Agent is correct. Although I prefer keyboard and mouse a game pad is very tempting for 14. Having a keyboard for chat is extremely useful. I just wish they had an in game voice chat system. That would trump text chat.

I was considering getting Guild Wars 2, but from all the great things I have heard about FFXIV ARR I think I'll get it. I've always wanted to play a fantasy RPG that wasn't World of Warcraft (I have never played WOW and never want to). I wonder if it's on Steam...

Well, I downloaded the character creator, damn it is good!

Is it a "buy once, play forever" game or a "Monthly subscription" game?

If it helps your decision at all, it's the only subscription game that I've actually gotten hooked on. Maybe it's because I already had Guild Wars, but I just couldn't get into WoW. Had FF XI for about a month, but I never really got into it, possibly because I didn't have a controller and the schema was awkward on keyboard.

I checked the fees and they seem pretty reasonable. I think I'll give it a go! Now I just need to get it...

A few questions as to what I should do...

1: Would playing a female character (me being male and all) be creepy?
2: What sort of weapons/classes/skills are there? I know there's the 5 races (human, elf-equivalent, adorable chibi things, cat people, burly titans) but I know very little about gameplay. I quite fancy myself wielding a zweihander/greatsword thingy as a tank/damage monster class.

2. Sorry no Zweihanders... you have greataxes or longswords and shields though.
THe classes are
Gladiator: Sword/shield/ tank.
Marauder: Greataxe/Tank
Lancer: Spear/DPS
Archer: bow/DPS
Pugilist: Fist weapons/DPS
Thaumaturgist: Cudgles/staffs/ DPS
Arcanist: Grimoires/DPS (Has two job upgrades one of which is healer type)
Conjurer: Staves/Wands/Healer.

Gladiator sounds fun, as does Marauder. I'm a bit of a Leeroy Jenkins when it comes down to it. I'm not too bothered about speed or fancy magic, just dealing huge damage and soaking up return attacks so the rest of the party can go unmolested. My ideal strategy/teamup would be a healing character supporting an dbuffing me whilst I go for the more dangerous foes, cutting them down and drawing their attention away from me. Think Heavy/Medic combo, except in Final Fantasy and with magic and swords rather than mediguns and miniguns. I'll do my best to support the team, just don't expect master strategy.

On the sliding scale of fantasy versus sci-fi, is it closer to the fantasy end (FFVI and before, mostly steampunk stuff with less technology) or the sci-fi end (FFVII, FFXIII, etc, with the more outlandish weapons like Buster Swords and Gunblades, android war constructs powered by Mako, etc)?

Funny you should ask... definetly more on the idea of Fantasy... 'cept for the Garlean empire who're all magitek and gunweapon hybrids and such. So it's got a nice blend of the two.

Yeah, Cerberus has been full on and off for awhile now. Hopefully once they do bring in server transfers that problem will be alleviated.

I'm not sure if no headphones will be a problem or not. Only time I have done voice chat via Skype for an MMO I used my gaming headset (Which I have to replace now ) and then it was only once so I'm not that experienced with that at all.

But seriously, you (as a guy) don't realize just how creepy skirts can be until you've really RP'd a female character (and subsequently told you were a dirty little thing by a creeper looking up your skirt whilst riding a Chocobo). I mean, don't get me wrong, it probably wouldn't be bad if the skirts were longer. I've been told skirts can be really comfortable. But miniskirts... just no.

I'm playing a Hyur named Kantha Abraxas, as a Gladiator. So far, this game is awesome. I shall definitely be playing this a lot!

Just a heads up to you guys, but if you have been gathering and see people teleporting to the gathering points or in a lot of cases now teleporting into them or under them they are bots.

Myself as well as Agent and Doctor Memory have seen this a lot as of late, and we report them for it. Not sure if it really does any good to do so, but hopefully it does. The last thing I want to see is the player driven economy get messed up because of people botting.

Seeing as my FC is the only entity at this time that can probably afford housing, that's good

I ended up cleaning myself out buying Materia and a Grimoire for my relic weapon. Good lord, that stuff is bloody expensive. Glad I managed to catch the Quicktongue III when it was down 30k, else I wouldn't have been able to afford the book either.
