Perhaps it would be easier to compare if both screenshots were the same resolution.

They were taken off the DVDs at native resolution. The difference in size would hardly account for the fuzziness and loss of detail in the Manga caps that is (despite TheBlueTree's astounding comment) glaringly apparent.

You remember how oblivious I am to these things? I can't really see an important difference between the commentary screencaps "raw" and after you color-correct them?

Well, I can still see a huge difference in this.

well I'm sorry but without the shots of the originals beside it, it looks the same to me... or that fact I haven't watched EoE this month yet... hmmm.

p.s. it looks brighter I'll say that.

Was it a loss of detail in Manga's conversion or was it simply a gain in resolution in the Renewal version? Or both?

Renewal has been digitally remastered, to make the image clearer, crisper, and more vivid. Mangle's was a crappy transfer from a less-than-ideal source. I'm sure that the image that people saw in theaters back when EoE was released was much better than Mangle's dismal DVD release.

after renewal, did the director's cut revamp that much of the series or was it mostly the added sections?

"After Renewal"? Renewal is the latest version of the show.

Platinum = domestic version of Renewal. It's not a new version of the show in its own right.

I see...
So they basically put it in new packaging and sold it to the US and other nations?

Actually, the packaging is refreshingly similar. They just modified the packaging of the Japanese individually-sold discs slightly.

And they added on additional features like commentaries (erk), Grant's Asuka collection, "The Mythology of Evangelion", and, of course, an English dub... But at least they were nice enough to add on the rush animation for various episodes included on the Renewal DVD Box-set bonus disc. Too bad they didn't throw in the rest of the crap on there; translated versions of "Genesis 0:0" and "Genesis 0:0'" would have been nice.

Esentially, Genesis 0:0 is a whole disk of DVD-Extras.

No, it was a clip show (with some interviews) that was released on VHS way back when, and included with the DVD-Box bonus disc later on (unremastered, of course). Genesis 0:0' is a similar deal, except it does have some cool new footage at the beginning that was eventually used in a D&R trailer (or was it the other way around?). C'mon, Biscuit, I gave you the movie file with all this crap in it, didn't I?

No way, dude/babe! That was the first thing that came to my mind the first time I saw it. Good that others thought so too 'cause I felt a little perverted.

Yes, you did, and all of it looked like the exact sort of thing that is usually presented as a DVD-Extra. Sorry if you don't think that's accurate.
