Kaoru Nagisa and Ode to Joy

How is the song Ode to Joy related to Kaoru Nagisa? When we first see him he is humming it out loud, then later when Shinji is waiting for him before they go to the shower together you hear the song again. Lastly when Kaoru takes over Unit 02 and heads towards Lillith the song is played again.

What does it mean?

The song is about destiny, finality. I don't know how else to put it.

Kaworu is a J3w.

He's the original Fiddler On The Roof.

Isn't the song coming from Shinji's casette player that time?

Yes, as strange as that seems, it's true. I'm watching episode 24 right now.

How does it seem strange? Shinji meets Kaworu and hears him humming ode to joy; Shinji likes Kaworu and Kaworu says that he likes Ode to Joy (sort of), so Shinji goes out and gets a tape of it.

That was actually Manga Entertainment's doing. He was originally listening to some generic J-pop song.

Huh, well I guess I never really thought of it that way. I was just thinking along the lines of, "Shinji doesn't seem like the kind of kid who would be into classical music." But that does make sense.

Freedom is the main theme of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and Kaworu is Tabris, the Angel of Free Will.

I don't think that "Tabris" is mentioned in the series itself, but it comes up in the lists of Angels from official sources. In the manga, however, Keel directly addresses Kaworu as 'Tabris'...

I just checked that scene out on Renewal vol. 7; Shinji is, in fact listening to the Fourth Movement of Beethoven's 9th (Ode to Joy) on his tape player. Also, ADV released the TV episodes, not Manga...

Ah, wrong scene, I was referring to a certain moment in Death and Rebirth.

Geez, you people are dense!

The simple answer is...Kaworu likes milk!

I mean, it's obvious! He was humming the "Drink milk, love life" jingle, which only sounds like "Ode to Joy".

Kaworu: *sitting on debris near the crater lake*

Drink milk, love life,

taste the freshness,

gives you more life en-ner-gy,

drink milk, love life,

drink milk, love life,

drink milk, love life,

driiiiink milk.

*Pauses*

I think that song is the high point of the Lilim culture, don't you agree?

Shinji:...

...no!
