MAL is only an indicator of US taste. Gurren Lagann movie 1 recieved a very limited theatrical release in Japan (which makes sense when you consider that it's a completely unnecessary edit of a very recent show), and I imagine the second will as well. Eva 1.0 debuted at #1 on the charts....

GL movie 2 will get a very (VERY) limited theatrical release and play only to otaku. It would be unwise to premiere it with GL if this is meant to be as big as Eva 01.

Another thing to take into account... Anno never intended on making the EoE movie. It was the original 26 episodes, and then because of the hate mails, he made EoE. The Kaworu part was suppose to be as short as the rest of the other angels. The idea might have been in Anno's head from the begin...

I like ambiguity and mystery and in some ways I wouldn't like to be told, but another side of me would desperately want to hear his answer.

I'd say it's a bit more than that though, given that you can see in Eva much of Anno's signature directorial style (based on his other works, like Shiki-Jitsu and Kare Kano) and little of the style of say, Tsurumaki.

It's also worth noting that Anno was sole director of 26'.
