Bandai's Rebuild model kits

After years of waiting without even a peep out of Bandai....this news is disappointing

http://ngeekhiong.blogspot.com/2010/02/new-evangelion-plamo-gurren-lagann.html

The first new Bandai kits (Eva-01 and 00) came out back in August 23rd 2007, a good 2 weeks or so before the first movie hit theatres. Since then Bandai has been regularly popping them out every few months along with the old TV/EoE kits, but there was absolutely no news of anything from 2.0 until now, so later after release. And now all we get is typical Bandai behaviour, a recolor or an existing kit when an equal amount of effort could have poped out some new models :\

I just hope this means they're still interested in keeping the model line (yes they did actually start numbering them so many moons ago) going and I'll finally get my Rebuild Eva-02. I also hope that by the time Q/Final roll around they'll be popping new Evas out like mad. They could milk this in a really awesome way but yet they dont :(

I think Bandai will abandon the "Model Kit" market for Evangelion and instead invest time and money into the action figure market. I mean why else are they investing their efforts in the HCM Pro line to coincide with the release of Evangelion 1.0?

And now with Evangelion 2.0, they are in intent on churning out Eva Robot Damashii action figures. Evas are definitely no Gundam and deserve better than limited and clunky Bandai Model kits.

The bandai kits are neither limited nor clunky.

Toys are for pussies anyway. Real men build and paint their favorite cartoon fetish objects anyway.

Now where have I heard that before? Your not the first to say that. My Uncle, a really big prolific model kit builder of naval, air force and other military vehicles, said the same thing to me about a year ago when i mentioned my hobby with collecting pre-painted mecha and action figures. He like has enough model kits to open a large store in his house. And yes when he builds his kits and paints them the end result product often looks better than even museum quality displays.

Though its true that in the hands of a really dedicated master, you can make any model kit shine.....lets face it. Not all of us are like that. Nor do all of us have the time.

There is still one thing you got to admit though. Model kits are primarily display pieces....statues if you will. Not meant to be posed and put into various action poses. With that in mind.....dont you think that has already limited your argument somewhat? Model kits are clunky and lack the finess to replicate the poses and action moves seen in the NGE or Rebuild movies. If you want a statue or diorama fine. But for those that want more action....figures are the way to go.

I have the Rebuild Eva 00 model and I was not happy with the result (due to some issues with the segmented torso). It's pretty clear that Bandai didn't put the same kind of effort into their secondary licenses (such as the Rebuild Eva models) as they do with even High Grade Gundam models. Are the older Evangelion models any better?

On the other hand, the HCM pro figures are among the best Eva figures I've ever had (they're only beaten by the Xebec figures).

I have the older High Grade Unit 01 and Unit 02 models from Bandai. These were released for the original NGE tv series. If your wondering about quality of the plastic...they arent too bad. The joints are fairly well done too. If i had painted them they would look fairly good i guess. But these guys lets face it were never meant to do any substantial acrobatics and action poses. So in those respects these models fail hard.

So the new Eva-01 Awakened Ver. finally came out. I have to say, it is so much more awesome than I expected. You get most of the old kit with quite a few parts unused. Like with the old kits this really comes in handy sometimes. For this new one you not only can build the Awakened Ver., but also get all the parts need to build a plain, updated Eva-01.

Changes: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/rebuild_updated_eva-01.jpg
-lower torso armor resculpted
-neck resculpted
-both old head and new Awakened raging head included
-outer parts of the upper shoulder updated to go along with the slight redesign between the movies, see lineart
-thighs resculpted
-added effects parts

Pics at hobbysearch: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10108846

I really hope they hurry up with the new Eva-02. The movie comes out on DVD and BD in Japan on May 26th, they could easily pop it out in time.

------------EDIT--------------

It looks like my prayers have been answered

May release:
* Eva Unit 1 New Theatrical Ver. - 3,500 Yen (exclusive of tax).

June release:
* Eva Unit 2 New Theatrical Ver. - 4,800 Yen (exclusive of tax).

The yet another Eva-01 is probably just a normal color updated version without the gimmicks which is why the price is lower.

On the other hand Eva-02 is much more expensive, probably due to the backpack and the tons of guns.

Alrighty then. My Awakened Ver. Eva-01 arrived on tuesday, I snapped it wednesday and been taking a few pics. So as previously posted lineart shows there's quite a few changes between 1.0 and 2.0 Eva-01 and the Dengeki page shows most of them, but it's still fun to do a direct comparison.

