Had EVA 03 not been destroyed:

Toji has a short tough time getting used to piloting a thing that hurt his sister. But then she goes "Wow cool!"

Then for the next several months Toji brags about it and dangles his piloting skills over Kensuke's head.
Then Anno would have him accidentally step on Hikari and his head explodes.

End of Story..

....wow, that was really stupid.
