Yeah, dunno if Ornette recommends as hard as I do. I think i'll be pushing this for a while. <_>
He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a man. There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery. Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the Muad'Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies' skins, the Muad'Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: "I am the Kwisatz Haderach. That is reason enough."

these were amazing. how Kenshin came to aquire the scar, all the terrible things he did as a man slayer, how he is still able to love, how BAD ASS his sensei is...it should be REQUIRED viewing for all.
(oh, and Trigger's Elysium, the best game ever made is super smash bros. for the 64...epic)

ok, time to bump this thread.
I just finished this relatively obscure slice of life series from 2006 and I'm fairly impressed. Having experience in the difference between a mere "someone who serves drinks" as opposed to a true "mixologist", I can relate to a lot of what this show is about. So for anyone who likes slice of life with a bit of drama, I recommend:
Bartender
Here's a pretty good review written by AnomalousOne on MAL:
It's a similar show to Shinigami no Ballad, where each episode deals with a particular story, and is resolved through interaction with the protagonist (Ryu Sasakura). There's also quite a bit of info about different kinds of cocktails and alcohol mixed in that's pretty interesting as well.

Bartender
Here's a pretty good review written by AnomalousOne on MAL:
“In happy times, one cocktail is enough, because anything you drink will taste good. But if there are a hundred shapes of unhappiness, I want to be a bartender who will make a hundred cocktails to soothe unhappiness.”
An anime series about a bartender at work might not sound like anything worth paying attention to, but Bartender is a calm, gentle series that might be just what you need. Each episode covers the stories of customers that go into a bar to soothe their sou...ls. Bartender Ryu Sasakura assists them with their problems by making them a cocktail with a history or taste that relates to the customer’s situation. By coming to terms with themselves through their drink, each customer can leave the bar satisfied. Each story is expanded upon not only by what the customer reveals but by narration, often by others that have also been healed by the bar. Each individual story is well-developed, detailed, and brought to a satisfying end. However, there is no plot carried across the full show.
Much of the animation style is abstract, using many unrealistic background effects, quite a few of which are theatrical. For example, a character may be having a conversation at the bar counter, then the scene will cut to a narrator elaborating on what is happening, perhaps in a spotlight or even simply living their own lives. It may not seem realistic, but it’s pulled off quite well. While it may seem that it would be difficult or boring to follow a show narrated like this, it never is thanks to the animation that makes it clear what is happening in reality and what is abstract.
While the background music doesn’t stand out in any particular situation, it also helps to create the atmosphere. The opening song provides a good introduction, and the ending is slow and simple, yet effective.
The characters in each story are very believable. Instead of crazy characters made for the viewer’s excitement, they are developed to be believable people. In addition to each episodic character, the bartender himself is presented very well. Although at first he is the idealized “Glass of the Gods,” the man who can always make the perfect cocktail for a customer, his past is also addressed. By the end of the series, he has become a three-dimensional character with his own history and shortcomings.
Bartender’s true strengths lie not in the technical aspects, but the atmosphere. It’s an incredibly relaxing show and does a great job doing exactly what the creators felt a bar should do: soothe the customers. Watching an episode is a great way to calm down after a bad day; you can sit back and enjoy without shutting down your brain. A word of warning, it’s not as enjoyable in large quantities, save it for when you need it.
Bartender doesn’t try to be big or exciting, but instead appeals to people who want to relax while learning a little bit about alcohol and life. It’s a lovely little series that brings emotion and realism in a way that other, flashier shows can’t achieve.

Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho
Anybody ever seen this anime ??? I watched the first 4 episodes a few months ago and just remembered it. Basically its about a school swimming team and more specifically their coach a guy who is afraid of water and his meeting of a really weird but hot transfer student ( who also joins the swimming team as luck would have it. The entire team is all girls except like 4 guys and the creators used this to basically make it into a 20 minute long piece of fanservice.
Its a funny watch so i suggest you go and find some lol.

I've seen the Umisho series. It's only okay. It needs a lot more than just fanservice to make it recommendable.
What I have seen of Bartender (3eps) so far seems good though.
The anime I am going to recomend here is Aria. It is a very slow moving and relaxing slice of life anime. It's a great anime to watch after a hectic day.
AniDB has a good description of it.
The wiki page for it has a good description as well if you want to know more, but it does contain some spoilers so I am not going to link to it.

