As much as I sort of enjoy the antidotes given by ADV or Funi and the gang, I still find it odd that there's an audio commentary for a foreign-languages bud of a movie.

I was referring to a commentary for both languages. Does that mean that a Japanese commentary with subtitles doesn't exist?
pwhodges wrote:Essentially, the answer is never.

As far as I recall, after the home video release, I don't think any films have been changed again in material ways (except going from the abortive 1.01 to 1.11, and the two-part release of EoE). "Renewal" (=Platinum) and the recent Khara releases of the series were rescans, but there is no change in content.

So we won't be seeing another 3.33 until after (3+1) when the inevitable (Evangelion-Rebuild complete...:uhh:...thing) comes around some time in 20??

I'm not a fan of director commentary, because the movie should be able to communicate the message sufficiently and thus cannot infer what he wanted to tell us, then the movie has failed. I'm also sure Anno wouldn't be able to say what he wanted to communicate in an audio commentary or an interview anyways - as he says, he's kinda inept when it comes to face to face communication.

For additional insight of the making process itself, there's plenty material out there. There's the Rebuild of Eva materials for each move, the Groundworks and the booklet with tons of character art, explaining some jargon and how they made the piano scenes.

^When I think Commentary, I think of content akin to the Alien franchise; a lengthy track that has both interpretation and describes the creative process.

On the Subject of Behind the scenes, I can't say I've seen any for Evangelion. (As in NGE and Rebuild)
(to my knowledge from the Eva 2.22 Blu-Ray) the behind the scenes is just a montage of scenes in various stages of development. (30min)

Does anything exist like, (The Beast Within: The Making of Alien [2003]) and (Making of Aliens 1986 documentary [2003])
(3hours) each and has insight from various craftsmen/cast members, props, cinematography, ect.

From what your saying, Evangelion essentially has the same thing only in literature but not video? :(

That's the Rebuild of Eva segment on the BDs/DVDs.

Apart from the Rebuild of Eva not really, no.

For 1.11 and 2.22 there were the CRC books, parts of those have been translated and posted here. There's a lot of information in there - most of all just gives the idea that the main thought they put into it was "we're winging it, lol" "I have no idea what I'm doing" "That particular part was handled/thought of another person".

Which kinda makes sense, because only after 1.11 they decided to go into a completely different route with the new movies - which in the beginning were just meant to be shinier remakes of the series with a new ending. So there were many, many, many drafts for 2.22.

For 3.33 we have no comment from Anno, only some translated comments from the movie pamphlet - where especially Megumi Ogata shared some interesting information. Apparently, Anno shifted his vision for Q completely after 3/11. He wanted Ogata to play Shinji's role as if she was responsible for all the destruction caused by the triple-catastrophe. I guess the theme for 3.33 might be resilience after facing responsibility, because you can (not) redo -> exemplified by Kaworu's empty promise of resetting the world with the lances/spears.

1)Does this site have a page/list dedicated for translated merchandise? I have no idea of what exists.
(20 years franchises must have a ton of related material)
2)Do you have any recommendations?

Anno doesn't do audio commentaries. Heck, he doesn't even do narrated making of documentaries.

The own brand Wiki is a good place to start. For other stuff, just type it into google, it'll pop up. Just type in "CRC 2.0 Anno translation" for example.

It's been a long time, I read through them... But aside from Anno, I personally found Tsurumaki's comments to be pretty insightful in places as well. Just don't expect too big revelations. Most of the stuff they tell you is really directly linked to the making process, very little is actually about what they thought... Except, there's a big emphasis on the creation of Mari and Asuka's role in certain places. But most of that information is again just the process of writing and fleshing out these characters, and how their role changed over the course of redrafting the script ~10 times.

I have a question for anyone who has seen the dub. I remember at the theater screening that they changed Maya's line about hating young men, and that really ticked me off. Did they change it on the new dub?

Well, like I said, I was also letting performance dictate how I read the subs. In that sense, I think they support the idea that this is a less kill-happy Asuka when it comes to the case of Shinji Ikari.

Also, thanks for the clarification on the language. :)

View Original PostReichu wrote:The interviews originate from the Japanese collected volumes.

I was referring to the 4 Omnibus, which include volumes 10, 11, and 12. In it, Carl Horn writes as though he had organized a follow-up interview with Yuko Miyamura, as well as an interview with English voice actress Tiffany Grant, and had them comment on Asuka once again.

Car Horn, in Eva Omnibus 4, wrote:Volume 4 of the mange featured an essay by Asuka Japanese voice actress, Yuko Miyamura, written in 1997, when the Evangelion phenomenon was still young. But Asuka remains an iconic character even in the incredible future year of 2011 and, with her recent arrival in both the anime and the manga, I thought now might be an appropriate time to follow up—this time, with Asuka's English-language voice actor, Tiffany Grant, as well.

He goes on to thank both Grant and Miyamura for the interviews, as well as his translator, Christine Busby. The interview with Yuko isn't followed by any indicators of being published in another publication, and certainly expounds upon what she said back in 1997, even detailing how the character has changed in her eyes since then.

Can someone quickly fill me in on what the overall impression of the new 3.33 English Dub is? I kinda fell out of eva for a year or so and haven't been keeping up, sorry! ^_^

My copy just shipped, so I'll have it Monday. I am curious, is there anything I should be paying attention to when I watch the dub? I read some posts about the commentaries being essential to full comprehension of the plot?

Overall, it appears to have both adequate performances by the dub cast, and largely accurate translation, so overall, worth a watch

There aren't any commentaries on the disc. The Japanese filmmakers have never done any commentaries for Evangelion.

Only Eva 2.22 had an English VA commentary, and that was mostly the actors talking about their character very much in a similar manner as a fan would, but while having the experience of sounding nice behind a microphone. (Though, I did learn through the commentary that the English VA for Asuka befriended the Japanese VA for Asuka. So that's interesting.) But there's no extra-material information in the commentary that helps anyone understand the series any better.

There are no English special features for either of Funimation's releases of Eva Jo. And based on what everyone here says, Eva Q is also equally absent of English special features. (It's a shame too, because I heard they were going to put US theatrical screening reaction footage on the disc somewhere.)

I'm just glad that Funi didn't replace the telop slates of the film's title and "next episode preview" this time.

They changed it again. She says, "No excuses! Run your station, not your mouth! Damn whiners. I hate these young men."
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

I just looked that up the other day, but thank you.

It really pissed me off they changed it in the original dub. That line is a great line to the fans of the original series.

I don't quite understand the reference? Could you explain? I never got that it was a reference to the original series.
