That is outstanding work and a fascinating subject for an artist to tackle. I am glad they went with the revised designs though, they look to normal here. Asuka especially, she looks like Hikari in some ways. Interesting to think that perhaps both Hikari and Mari are elements of Asuka's personality that were split off and turned into independent characters. Mari was originally supposed to be a rival after all.

That's overthinking it really.

Esp. with Mari the idea/challenge make her sufficiently different & contrasting to both the OG girls (even though they were already designed to be as different as possible) & saying they wanted to avoid/ scrapped any ideas where she started sounding too much like one or the other since there would be no point in having her if she added nothing new/ just did stuff that already existing characters could do.

The only thing she has in common with OG Asuka is that she kicks ass at fighting which is a pretty broad description - she's not even good at fighting in the same way - Asuka is skilled & elegant, Mari is an adrenaline junkie.

& Hikari is like the token normal/average person then compared to the more "eccentric" pilots.

Though it's possible that they dropped the freckles 'cause they already had too many freckled ppl (not just Hikari but Kensuke too)

It does seem that wanting to make them all different & easily differentiable enough was definitely a concern (it's the whole reason Rei has blue hair)
