Very strangely it is related. The experimentnts Hojo does and other things are inspired by evangelion. I don't quite remember what all it is but I'll look it up again. Apparrently the story to DoC is comletely inspired by instrumentality.

I didn't quite see the similarity in the old FFVII, and I don't understand what's going on in DoC.

All I know is that Dio at the Gold Saucer has D-Type equipment on display

Go click on it and I'm pretty sure it even says so right out.

Final Fantasy VII

I've copied the conversation spawned from another thread not about VII so everyone can freely discuss it here.

Kaysow wrote:Yeah, that's it. It's total bullshit. Sephiroth was TOSSED into Lifestream by Cloud, he didn't fucking jump in willingly.

AuthenticM wrote:Did Advent Children state that he jumped in of his own will? I don't recall hearing anything of the sort. Cloud and Sephiroth don't even talk of their past confrontation.

Cloud tossed Sephiroth in the lifestream. True. But does that mean Sephiroth has ultimately failed for good? No. If he can think of another plan, he'll put it to execution. That's what we see in Advent Children. Between the end of FFVII and the beginning of Advent, while Sephiroth was 'roaming' the Lifestream, he thought of another plan: "What if I contaminated the Lifestream in order to control Terra from within her? I could then roam the universe until I find the perfect planet onwhich to build a shining paradise." That's the gist of it. There was no retcon at all in Advent.

The only 'retconning' I can think of, is that they integrated Vincent and Yuffie as main characters, when in the game they were optional characters. But I didn't understand why they put them optional in the first place.

The Bastard King wrote:He was making a reference to the "Last Order" segment, which does a bit of a job with the Nibelheim story. Cloud throws Sephy against a wall, then he decides to jump in for God knows what reason when Cloud is clearly at the disadvantage (aka sword in stomache).

Kaysow wrote:That's it, yes. Last Order, a cel-animated OVA that came as a bonus with the mandatory-overpriced-first-edition in Japan.

Also, keeping true to the ending of the game; mankind shouldn't even exist anymore. That IS up for discussion, of course.

AuthenticM wrote:That's right. I've seen that, but I had totaly forgotten about it. I wonder why they've changed that. In any case, we'll probably see the whole picture in Crisis Core; so Last Order won't be able to be considered canon, as CC has a stronger say than it.

Kaysow wrote:I dunno what's going on with Crisis Core, but the people over at FFWA (I was banned permanently, but that was 5 years ago and I'm re-registered) who have read the script or something are telling us to be prepared for some sick retconning.

AuthenticM wrote:It can't be all that bad, mind you. They are going to delve deeper into Zack and Aerith's relationship, which is nice. And since Crisis Core is a full-fledged game out of some tiny bits of information from the original game, everything we'll see (new or retconned) will have a much better written script and will be polished a lot more than what we've been 'presented' in VII. That's why I have high expectations for this game.

I enjoyed VII a lot, but I have to comment that it's overrated and not as good as people think. It doesn't deserve to be on a pedestal. It was groundbreaking, but that's about it.

P.S. Advent Children is teh awesome.

Advent children was a disappointment for me. The characters lost their wit and appeal to better fit the typical anime character line-up. And the action I guess just isn't my style. Whenever everyone have infinite strength and everything, it looses its excitement. And it added very little to the overall narrative.

FFVII maybe overrated, but people use that as an excuse to bash it. It's my favorite RPG. I've played it through three times and loved it every time. FFVIII I never got past disc 1 because it was just too boring. FFIX I played through, but felt the story was fairly weak (and had the worst ending fight in game history). FFX was entertaining, but predictable.

While I like Final Fantasy VII a lot, it is mainly for the characters and story. I find the gameplay non-attractive and kinda boring. The materia system had potential, but it was missing something. The graphics were awesome at the time, but now they feel dated.

Sephiroth is downright one of the best villain in video game history along with Liquid Snake and Kane from C&C, and the best in the Final Fantasy series. Unlike every pre-VII Final Fantasies, he was not a mindless and maniacal jerk who wanted to do evil just for the sake of being evil. He was given a backstory with motives and personality. And he wielded the Masamune.