The neck has been shortened and reshaped: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/necks.jpg
The normal and the super angry Awakened head parts: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/heads.jpg

Other than that to me the biggest and most awesome change is the torso sculpt. It always looked a little iffy to me on the original Rebuild kit, didn't really look like the armor fit together nicely and was a little skinny. The new Rebuild 2.0 Eva torso sculpt is much lovlier. Not side by side comparisons this time because it's more fun to see the changes by opening up the pics in different tabs and flipping between the two versions. Some of these also show the different sculpt of the thighs but the difference really isn't nearly as noticable.

http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/torso_11.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/torso_12.jpg

Then another really obvious change is the arms (included original TV kit just for fun): http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/arms.jpg
New and old parts: http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/trees_01.jpg

That last pic is probably the most interesting to me because with it I finally understand how the hell bandai splits up their molds into both block for design variation and colors. That little defect gives it away, it seems on each side of the mold they have a twistable little part to direct the flow where they want when they want some variation. This new tree also shows that it's been made with Eva-02 in mind. Unlike 00, 01 amd 03, the upped shoulder on 02 are a different color than most of the armor:
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/05.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/trees_02.jpg

Overall the Awakened Ver. kit is very fun, both flavors of the orange parts even glow unter UV light http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/glow.jpg

So far in this new lineup of Eva kits we have:

01 - Eva-01 Rebuild 1.0
02 - Eva-00 Rebuild 1.0
03 - Eva-01 Rebuild 2.0 Awakened
04 - Eva-01 Rebuild 2.0 Vanilla
05 - Eva-02 Rebuild 2.0

With the way the new molds are made Bandai could very easily pop out with little effort:
Eva-00 Rebuild 2.0
Eva-03
Eva-04 (like more than a decade ago, chrome the 03 and add the shield from the Pachinko game)

With a little more effort they could do Eva-05, but that might end up almost a 6000 yen kit probably. That's going from Eva-02 being 4500 from only a few extra guns and a jetpack. The massive 4-legged Eva-05 would easily top 5000 for sure.

Some non-spoilerific lineart for 2.0:
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/04.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/05.jpg
http://www.mresources.info/hobby/Shogouki/06.jpg

Also I'm not quite sure if I've mentioned this earlier, but 2.0 also has Eva-06 which is another simple humanoid. That could be another simple kit for Bandai to pop-out, but I don't really remember that many design details of it other than a visor head. Finally from the trailer for 3.0 we know there is an Eva-08, which also implies and Eva-07 somewhere in the future. Still tons of kits to do, but the wait could be loooooooooooooong.

Nice model kits. Though i still dislike the Unit 01's torso. Looks to tv series-ish to me and not necessarily as faithful to the Rebuild movies as i would want them to be.

Also quick question, but will you painting your Eva model kits to add the finishing details? If so which paints will you use?

Whenever I do get around to painting my kits they'll be airbrushed with Mr. Color paints. I'm hoping to have one of ye olde TV Eva-02 kits done by the time the Rebuild kit comes out in June.

TMBounty_Hunter.- Good! Tell me: I've seen many reviews on youtube and some online shopping stores, but none is very specific about certain stuff, can you please tell me:
-How tall the figure is fully assembled?
-It comes with a Lance of Longinus right? If so, how long is it (in inches)?
-What other accesory comes with the figure?
-Does it have stand or base?
-If a train departs from New York at 3:00 pm directed to Washington, travelling at 70 miles per hour, at what time will it arrive?

-about 21cm (really depends how you post it, spread and bent legs, bet torso, etc)
-yes, they recycled the awesome huge 4-piece lance from the 2nd old MP Eva kit. it's 36.3cm long
-it's all listed on the box. websites like Hobby Search have scans of the box/manuals and pics of the kit and show you all you get
-see box (shorter answer: no)
-the train wouldn't travel at 70mph but at about 310mph because while everyone is distracted by the oil spill Obama build a bullet train network connecting all the major cities on the east coast

Yes! I'm totally buying it!
36.6 cm is huge! Revoltech's is only about 30 and its almost -flat-
(yes... I'm buying it for the lance only ;D)
-I knew Obama was up to something!
Any info of the same bizarre sort on the Bandai model kit F-type Unit 1; and release date for the 2.0 unit 00? (yes, buying it only for the missile)

No announcement of any sort at all. The Shizuoka Hobby show one was just for show and does not in any way guarantee that the missle will be included. Although the molds are pre-planned to allow the updated Eva-00, noone knows how long Bandai plans to dick around before actually releasing it. The Side-Eva toy is pretty much as complete a package as you can get if you want the 2.0 Eva-00. Bandages and missle included.

Wait, you mean the Damashii [or Robot Soul]? I can't afford that one... I've seen it for $90, and many other sites won't ship to Mexico...
