Discussions of meanings of symbolism.

I know that this is probably asking for bad news, but lets discuss the symbolism of various things in Evangelion. When I say symbols, I mean the esoteric religious references. Let me say before we start, I know that half of them don't really mean anything (glares at giant cross explosions). And I also know that they aren't the true explanation for everything in canon. For example, the Spear of Longinus is not really the spear used to kill our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and can allegedly "gut the soul" (whatever that means), but rather refers to the fact it is a divine weapon that can pierce AT Fields (i.e. gut the soul) and kill anything. That being said...DISCUSS!