I liked Advent Children a lot. The fight sequences are just mind-blowing. While a was a little disappointed with the storyline (not enough substance), the fights alone make up for it.

I played Dirge of Cerberus and, quite frankly, was fucking disappointed (although I saw it coming). The gameplay was fucking shitty, the graphics too, and so was the soundtrack ('cept that last song from Gackt, which was kinda cool). As for the storyline, I liked the backstory of Vincent and Lucretia being delved into, but I found the addition of DeepGround unneeded. Still, I managed to beat it just for the sake of being up-to-date with the universe of VII. While I was disappointed in overall, the secret ending was really cool. If what Square-Enix said about expanding VII until its 20th anniversary (which is in 2017) is true, they have the potential of making things truly interesting.

I haven't played Before Crisis, but I find the addition of a backstory to the Turks very intriguing.

As for Crisis Core, you can bet I'm going to buy a PSP just for that game. It looks awesome, way more than Dirge, and the story looks spot-on.

And for those who don't know, Nomura himself hinted that Final Fantasy VII and X are in the same universe. See: http://faqs.ign.com/articles/698/698416p1.html

I hate the word overrated. I want to kill it =/

Anyway, okay game.
He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a man. There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery. Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the Muad'Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies' skins, the Muad'Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: "I am the Kwisatz Haderach. That is reason enough."

FFVII suffers from the same syndrome that Evangelion suffers from. Both are great and those who like them really like them. Those that hate them absolutely detest them and want them both to burn in a fire down in a whole new pit of hell.

I was a very late played to VII, I had heard it was good from a friend and he said "play this game it's good" and I loved it and thought it was awesome. It's not the greatest thing in the world but it I thought it was really good.

Both also have D-Type EVA armor, on a side note.

But yeah, I just finished reading that translated... whatever it was. I was aware about the connection between Final Fantasies X and VII, but not about how Cid's shuttle and Shera/Highwind being powered by Al-Bhed technology, or the arrival on a different planet.

Yup, pretty much.

Suffice to say; I love everything about this game, except how it's creators are violating it's estate with all their retcons, asanine story-additions and men with purty lips, skimpy outfits and vaginae. Fuck Tetsuya Nomura, fuck him right in his cocksucker head, there I said it, let's move on.

With all that, I've moved on the worship Eva and Suikoden 2 instead. See now why I'm worried about Anno returning?

At least Eva I've only been a fan of for half a year. With FFVII I had more than a healthy dose of history.

It wasn’t even that groundbreaking. Pretty much everything besides the graphics had been done at the same level or better in SNES cRPGs.

That movie is beyond awful. I mean, I tried to sit there and just enjoy the visuals but no; the whole thing is so fucking stupid that not even the above-average CGI can save it. Nojima needs to be fired. Soon.

I never understood why people thought he was so awesome. Both Kefka and Kuja are much better villains. That’s not even to mention non-FF villains like Albedo from Xenosaga.

Also, I think FFVII is a great game.

We just felt sad for the guy when we realized his madness wasn't completely unfounded. Kefka is just plain evil. That doesn't make him inferior tho, but might explain why even the ones who played FFVI might prefer Sephiroth.
Now it's plain to see that a villain with a sobstory is a tired element in RPG/anime.

Luca Blight is God.

Villains don't have to be complex for them to be successful; they just have to have character. Kefka had infinitely more than that then Sephiroth.

And yes, Luca Blight was pretty awesome.

Sephiroth was a walking bag of cliches.

Pretty boy? check.
Oversized weapon? check.
Pseudo-tragic background? check.
Spends most of the game "acting cool"? check.

Also, notice how he doesn't say anything right when you're going to fight him, that makes him a really effective and complex antagonist doesn't it? oh wait it doesn't.

And yes, Kefka was a great villain, and so was Kuja (despite being a trap), FF9 did much better than FF7 when it came down to having a "complex" main antagonist.

By the way, Advent Children is completely horrible, at least FF7 was half-decent until the end of the first disc, AC on the other hand was just a bunch of pretty graphics thrown together to make a poor, ridiculous story.

By the way, Kefka had a great theme song, and that's not even counting Dancing Mad, but Nobuo Uematsu gets WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much credit.
