Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I could see 'Sloom' by Of Monsters and Men being told from Shinji's POV.

SPOILER: Show
To be us to take this plunge, to forgive and forget
And be the better man, to be a better man, to be a better man

So love me mother, and love me father, and love my sister as well

(...)

So make all your last demands for I will forsake you
And I'll meet your eyes for the very first time, for the very last

Very EoE to me.

I met a man today and he smiled back at me
Now there are thoughts like these that keep me on my feet, that keep me on my feet.

Episode 24 with a dash of irony, imo.

I think that Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel fits Eva pretty well, though I think more of Asuka when I should hear Shinji.

There was an all-instrumental version of 'Signal to Noise' by Peter Gabriel that was used in Gangs of New York. It's been a favorite of mine, and I listen to it when writing. It occurred to me that it seemed to fit very well with NGE: that slow, instrumental build, into an incessant driving beat before it all cuts apart in electronic madness.

Lunascape - Into the Core reminds me of Eva every time I listen to it. Couldn't really say why.

Certain lyrics of Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction" remind me of Eva.

You take a mortal man (Recruiting Shinji)
And put him in control (Putting him in the forefront of saving the world)
Watch him become a god (Activating Unit 01)
Watch people's heads a 'roll (Kaworu, Gendo getting decapitated)

The earth starts to rumble
World powers fall
A warring from the heavens
A peaceful man stands tall
(Human Instrumentality Project)
"Damn it! Who do I have to screw around here just to get a stupid story?!" - Gail Hailstorm, author of the book You're Dead, I'm Rich (Scary Movie)

Welcome Home, by Coheed and Cambria. It's not so much the lyrics that remind me of NGE so much as how the song makes me feel on the inside. It makes me feel a little gloomy and really excited at the same time.

I completly forgot about this one, but it seems to fit. At least for me.

Katatonia - In The White

SPOILER: Show
" Are you in or are you out
The words are stones in my mouth
Hush little baby don"t you cry
Truth comes down
Strikes me in the eye

Turning season within
Brand new nails across my skin
But who am I to imply
That I was found
That I found you in the white

To overcome this
I become one with
The quiet cold of late november
If you don"t see
I"ll remain unseen
Until there"s time to be remember

So I had a green light
I was lost in city light
Not so far from a try
This is not our last goodbye

So I found you
Found a way al throught
The quiet cold of ineer darkness
& now that you"re here
It becomes so clear
I have waited for you always "

I don't know why, I think of Shinji and Kaworu.

I know I said that Girlfriend in a Coma was best LAS song, but that was a joke.
This one actually is about Asuka and Shinji.
Morrissey wrote:Girl afraid,
where do his intentions lay?
Or does he even have any?
She said "he never really looks at me.
Though I give him every opportunity!"
In the room downstairs she sat and stared.
In the room downstairs she sat and stared.
"I'll never make that mistake again, no."

Boy afraid,
Prudence never pays.
And everything she wants costs money.
"But she doesn't even like me!
And I know because she said so!"
In the room downstairs he sat and stared.
In the room downstairs he sat and stared.
"I'll never make that mistake again, no."
Also everything by Cold Cave has a goth and so Eva mood, like this.

Not sure if this has been posted. But I always like to give some exposure to The Fountain:

From The Fountain:

Death is the Road to Awe:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihF_aXi-Huk

The Last Man feat. Antony Hegarty (never made it into the movie nor OST)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDAO4Ql1cLU

Watching that movie, I couldn't help but think of Gendo was heading down the same direction as The Astronaut. Unable to accept the death of his wife nor accept his own mortality, he decided to depart on a journey for hundreds or thousands of years to xibalba in desolation in a space ark containing only the remnants of her in the tree of life in the hopes of resurrecting her when they get there.
"0" is the past, "1" is the future, but "the present" is nowhere - this is an undeniable logic.
Among the countless parallel lines, I settle on "blasphemy" as my choice.

I'm almost someone must have already proposed this one, but I can't help but to think about Evangelion when I hear this track, specially after reading a translation of the lyrics:

I'm surprised nobody's posted this yet, but Tempest by Deftones is an almost perfect song for EoE (yes, even more than Schism by Tool).

Lyrics (as well as audio):

SPOILER: Show
Take
Out the stories
They've put into your mind
And brace
For the glory
As you stare into the sky
The sky beneath
I know you can't be tired

Lay there
Stare at the ceiling
And switch back to your time
Just go ahead
Now try and taste it
I know it should be ripe

Thrust
Ahead

Turning in circles
Been caught in a stasis
The ancient arrival
Cut to the end
I'd like to be taken
Apart from the inside
Then spit through the cycle
Right to the end

I wonder just how you shaped it
To get back to your prize

Thrust
Ahead

Turning in circles
Been caught in a stasis
The ancient arrival
Cut to the end
I'd like to be taken
Apart from the inside
Then spit through the cycle
Right to the end

Wake for the glory
I know you can't be tired

Turning in circles
Been caught in a stasis
The ancient arrival
Cut to the end
I'd like you to take me
Apart from the inside
Then spit through the cycle
Right to the end

I had forgotten about that song until recently and was about to comment on it until I saw your post. Glad to see I'm another fan of both NGE and The Smiths.

For some reason, with this one Muppet song named Everyone Matters, I'm picturing Asuka as Gonzo, and Shinji as Kermit.

Somehow, the image of Asuka playing a guitar by herself in some mall, singing a song like that, and then Shinji coming in and singing more of that song like that, clicked within my mind.
