Just a small addition regarding the runtime thing, Yoko Higuchi who was a production assistant in Shin Godzilla claimed to have known about the 2.5 hours runtime since a while ago and when being asked about it, this is his response:

Higuchi has a pretty interesting background story on how he ended up being involved in Shin Godzilla's production and there's a great, detailed interview about it which you can read here.

That's an interesting little bit of confirmation, and an even more interesting story to go with it!

View Original PostGendo'sPapa wrote: Though I do wonder if the Olympics, scheduled to start July 23, could make them want to avoid that. I still think Shin Ultraman is going for June 26, which would have been the one year anniversary of Shin Eva and is the first official weekend of the Summer season. The posters are saying "Early Summer", lol.

That's a very good point, and it looks like Japan has now committed to going ahead with the Olympics on July 23 after all the initial talk of cancellation. Whether or not that's a smart move in the age of COVID-19 is HUGE discussion of its own.

Didn't realize the Ultraman posters were saying "Early Summer", so you're right, that's likely June 26 to give breathing room before the Olympics. And that in turn, suggests that they'd want Shin Eva to finish its run, and assuming at least a three-month theatrical run for something the size of Shin Eva, pushes things to no later than March 27, and more likely March 13 or 20.

Eh, this is as far as I'm willing to engage in informed speculation about the Shin Eva release without anything more concrete at hand. Someone with a better understanding of factors like the need for scheduling advertisements, the logistics of theatrical availability or the need to release before the March 31 fiscal year ends might have a better idea about the actual release date.

Somehow I can imagine the distributors (Toho/Toei) wanting Shin Eva to be the first post-lockdown blockbuster like what they did with Demon Slayer back in October 2020, as sinister as that might sound. The film pretty much has all the success formula to attract as many people possible to go back to cinemas, I just hope they won't do super questionable stuff this time like not applying the distanced sitting protocol.

The Rebuilds are rated G? I thought they were rated the Japanese equivalent of PG-13. What the heck was EoE rated, then? What IS their ratings system?

Apparently G is the Japanese equivalent of something between PG/PG-13. You also gotta keep in mind that Japan also has a different standard for what’s acceptable for kids, with a higher threshold for disturbing imagery being acceptable.

G stands for "General Audiences: all ages admitted", and this is the same rating for the other three films.
Apparently they do not consider violence with non-human creatures to be something horrible and that must have some kind of restriction.

Other ratings:
  • PG12 (PG-12): Parental Guidance Requested. Some material may be unsuitable for children under 12. Parents are advised to accompany their children during the film.
  • R15+ (R-15): Restricted to teenagers 15 and over only. Children and teenagers under the age of 15 are banned from viewing the film.
  • R18+ (R-18): Restricted to adults 18 and over only. Children and teenagers under the age of 18 are banned from viewing the film.

“É porque nós gostamos de você. Obrigada por conversar comigo. Vem, me dá a sua mão para andarmos juntos.” — Rei to Shinji (Portuguese dub).

But what I don’t understand is how EoE, of all movies, was able to get a G rating. I know Japan has looser standards when it comes to objectionable content, but even they probably wouldn’t typically declare a movie featuring masturbation and sex, lots of bloody deaths, and graphic nudity to be “suitable for all ages.” Does anyone know what their thought process there was?

IMDb says End of Evangelion got an R-15 in Japan. Is there another source that says otherwise?

Well, I saw that the movie got re-rated G for its recent theatrical re-release, and I just assumed it was always rated like that. I guess they just decided now that the movie had a good enough reputation for people under 15 to be allowed to watch it. R-15 makes much more sense though.

Maybe they know that hospital scene is nothing in an age where kids see much worse on the internet all the time.

Did you see older post comparing the situation to Blade Runner in Germany? I could try digging that up.
But basically it could be they saw the film's lessons as valuable enough that kids could be exposed to it.

The other option is that there was no thought process lol

This is what it says on the EIRIN site in the English version:
Film Classification and Rating Organization (EIRIN) wrote:Films are classified according to the treatment and impact of the eight main classifiable elements of public concern, specifically theme, language, sex, nudity, violence & cruelty, horror & menace, drug use, and criminal behavior. Classification also depends on the context. It is illegal to show indecent images of minors under the age of 18, and to show a work that is obscene. Real explicit sex and detailed exposure of sexual organs are not allowed, nor is pornography.

I presume this is almost the same analysis process around the world. My point of attention is "Classification also depends on the context".

End of Evangelion was rated 一般映画 (ippan eiga/Movie for General Audiences) back in 1997. Even after the system got changed in 1998 and EoE gets re-rated through Revival of Evangelion re-release last year, it's still rated G.

How could IMDb have gotten this wrong? :reiquiz:

Not to request anyone do homework on my behalf or anything but now I wonder if theres ever been a film Anno has made that's not rated G.

Well, IMDb entries can be edited by anyone as long as you have an account, so now we know that whoever put the R-15 rating didn't do much research. I've also checked Anno's directed works and looks like only Love & Pop is rated R.

We can definitely put all worries in relation to Shin's age rating to rest. I doubt there were any limitations.
Why L&P got R while EoE got G though I'm not sure I understand though. Cause it's live action? Maybe these ratings just don't make much sense.

It’ll be rated 15 in the U.K. most likely.

Won’t seem real though when finally seeing it in the U.K.

Kind of just savouring a bit of patience as it is the end of a long era

Not quite an update, but I just noticed khara nigouki changed her header to the film's English logo and the TBD 2021 release window, pretty sure she had a different one until a few days ago.
SPOILER: Show
Image

I'd rather not read too much about this, but I have to point out that it reminds me when Eva Official changed their header from the railway poster with January 23 release date to the kids at the beach with no release date at all, just a few days before the second delay was announced, so I DO hope this means something considering the recent activities (accidental Eirin entry being uploaded, the banners being installed on 109 Cinemas Osaka Expocity).

EDIT:
She also partially changed the account description to "Operated under 90% of arbitrary voice, 10% by the voice from heaven" (I think it previously says "Shin Evangelion now in production"). Wanna bet that "heaven" probably means the Big Boss Anno himself?

FYI, here's an update on the state of emergency. Osaka and Kyoto are set to lift them this week, but Tokyo will continue until at least March 7.
I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever
