Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
I’ve never seen it either, but the terrible looking creative decisions really intrigue me. I can’t wait to experience this in a packed theater, seeing who reacts to what in which way and all that.
I actually kind of think that it’s a pity that Sonic got redesigned. Don’t get me wrong, he now looks better than I could have ever imagined, especially for a live-action movie. But the movie itself never looked all that good to begin with, so the better design makes it look like it will just be a normally bad movie instead of a mesmerizingly bad movie.

Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
I'm kind of a contrarian, when it comes to these things. Like I don't think that Cats movie, or even the OG Sonic looked that bad. Weird, for sure...but bad? Maybe it's because I have no nostalgia for these properties whatsoever (I've never even seen cats or a ghostbusters movie).
On the other hand I loved the Lionking as a child and was subsequently disgusted by the look of the new version. WHERE ARE THE COLORS AND THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS DISNEY.
So that checks out.
As for who decides that CGI needs to look "realistic" I don't know. It's like people are in charge who talk at length about the graphical fidelity of a game. Absolutely worthless. I for one am happy Visual Works exist, they do a tremendous job. Also, the new Lupin movie looks great. Japan might be late to CG, but they seem to understand that it's an art and not a technical discipline.

^ With Sonic, it was less “He doesn’t look like old Sonic,” and more “No child wants that nightmare fuel as a plush toy they’d sleep with.” I remember seeing that design for the first time and immediately watching 7 episodes of Excel Saga in a row just to cope with how crazily awful and unappealing that design looked.

Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
For me, the issue with the new Sonic trailer wasn't so much the redesign of the character, either way it's a blue hedgehog, it was the decision to change "Gangsta's Paradise" to "Blitzkrieg Bop" as the soundtrack hook. Of all the things the first trailer of Sonic got right, I think Coolio's rap brought an edge that the Ramones sadly is being brought in by every desperate film to back up the sound team.

"Gangstas Paradise" was an awful awful choice. Sonic is not supposed to be "edgy", he's supposed to be heroic, upbeat, and witty. You want "edgy", we have a hedgehog for that -- Shadow.
How about they make a movie where he and Knuckles team up? Double the edge and angst, and nobody is allowed to complain if there is rap everywhere. Coolio can voice Shadow and Snoop Dawg can be Knuckles. Go, Hollywood, Go!!

Speaking of which, do we know if Knuckles, Tails, or any of the other game characters besides Sonic and Robotnik are going to be in the movie?

The Hollywood Reporter's review of cats is upon us, gentlefolk. Mind-blowing quote from the article in the spoiler...
I literally cannot wait to see this film, I'm buying tickets right now.
SPOILER: Show
The Hollywood Reporter's review of Cats mentions, on top of the cat-human visual hybrids, "tiny mice with human faces" and "dancing cockroaches."
HOW???? HOW DID IT BECOME SO MUCH WORSE THAN BEFORE????????

Please tell me if it's a so bad its good vibe or if it's so bad it's bad as rotten is putting it around 17% (At the current time of this post) because its looking to be very bad all around. Que Judi Dench complaining and whining and blaming people that her big part got ignored or the didn't see it despite that she as in the theatre show years ago but bust her ankle and had to leave, while the others just walk it off and go on to better parts.

I posted my thoughts in the Recently Watched thread. Also, Judi Dench is apparently trying to score some attendance-boosting brownie points by saying that her character in the movie is trans, despite it not being textual or even subtextual anywhere in the film. This really isn't helping the film's situation out much, as most of the trans audience members are just rejecting the obvious and weak forced-word-of-mouth marketing stunt.

I wanna be surprised by Dench but sadly I'm not as she is, in reality, a declining A-lister she still hasn't figured it out yet. Also just because Kevin Spacey looked after her, after her husband died that does not mean he's a nice man and her defending this sexual predator made her look like an utter moron some years ago so her going for the LGBT play shows just how out of touch she is. Plus no ones going to fall for it because as you say it's not out there in the film and after the huge issues with young dumbledore in fantastic beasts audiences will be super wary now of creators using the LGBT card for pure tokenism purposes.

Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
Universal & Blumhouse are apparently teaming up to do a new The Thing movie adapting the original recently unearthed manuscript for the Who Goes There novel called Frozen Hell.
https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/360 ... nal-novel/
Carpenter's The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time and the best I have ever seen so I am not sure how to feel. Blumhouse's Halloween sequel was well received but their Black Christmas remake was awful from what I have heard, trailer had massive spoilers. Haven't seen either yet.
Kinda wish it was a sequel the 81 film, could have adapted the well received The Thing video game which Carpenter considers to be the official sequel.
My preferences for the film...
(1) Mainly use practical effects for the love of god, learn from the 2011 film which the producers fucked by demanding CGI completely cover over the practical effects they already filmed. Pricks. I say that as someone who liked the 2011 film.
(2) For director my ideal choices would be...
- Denis Villeneuve (blade runner 2049, sicario, arrival), probably will be too busy with his Dune adaptations.
- Cary Joji Fukunaga (true detective s1, beast of no nation)
- Johan Renck directing and Craig Mazin writing (they did hbo's phenomenal Chernobyl series)

Candyman (2020) with Jordan Peele (get out, us) producing.
Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlwzuZ9kOQU
Looks really good to me.
Vanessa Williams is returning from the original as Anne-Marie McCoy the woman whose baby Anthony was kidnapped and that Helen had to rescue (she is the woman in the trailer going "don't say that")
The lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (black manta in aquaman) is playing Anthony as a adult.

Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
Regal closed all their locations across the US to fight Coronavirus.
Landmark Theaters, Harkins, the Alamo Drafthouse, Showcase Cinemas, and BowTie Cinemas soon followed.
AMC just announced they're closing all their locations for 6 to 12 weeks to fight Coronavirus. 12 weeks from now is mid-June.
With those two signing out every other theatrical company is soon to follow.
Theaters are dark for the next two months minimum.
It's for the right reasons so while I'm worried what this means for the future of theatrical distribution and experiences it's more important to protect the health of everyone.
Movie theaters will be back. And it may take a while for people to start going back to them, but they will be back.
This also means EVERYTHING on the calendar for the next two to three years will be subject to massive changes since not only can studios not release new films** but they also can't shoot anything either. A lot of the big releases for next year were either in production or about to begin production and they will now be months behind schedule. These are strange times and everything is being affected by this awful sickness.
**Universal is releasing some of their lower budget films like The Invisible Man 2020 & The Hunt on special time-restricted VOD releases this Friday - for $20 you get the movie for 48 hours - & they'll be releasing Trolls 2 on VOD on April 10, the movie's set theatrical release date, BUT they intentionally delayed Fast Nine a full year to guarantee a theatrical release so they're not giving up on theaters but the cat is out of the bag. I imagine some of the other movies that were in theaters will get special early VOD releases and a few of the smaller movies that were supposed to come out in April & May like Saint Maud or Promising Young Woman but don't expect the blockbusters to be released on streaming.
Odd times.

Yeah. I had like five things I had planned to see in the next month.
Things are messed up right now. But the world will get through it.

I'm totally against this as I think carpenters original is perfect and one thing horror movies do now is they reveal monsters to quickly whereas Carpenters has this build-up where the dog they save is acting weird and no one knew what as going on leading to deep tensions.
The issues brought up with Black Christmas was it was a lazy retread which didn't modernise the characters in any way or understand the whole tension of a murderer hiding in your uni house with a dash of really unsavoury old type sexism while trying to balance this with feminism and the two don't mix well due to bad storytelling. https://screenrant.com/black-christmas-2019-movie-reviews-bad-reason/

I guess I'm just out the money spent on Digimon tickets. It's a shame that it might be a while before I get to see that one.

Universal has a new aquatic monster movie coming up called Don't go in the Water to be directed by one of the directors from the well received Watchmen TV series.
https://www.comicbookmovie.com/monsters ... er-a174264
Strongly intrigued.
It being Universal the film could possibly be related to Creature from the Black Lagoon or Jaws although looking back through a older article that seems less likely as the script was purchased by Universal from a outside source.
Bosch - Season 6 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTGPN0Ugt8A
Billions - Season 5 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh1sTYIJoyQ
Big fan of both these series. Entirely caught up on Bosch but behind on Billions.
Inheritance trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q7JOLZxjqY
Cute AF Lily Collins with Simon Pegg playing a Hannibal Lecter-y role. Nice.
Artemis Fowl full trailer finally after a entire year since the original teaser.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl2r3Fwxz_o
It's been announced that It will be going straight to Disney+.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels full trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WqFMwMiF3I
Haven't seen the original Penny Dreadful series, this has me intrigued with Dormer and the late 30s LA detective noir setting.
Greyhound trailer with Tom Hanks

Ozark - Season 3 trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNDTOy5bU_4
The Undoing (nicole kidman + donald sutherland) teaser - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG1ZQERAlGQ
Legendary Pictures will be doing ANOTHER reboot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (for god's sake)
Will be directed by Ryan and Andy Tohill.
Will be produced by Fede Alvarez, who is known for directing 2013's Evil Dead remake as well as 2016's Don't Breathe.
Written by Chris Thomas Devlin.
Hope they don't dwell on or show leatherface's backstory again, we have gotten more then enough of that from the 2006 and 2017 films.
