Oh god, if 4kids got the chance to do the dub, Eva would be a completely different show altogether...and for some odd reason, half of me wants to see what kind of monster that would end up as. Probably due to how it would basically be Evangelion Abridged and I might actually like it OTL

You may be surprised to know that not everyone agrees with this... (also that much of the supposed evidence relies on the ADV translation rather than the Japanese original).

I also don't understand myself why Karwou saying he likes Shinji rather than use the word love undermines the whole relationship. They have like three minutes of screen time by that point, saying he loved him just made it sound laughable. Like came off as more authentic to me.

bobgoesw00t wrote:If GKIDS is smart, they'll try to have both the original dub and the Netflix version. Regardless of if it ends up having both, the ONLY thing that needs to happen is that they DON'T use the new translation of the kawoshin bath scene because that was a load of bullshit IMO. Considering how basically ANYONE who's heard of Evangelion knows that kawoshin is 100% without a doubt completely canon. The new translation got rid of that completely and I can tell you now if they stick with that version, the fans are gonna lose their shit again.
That is just plainly, and objectively wrong. The original Japanese version uses a word that is highly ambiguous and doesn't cleanly map to any English word, with the implied meaning being closer to friendship than to love.
You know who won't lose their shit if they keep the new translation? Roughly 90% of the domestic audience, who called western fans a bunch of whiny little bitches when that pathetic excuse of a social media outrage started

My dudes and dudettes, NGE has a scene where Kaworu and Shinji are bathing together, and Shinji has the bashful anime blush face on the entire time. That scene is hella gay, and that's okay. While I agree that translations should be as accurate to the letter/spirit of the original text as possible, errors or missteps in that regard don't really make a scene like that read as "less gay." It would take the entire team at 4k!ds to slap swim trunks on Shinji and Kaworu and remove the anime blush entirely before the gayness could be erased from that scene.

That's basically what I was trying to get at, there's nothing about the script changes that make it any less homoerotic. The idea that Khara was engaging in queer erasure seems off base. If it was anything, it was the fact that western audiences laughed at the "gay" scenes in 3.0 that probably got the Khara crew wanting to tone it down.

Re: GKids releasing NGE Blu-Ray in North America June 2021
People sometimes forget that the Anime is from the 90s Japan, though I suspect that despite being part of a, in many respects repressed and narrow society, Anno doesn't really seem to care about the petty labelling of "love" in a political sense. Anno chose to portray the unreality of unconditional love with Kaworu, based on an encounter with the most-probably gay Ikuhara Kunihiko. So I think it's both and nothing, it's transcendently gay in a platonic way. It also plays with Anime tropes and societal expectations at the same time. It's nuanced and complex; it's Metamodern to the core, it's what makes Evangelion so endlessly fascinating and interesting. As in how to translate it? If it's vague and cryptic, keep it that way. Try translating intent, I'd say.

thank you for putting into words what I couldn't. As others have also pointed out, a single line of dialogue does not change any of the undertones, and that is a good thing; the problem with the old translation is the insistence of the word "love", something that has extremely big meaning in Eva, and using that term takes away from the overarching message that Shinji is a confused teenager struggling with himself and his emotions; by presenting an "easy way out" like this, all that nuance is compressed into a flat character with all the grace and precision of a steam roller.

Really exciting news, finally. Hopefully Madman will pick up the Australian release for this. Been waiting years to get NGE on Blu-ray replete with both subs and dub.

The title for this thread is still wrong. There is zero confirmation this is a June release.

Re: GKids releasing NGE Blu-Ray in North America June 2021
I'm really excited about this. People outside Japan haven't gotten an official home media release of this series for over a decade, so this will be a great way to remedy that. I would prefer if they include both the original English dub and the new version, but from what I understand Khara considers the original dub to be an old shame, so that's probably not gonna happen.
On the subject of Kaworu's lines towards Shinji, I don't really care about that. I can understand the argument for the "like" translation retaining ambiguity, but at the same time Japan is much more sexually conservative than other countries, so "love" could be a way to translate that line in a way that makes sense in English. That scene is hella gay either way though, so it doesn't really matter to me.

I had just spent a good chunk of money on the Archives DVD box while also giving the Japanese DVD release of 1.01 some funny looks. Looks like this is going to take priority.
Please just call me Ian, "TheFrisky" is more of a title.

I laughed WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too hard when you mentioned 4Kids having to edit swim trunks on the boyfriends and removing Shinji's blushy blush to make the scene no homo xD

Kids these days growing up on Netflix Eva have no clue how many people thought they had dodged a bullet not having 4k!ds adapt Evangelion into something else entirely. (In retrospect, 4k!ds would have never even gone near the property to begin with.)

Re: GKids releasing NGE Blu-Ray in North America 2021
I hope that GKids releases the "Ultimate Edition" of NGE - whatever that includes - at the same time as the Regular Edition and they don't stagger them.
GKids is double dipping with Weathering With You having released a standard Blu-ray release last month but have a super-duper 4 Disc Collector's Edition complete with a 4K UHD release of the film (that's what I'm holding for) set for next month. I'm usually pretty good at avoiding double dipping but with Eva that might be difficult.
Maybe the Ultimate Edition will include ALL the special features from the initial 10-Disc Japanese BD release. That blue box sits and looks lovely on my shelf but I haven't really dug through the extras on it.
**Mind you, I don't think there will be a 4K release of Eva. At least not before Japan gets one.**
PS. Anyone think GKids is gonna acquire the Rebuilds? I looked at the Funimation site and they're not selling any release of 1.0 on disc anymore. They could just be out of stock at the moment OR their access to the rights expired.

Re: GKids releasing NGE Blu-Ray in North America 2021
I mean, they've done Steelbook Editions of some of the movies they've released. Honestly, I really don't know how they'll handle a TV series. They've never done one of those under the GKids banner before. (GKids is a label under Shout! Factory, and they've released American TV shows on DVD before. Maybe it's match closely with that?) Honestly, GKids has been really good at getting all of the original Japanese special features in their North American releases, so I am actually hoping that stays consistent with NGE. I would imagine that a 10-disc set full of special features is unreasonable to sustain over a long period of time, so I would expect a limited release of the "Ultimate Edition" would be how they maintain their consistency of having all of the Japanese special features while also having a more sustainable market strategy in the longer-term Regular Edition that isn't so niche.

Re: GKids releasing NGE Blu-Ray in North America 2021
Another testament of the absurd lenght it took for those films to be completed...
On the other hand, do you think they'll include everything? I mean, they mention Death, but not Rebirth... I know it's nitpicking but I kinda like Rebirth

Re: GKids releasing NGE Blu-Ray in North America 2021
Rebirth won't be a part. It was only Death that was released on Netflix too, for that matter.
I guess there's just a thought that since Rebirth is basically the first 24 minutes of EoE in a slightly different state, there's no point in specifically adding that too. Death, as a decidedly non-linear recap film with animation not seen anywhere else, is probably more of a ''required object'' for the full Eva experience. I would like to see Rebirth, since it'd be interesting to see it how it differs from the corresponding EoE events, but Khara obviously doesn't consider it as important as Death.
