It's honestly the best thing on the disc. Sometimes I'll throw it on on the background when I want something Eva related playing without actually paying attention to it.

Kaworu pronounces Longinus as "Lon-jai-nus" instead of "lonj-inus."

The former always made me wince, even though it's a standard Anglicized pronunciation. If you mean to contrast it with the pronunciation that the original (i.e. Japanese) dub uses, it would be "LON-gi-noos" (with the hard "g" and long "u"). Ironically, we have Japanese people getting much closer to the projected Latin pronunciation than the English speakers who have the phonemic advantage...

And the dub?

*Kaworu says he, the 1st Angel, was utterly defeated by the 13th. He does say later that he became the 13th Angel.

D'ya know, I don't recall anyone ever making that suggestion, even though the Lilin being the final angel comes up in the series or associated materials. I'm not sure what to make of it - though that's true of Kaworu's remark in any case!

I don't think Kaworu's saying the Lilin are the 13th Angel as he says that's him later and it's still in the subs. It's just him being cryptic, I think.

Watched it again tonight and took some more notes and observations. I really like the way this dub turned out.

@Reichu: I checked into the lance vs. spears thing. It's always "spears" in sub and dub both.

*The subs for Misato's "do nothing" line are "don't do anything."

*Asuka is great when she wants to be a show-off. "Man, they give me this awesome new unit, and then they put me on maintenance duty!"

*Wunder and Wille are pronounced "Voonder and "Veelay", respectively. Asuka finally says something in German!

*Kohji's line about Kaji is dubbed as: "That was absolutely insane. Kaji said she was nuts, but I think he sold her short." The sub is basically the same as UTW's. She's more interesting than Kaji said.

*When Mark.09 attacks the Wunder, Misato calls it "the real deal." Some of the background chatter is subbed, and it says they're preparing for a second wave out of the Mark.04's camouflage coccoon and that the Mark.09 is slowly crawling along the hull like it's searching for something. So it sounds like Mark.09 was hanging out with the Nemesis Series.

*I mentioned before that they play up the Mark.09/Unit 00 confusion. When Misato repeats that Rei is gone, Shinji says this: ""You're lying! She's right there, in Unit 00! How can you be so blind!?"

*Interesting bit from the subs: When Mari shoots Mark.09 and figures out what it is, she says, "I knew it, it's Adams' Vessel!"

*Sakura begs Shinji to please never get into an Eva again in the dub, but when the line is subbed during Shinji's mindscrew, it says "Don't pilot no more Evas, all right?" She really does take after Toji! Sakura's pretty great.

*Subs: Fuyutsuki says Yui is "now part of Unit 01's pilot interface." Dub he keeps saying Rei and Yui are "within the system of Unit 01." He also says something to the effect of "Yui, is this what you wanted?/I hope this is what you wanted" in both. Was Yui a mastermind of this plot too?

*Shinji's memories of Yui's experiment have been erased. Can't remember if there was any doubt about that, but there it is.

*Checked the subs when Asuka says Shinji already caused one Impact. "Brat Shinji, do you want to cause another Third Impact!?"

*Subs: When Kaworu's pondering the two spears looking alike, he says this curious line: "We need a matched set of spears, Cassius and Longinus. But all we have here are two identical spears." So Cassius and Longinus are a set? Also this: "You need to let it go. Those aren't the spears we need."

*After getting back-handed, Asuka says, "You'd hit a woman when she wasn't looking? You bastard." "You bastard" was "you suck" in the theatrical version. Quite a difference!

*Sub-Gendo talking about Seele's true nature: "Though your souls have taken on different forms, you are still products of the forbidden fruit." I wonder if it relates to that "cleansed of the original sin" business from 2.0?

*Some of the background chatter says Wunder's AT Field is destabilizing while it's being assaulted by the Vessel. That would explain why the AT Field can repel Unit 02's explosion but not the Vessel, I suppose.

*Mari upon emerging from the hole and seeing Wunder under fire: "Hoooly crap, this situation is right on the verge of FUBAR."

Not much more insight I can offer here without transcribing full scenes, and that's just not worth the effort with the dvd widely available on Tuesday. But I hope this release can finally put a dent in the idea that Wille hates Shinji and wants to kill him. That IS what he thinks, but they come across as being pretty reasonable if very wary of Shinji and frustrated with his naivete. Misato is still angrier than I think she should be, but Sakura, Ritsuko, and Asuka help make up the difference.

Kaworu says that he was defeated by the 13th Angel. I imagine that he is referring to "King of the Lilin" Gendo. later he says he has become the 13th, which, if it is Lilin, may also explain why the choker activated. Without his Angel magic, the choker found that it was being worn by a trigger who was causing an impact and so BOOM trigger, no more

But it is clearly implied that Kaworu does still have some angel magic, given the way he was depicted leaving, and the "we'll meet again" remark which presumably will be followed up on.

Plus he's able to change the shape of the spears and take control of Eva 13 even though he and Shinji are supposed to be locked out of the unresponsive control system. The DSS Choker does still identify him as the 13th Angel but not Shinji. Best I can guess, he's saying he was "defeated" by the 13th Angel by being cast down to that status and sealing his doom, or the 13th is referring to Eva 13. It does sorta defeat him with its Angel-making shenanigans, I guess.

Just a bad line.

So, I've uhm... looked into the dub, as it surfaced on... very legal streaming sides... *cough*
I have to say, it's alright, but I feel like the Germans overall did a better job. While the script is perfectly fine, some of the English voices are generally less subdued, and thus, less ambiguous in their delivery. Sakura is a little too forceful (and less moe), Kaworu is too snarky-gay (and less etheral, kind), Ritsuko and Misato is a little too resentful (and less cold), Mari is too catty (and less playful), Asuka is too angry (and less hard-boiled), Rei doesn't hum her words with little intonation in the dub, she talks far too human.

Generally they talk very hard and press the words with lots of intonation and elevated anime-esque pronounciation - which works for dramatic effect, but it kinda loses its natural delivery.

It's nitpicky, but it lends the cast a more overtly vibe of angry desperation and less the vibe of clinical endurance.

This might be a case of the VA still trying to do Rei 2 even though Rei Q is not the same character, at least that's just my guess.

Is the first line from the dub, sub, or both? In the Japanese, he clearly says that he's been demoted from 1st to 13th (or "fallen to", more fluently).

That's just a direct translation of what Mari says in Japanese. Nothing groundbreaking.

That's almost exactly what he says in the dub. "Though you may have changed the shapes of your souls, you are still lifeforms gifted with the Fruit of Knowledge."

I have no idea what they were thinking with Kaworu's line or why they missed that but got it right in the rest of them. Here's that whole exchange:

You sure that "fallen to" was supposed to mean demotion? Because saying he has "fallen to" the 13th sounds like he could very well mean he was defeated by the 13th.

Kaworu says 堕とする, which is a "verbed" version of 堕, a kanji having the meaning "degenerate", "lapse into", "descend to", etc. (Furthermore, 堕ちる is an alternate way to write the verb ochiru, to fall or descend.) It is nothing as specific as "defeat" (there are other words, like 倒す, taosu, for that), but rather indicates a change of state from higher to lower. Given Eva's reference pool, the audience is possibly meant to draw an association with 堕天使 (datenshi, "fallen angel") and maybe even 堕罪
(dazai, "the Fall of Man").
