Thematically I don't really think it makes sense for him to be rewarded and join everyone, on the contrary. He knows he's screwed and accepts his fate. What's left of him are his glasses and Rei 2's feelings for him.

Bringing it back to NTE, it might also make mores sense thematically if he failed to reunite with her in EoE but succeeded in Shin, tying into the whole "set right what once went wrong" theme it has going on for the characters (which isn't to say that's direct evidence of them being in the same continuity, just that Gendo's fate in EoE being that would fit better with his fate in Shin this way).

Looks like the pairings of the characters are all revealed in the poster. Mari stands close to Shinji, Asuka and Kensuke are the both on the edge of the group and Rei and Kaworu are close together in the middle.
