Manga Recommendations.

^ I'm a fan of Rumiko Takahashi so pre-ordered the first volume when it was released, but found it to be (so far) a less entertaining Bleach. I've ordered the second volume too so I'll have to see If it improves...
I'd recommend the original Ghost in the Shell manga too, I actually enjoyed it more than the films and TV series (and I really like them). Mainly due to the comedy elements that are absent in the other versions plus I really like the art style and all the notes and explanations Masamune Shirow adds in the borders of the manga.
Gantz is one of my favourite manga series ever, I'd recommend it to anyone that likes Battle Royale (the manga, movie or novel). Violent, adult and very gripping, action packed and entertaining.
Another of my favourites is Negima, I just find it continually enjoyable, it's got action, comedy, drama and loads of really entertaining unique characters. The amount of detail that goes into the series even makes it worth re-reading as well.
Death Note was one of my favourite series of recent years (Code Geass topped it) but I'd have to say the anime for me was more enjoyable than the manga, story and content are almost identical but I much preferred it with voice acting and the amazing soundtrack.

It's GENDO~
Okay, maybe it's supposed to be a given or something (since I haven't seen a single person mention it) but READ THE NEON GENESIS EVANGELION MANGA!
The art is phenomenal, the story and characters (changed slightly from the TV series)) are great, and all in all I'd say it's the best telling of NGE out of any of the three sources (I know that doesn't make it canon, so you don't need to tell me =P).
Also, a few people mentioned Akira, which I highly recommend. Color versions are out there, so get them if you can. I tried reading Yotsubato!, but it just gets stale after a while (I'm up to Chapter 30 or so). Don't get me wrong; it's funny, and the art is great when it wants to be (buildings, vehicles, landscapes, pretty much anything besides the characters), but...it just stops being anything special after a while.

I have a couple of titles to recommend sifted from the noise and froth since last time I posted --
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku : the latest in the list of crazy-awesome mah-jongg titles out of Japan, escalating from Junichiro Koizumi vs Kim Jong Il, through to, currently, the Pope vs Hitler as world leaders battle at the table against the Moon Nazis of the Fourth Reich.
Franken Fran : Fran is a cute girl with exotic surgical skills, which is just as well, since she herself is the master creation of a renowned Japanese biochemist. She is kind, hard working, and makes herself many friends. And she just likes to use her talents to help people as very best she can, even if people don't always show the sort of gratitude she should expect.

KAZE NO TANI NO NAUSHIKA (NAUSICAA): Obviously I'm talking about the manga version here; the movie was great and all but the manga is like ten times (or however much longer the manga is than the anime) better than the movie. The characters are way better developed and the whole thing is just way more badass. Miyazaki did a really good job. Is he still working on anything btw?
EDIT: COROLLARY TO THE INITIAL REVIEW: I confess that the above paragraph was written only upon reading the first volume, and I am sorry to say that the rest of the Nausicaa manga No, just kidding. It was awesome. Like, in-many-ways-better-than-all-of-Miyazaki's-films awesome. I especially liked how it got totally beyond the childishness that sort of permeates the films, and that a lot of ideas and themes that were in other movies (like the indestructible steel blocks of Laputa, to name a minor example) appeared in the later volumes of the manga. I really liked Nausicaa's struggle with the spirits and the whole "garden" thing near the end, where they figured out the origins of the Sea of Corruption.
In closing, since it's probably pretty well known that anything Miyazaki makes is decent, I will make a single complaint, and that is that I lament the manga having not been made into an animated work in it's entirety. It would have most certainly been one of the best series of all time.

I'm currently addicted to Ginga Nagareboshi Gin manga. They started publishing it here! I used to watch the anime when I was 8 (I didn't know what anime was back the..) so GNG has nostalgic value to me.
I'd rec it to anyone but smallest kids (because of the violence). It's a good story.

I recommend the Gunslinger Girl manga.
For no reason in particular. I decided to try it after the anime, and I think it's very good.

Asuka's not a bitch, she just denies her innocence in a bitchy way.

Welcome to the N.H.K.!
Better than the anime(so far).
I just went to a local A&M store and bought the first two volumes(Carlsen Comics/German).
They were both welded in plastic (Like porn, so minors can´t flip through the pages and shit) so I was pretty confused because the anime didn´t have any excessive nudity and stuff like that.
After unpacking the most impractial packaging ever, I noticed.
The manga was different.
Umm...
(STEER AWAY IF DRAWN NAKED MINORS ARE DEFINETLY TABOO TO YOU AND YOUR COMMUNITY.)
(Is child porn legal in Japan or something?)
Welcome to the NHK! revolves around a college dropout who is also a hikkikomori(social recluse).
One day he meets a girl who wants to "cure" him from his hikkikomori ways.
All in all, it´s a hilarious and brilliant blend between black comedy and cold reality without being too depressing.
(From the anime.)
Recommendable.

This post contains Shinji's ass and trace amounts of nuts.
Damn, it was just getting good.
Anyway, I'm going to recommend Planetes and if someone already recommended it on this board I don't care and I'm recommending it again. It's realistic sci-fi that focuses entirely on the characters rather than the science/technology. I found it kind of unnecessarily pessimistic in a few places, but I'd definately recommend it to anyone who likes Eva. It's short, too; only about four or five volumes long.

I preferred the manga -- it doesn't have all the frivolous stuff added to the anime, gives you more backstory for the characters, and while he's a bit of a jerk, Hachi is nowhere the enormous dick that he ends up as in the anime.

Talk about derivative story concepts: Cynthia: The Mission is one part Black Lagoon and one part shonen tournament fightan. The "twist" is that the main character is a cute loli and the story takes place in a typical derpy moeblob-infested high school setting. Wow. Jesus, Japan, are you trying to create the most unoriginal, otaku-baiting cliche storm sinc-
