I assume he meant unit 03. At the risk of getting into another "what color is Misato's hair?" debacle, I'll just note that historically Bardiel's ride has used blue for shading and according to some sources it's not actually black but rather a deep midnight blue.

Have to say, I'm not really feeling this banner. I think a long shot of Unit-3 walking through the countryside would have been a better choice. Not to mention the color scheme seems off. I'm looking forward to Zeruel in a week or two though.

I kind of want to see old school Zeruel vs. the Tenth Angel... Since the new design has basically nothing in common with the old one aside from the face (and quite intentionally), it only seems right.

This one was a struggle, honestly. I went through several different ideas that just weren't working before settling on this one because the schedule was getting out of whack.

This is one of my favorite scenes in both the original series and 2.0. The scene where zeruel breaks into the command room, and comes within mere feet of Gendo's face. Then Shinji in Eva 01 busts through the wall tackling Zeruel, who then slices off one of Unit 01's arms splattering LCL blood all over the place.

and Gendo doesn't even flinch.

I think it's the blue flame/water motif the signals the transition from reality to instrumentality, vice versa.

I saw it as a fist as well, and was wondering if it was representative of the new arm that Eva-01 grows during that episode.

You're both right; it's Shinji's "I'm the pilot!" decision fist superimposed over the blue fire/droplet thing. Basically Zeruel before and after, with the reasons for his downfall unified in the middle.

Oh, and credit goes to Paul for some help getting to this particular concept (even if it's not what he actually meant ) when I was feeling stuck and unsatisfied earlier.
