^ADV always seemed at their best when doing comedy dubs.
We’ve reached the 3rd/4th episode week of the current season. That means
Tines test results are in:
AHO-GIRL. Yoshiko manages to amuse me despite her loudness and annoying behaviour, maybe it’s the 12 minute run time of 4 skits per episode that keeps her tomfoolery from overstaying its welcome.
Unlike some respectable individuals such as
Alaska Slim, I have no qualms laughing at comic misogyny.
Result: Pass
In Another World With My Smartphone. Oh joy, yet another one of those
reborn in a fantasy world shows.
Bland world, bland character design, bland costume design, passable animation only, no surprises or USPs whatsoever. I can’t help but feel suspicious of this one, it’s so uninspired and by-the-numbers it’s hard to believe.
Not a good idea having the wizard-girl cast “Explosion” magic in the third episode. Just reminds me I could be watching a certain other, much better show.
Result: Fail.
Restaurant to Another World. Thankfully- this isn’t another
reborn in a fantasy world show; just a feel-good yarn featuring odd characters stumbling into a restaurant, eating cartoon food and feeling better for having done so.
Pointless, but soothing.
Result: Pass.
Tsuredure Children. 4 episodes in and no blood chocolates yet… not that I understand what that even is.
Another 12-minute show consisting of 4 vignettes per episode; 3 minutes or so is spent on one pair’s awkward little no/romance, then switches to a completely different pair for more of the same, but different.
The short segments mean I haven’t yet been able to memorise any names besides “The couple with the delinquent” or “The couple with the oblivious girl”, which is normally a very bad sign- especially for romantic comedies; but the show does give us a decent little mix of everything each episode; we taste one flavour then move on to the next. Occasionally charming and funny. It works.
Result: Pass.
A Centaur’s Life/ Centaur’s Worries. Can’t look at this show without thinking of the other recent monster girl shows like:
Monster Musume (guilty pleasure),
Interviews with Monster Girls (innocent pleasure) and
My Monster Secret (punishment).
This one leans closest to
Interviews the most, but not by a great amount. Characters walk around with wings, horns or the torso of a horse and that’s just normal in this world. Fine, but does it lead to any interesting conversations and amusing situations you can only accomplish with these sorts of colourful characters?
Sadly, no. Not within the first three episodes, anyway.
The greatest use of a Centaur’s unique perspective on life so far has been a brief discussion on personal sanitation. Lovely.
Merfolk wear underpants in this world, because they have a gap between their crotch and tail. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen since
Asobi ni Ikuyo’s 4 ears.
Result: Fail.
Classroom of the Elite. The characters are hardly fresh; there are plenty of nonchalant /sarcastic male protagonists as well as haughty, loner girls in school dramas like these; but something about Ayanokoji’s half-open eyes tickles me, and maybe I’m just a sucker for the arrogant, unsocial girl gradually opens up over time arc that Suzune is bound to go through.
A little character secret was exposed at the end of episode 3 a lot of people in the comment section claim to have seen coming a mile away. I can honestly say that I didn’t, and I’m glad, because that just made it all the more hilarious.
Giving this one a chance.
Result: Pass.
Gamers. It’s got a blue-eyed pinky in it. I like those.
Result: Pass.
My First Girlfriend is a Gal. An utterly horrendous first episode, offering me no reason whatsoever to root for the male lead or give any clues to what exactly Yukana is thinking. The censorship was a bizarre highlight.
Odd observation,-but this show does fading-to-black too often, and badly.
Want a pleasant toon featuring Gyaru? See
Tell me Galko-Chan.
Result: Fail.
Teekyu is back, and it’s about to hit 100 episodes. All’s right with the world.
Result: Pass. Obviously.
