I have the original Japanese, as well as the original issue based comic books style release, as well as the first and second edition versions, standard editions, and collectors editions. The Evangelion manga has never been censored.
It was originally available in a flopped version with English Sound Effects, as was the common practice, however those editions are no longer reasonably available.
Interestingly, the Evangelion manga has the distinction of being the first manga in America to be sold in its original orientation with Japanese sound effects, largely at Sadamoto's insistence.

I thought showing uncensored genitalia was illegal in Japan...

They have laws about obscenity, which is really weird. I don't understand why it should be such a big deal to show pubic hair and genitalia in porn. It boggles the mind how porn about rape or lolicon is okay, so long as nobody's naughty bits are shown in detail. Japan is freaking weird.

There was a relaxation recently and (pubic) hair shots were green-lighted. Not that anime/manga characters ever have body hair -- they just have pixellations (animation) or odd narrow black bars (print).LiLi wrote:In my understanding...

Or strategically placed beams of light/shadows/cans...
My friends and I used to refer to any such sort of censorship on intimate parts as "Japanese censorship"...

I've seen plenty of manga that don't bother to censor nipples, although in mostly unerotic context (bath house, etc), on the other hand the majority utilise 'Anime Anatomy'
On actual H works, it can get wierd...in animation you normally get a white/black silhouette, although i've never seen nipples censored...in printed works, sometimes you get this horrifying mass of pixels, other times you get this neat little black bar that doesn't actually conceal anything, and at a glance makes it seem like the characters have been branded with a barcode...

I have scans of the first two or three vols that way, and my high-school library has the first volume in both versions. Goddamn looking at the ads in the flipped one made me nostalgia.

Mmm, I managed to get a couple vols of the flopped version at a comics shop, but the rest I had to dig up on Amazon, and said digging in some cases required use of a jackhammer >.<

I think the DBZ manga has that title. or maybe it was pokemon. I know I wound up with a renegade right-to-left comic sometime before I started buying Eva through viz.