FAKE.
For all you yaoi fans.
The story is a 1 episode OVA about two New York police officers. One, Dee, is a homosexual and wants to be with his partner Randy whom he calls Ryu, his Japanese name. Ryu, who isn't against homosexuality, believes Dee to be attractive the first time he meets him but has yet to return all his partner's feelings. The two of them travel to England for their vacation where Dee is sure that he can FINALLY bed Ryu without any annoying people to interrupt them. They stay at the small, quiet hotel about 5 miles from any large town... the perfect place for a week alone. But, a mystery begins when, while out on the lake, Ryu discovers a dead body. As more and more strange things occur, the history of the small hotel is revealed to Dee, while out buying groceries. Turns out that any time a Japanese blooded person stays at the hotel they turn up dead.
Is Ryu is trouble? Will Dee be able to prevent any harm from happening to him?
:O! Watch it to find out! :P

I recently finished watching deathnote, and while being completely fucking super awesome, it doesn't hold a candle to NGE.
God, Apparently you all have been discussing Q since November. Catching up on the discussion is harrowing.

if you're up for it, Cat Soup is an amazing short film. a surreal black comedy about life and death...or something like that.
cast of cats (a la chiyo's dad), bizarre humanoids, death, god, no comprehensible dialogue, etc. won some kind of award for being trippy.
i first saw it at about 2 am at katsucon. yeah.
and, hey, it's like 30 minutes. hell, you could probably finish it on the metro.
but be wary, Cat Soup is not for the faint of heart.

Also Nekojiru Gekijou, I think most of the episodes are on youtube. Warning, they hate pigs.
yeah, seen most of these (on youtube). they're awesome--especially if you're really tired and your guard's totally down. more humor driven than the film, which was more straight-up surrealism. ...but then of course everyone enjoys a good surrealist laugh every now and then.
and yeah, they've got it out for the pigs.

Well here is my latest recommendation and it is one of the best anime I've seen since Eva. I present Zambot 3
The story is your basic super giant robot archetype, mysterious invading force comes to earth to try to kill all humans, a civilization that was killed by these invaders, migrated to earth 200 years before and set up a giant robot that has a chance of beating these invaders.
Where it differs from the typical formula is where it shines, first of all the people of Japan feel that the good guys (the jin family) are causing the invaders to come down to earth and thus hate them for causing all this damage to their homes and the deaths of the families. This is shown from refusing to give them supplies to even pelting one of the pilots with stones. Another difference is that you really feel the pain and terror the civilians feel, you see missed and avoided attacks kill the civilians, destroy their houses and the like.
The series gets much more intense as it goes on, with the last 2 episodes simply being masterpieces, asking one of the most important questions that can be asked in any show that has a single or small groups of heroes defending the world. Though that questions a bit of a spoiler so you will have to see for your self.

This is a review of BLUE DROP because it needs to be mentioned here. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but my interest in Blue Drop began with the Tenant of Room 404.
In Blue Drop, earth is invaded and conquered by the Arume, an all female race of humanoids. The anime takes place in 1999, right before the invasion. It focuses on Wakatake Mari, the sole survivor of a mysterious accident. Five years after losing her memory, Mari transfers to an all-girls academy, her first experience in a real "school" setting. There she meets Senkouji Hagino, a fellow student at the academy. It is quickly revealed to the viewer that Hagino is actually Commander Ekaril, captain of the Arume warship Blue, and that the accident Mari somehow survived was actually the disastrous first contact between the Arume and humanity. The series focuses on the relationship between Mari and Ekaril juxtaposed against the looming Arume invasion.
Overall I enjoyed Blue Drop. The animation is consistently good, I like the way the characters are drawn, and all of the characters are likable and interesting in their own way. It probably comes down to personal preference, but I found the Arume side of the story to be a bit more interesting, and the daily troubles of Mari's classmates a bit mundane. The music was good, I like the opening theme.
One of the series' assets is its length. It is short, only 13 episodes, so its great if you want to see a good show and get a bit more background for reading the Tenant. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10. However, if all you're looking for is a serious and awesome yuri anime, I would recommend Simoun first.

I really liked the school side of the story -- while I called it "Marimite with spaceships" when I reviewed Blue Drop, that side is less austere than Marimite. Simoun OTOH is an anime that just outright messes with your sexuality (stupid sexy Wapourif...)
