviously it's not any sort of internal conflict that makes the analogy work. It's the pigtails." - Merridian
"Oh, Oz, I fear I'm losing my filmfag to the depths of Japanese pop. If only there were more films with Japanese girls in glow-in-the-dark costumes you'd be the David Bordwell of that genre." - Jimbo
"Oz, I think we need to stage an intervention and force you to watch some movies that aren't made in Japan." - Trajan

oh come on you guys just face the truth.

yes the music fits. I loved it when I heard it.

but when I found out on youtube that it wasn't original music, it was a bit disappointing.

Now that the links are fixed, I actually like the music more. I really like the use of stuff from Kare Kano. It works really well.

This is hardly lazy, and it is obviously done intentionally. Do you really think a musician would go through all the trouble of producing the track if it wasn't? Many musicians do this, not because they're musically lazy, but because it's effective as an art.

...It's not a "rip off" if the composer is using his own previously composed pieces. Besides, the composition of the Karekano pieces with what's used in 2.0 ARE at least using different arrangements or orchestration.

For reference's sake, here's the list of Karekano pieces:

2.0 OST Disc 1 (In-film versions of the pieces used, as such, some don't have a "full" version):

    2EM05_KK_B09
    2EM06_KK_B16
    2EM07_KK_B09_InDoor
    2EM10_KK_C01_AddGuit
    2EM12_KK_A09
    2EM17_KK_A08
    2EM18_KK_C01
    2EM20_KK_A09_Kuriya
    2EM21_KK_C01_Str+AcGuit
    2EM22_KK_A08_Orche

2.0 OST Disc 2 (full versions of the pieces plus some bonus tracks):

    String Opus I
    Unpeeled Potatoes
    String Opus II
    Instability [Orchestra]
    Instability [Piano Solo]
    Mellow2009

Dark doom: Fan trailer or whatever use whatever music people want them to use. And Gurren Lagaan's composer was Taku Iwasaki, not Shiro Sagisu.

The piece Yamashita (2EM09_YAMASHITA) from the film The Man Who Stole the Sun is also a different arrangement from what that particular film uses. Either way, it's an homage which there's nothing wrong with.

2.0 also has it's fair share of background pieces from other sources used in the film (NGE and 1.0 did this too, with the Kotono Mitsuishi - Lilia from Ys and Masami Okui songs).

2EM19 is Variations on a Theme By Mozart, while ふりむかないで (Furimuka naide, Don't turn your face) by The Peanuts and 恋の季節 (Koi no Kisetsu, Season of Love) by Kon Youko and 'Pinky & Killers' are old school songs. Of course, 今日の日はさようなら (Today is the day for Goodbye) and 翼をください (Please Give Me Wings) are songs from the 70s ("Today" is an enka song), fitting ones at that.

Also, merged with the music thread.

Not only do I not mind them using Kare Kano, I hope they keep at it. There are a few other peices that could find their way into 3.0+...

I like the latter-romantic feel of the chorus music Shiroh Sagisu composed for the movies, ("Angel of Doom", "In my spirit", "Final decision we all must make", "Keep you heads above the Mayhem" and "Carnage") but i'm missing some classics like Mahler, Wagner, Bruckner, Brahms and Beethoven himself, i think they would be a perfect fit for the ST of the rebuild.

Crossing fingers for having back the 9th at the very least...
Won't complain if Aleluyah, Amen and Air in G do so too...

Does anyone know if there's a record of the version of Tsubasa wo Kudasai that played in Noguchi and that comes as an extra in the DVD?
