I used to be on EGF Discord all the time, but I have less free time now, and have gotten into some other Discord places... pity I missed you, SSD. There are indeed a few fandoms I don't enjoy, but some I do. Madoka for instance, has some interesting people.
I never got into social media, just out of lack of interest, really. I guess a place like this could count, to an extent, as it is a venue for socialization... But I don't really see the point for me of a place like Facebook to connect with people I know in real life. I do that in real life, rather than digitally.

My first fanfic: Neon Genesis Craig-Insertion

I dabbled in one once to chat with some close friends (rather than vent) but I saw sooo much ridiculous fandom drama and unpleasantness "behind closed doors" from some other accounts that it seriously affected my mood. I deleted the account in maybe a week, I think
Yeah I've heard that twitter is not that much better with regard to fandom drama though I didn't know about the locked accounts. Though after having done the tumblr thing I don't think I could do twitter its just way to stressful and I admit now looking back that there were days on tumblr when I felt really bad mentality I just didn't know why at the time because the website kind of hood winks you because of the colours and lay out and you get addicted but then you don't know why your addiction is so bad and you get deeper and deeper in the rabbit hole and become more deeply unhappy to the point that you just can't see the wood for the trees.
About multi-shipping: For most characters I like them with a particular character and that's it, though I do have 2-3 characters (from MGS) that I think multi-shipping actually fits them in that 'multi-faceted', relationships aren't static, way. (Cough, one of 'em is Big Boss.) For people to get so...uppity and defensive about shipping in general is just bizarre to me because it's anything but serious, you know?
Yeah this I relate to as I'm game for any pairing but I do have my favourites at the top of the pyramid so to speak but I agree the defensive side of shipping is bizarre hence why I wonder if the websites this drama happens in are to blame because they are they using clever colour scheme psychology to keep you deeply hooked? Maybe I'm over thinking that but I do wonder at times....
I don't seem to have any Admin powers, but I'll probably split this to avoid clutter (if everyone else agrees) since it's such an interesting subject on its own
Yeah sure I'm game for it

Oh well...
I've never really boarded the social media train. But as far as I can see from distance, those media turn people... well, into ants or equivalent. Ants are social after all. Still a single ant is simply a dumb robot, which is able to do some only simple tasks, like poking another ant with antennae to find out what to do next. And apparently this is how social media work, Tweeter especially. You must be quick, you must be brief, and thus you must not think too much, 'cause what you have to do is reacting on stimuli. Thinking is, after all, indecent for other social users, who don't have time to wait for some verbose elaborate produced by some thinking being. Or "thinking" being. Who "thinks" here, LOL.
That's why I prefer 'roaching on some forums rather than joining the social hivemind. Because all hiveminds strip their members away from their autonomy in order to process themselves. And as a hivemind evolves, its members evolve too, but to adapt to their new environment, which is what? Well, yes – hivemind. Eventually they will be unable to survive on their own, like cells of my body can't live a life of their wild amoebas ancestors, even if they rebel and go full cancer.
Gosh, I can't believe I've written this. Anyway, your pet is cute, @silvermoonlight.

Even though I love Sailor Moon it's fandom is one of the worst I've ever seen. You've got people arguing over dub vs sub and people picking apart the anime frame by frame and subtitle by subtitle. And then you have certain older fans who have this snotty stuckup we've been fans longer so we're better than you attitude. It doesn't help that an admin on a Sailor Moon forum I was a part of cyberbullies people for not posting links to fanart. Plus, in the past she's abused her admin powers on numerous occasions. Recently she made one of my friends leave the forum because this admin and her friend were cyberbullying my friend over the writing style he used in his fanfiction. I don't get why she and her pet troll feel the need to act like grammar nazis. :/ I also hate how all the big Sailor Moon fansites have their own little twitter cliques and they refuse to associate with anyone outside their cliques.

I really hate when you get god mods I've seen that on other forums and it changes the whole vibe of the whole forum and can make it really unpleasant. That thing you mentioned about grammar and people chipping away at other peoples stories I've seen before on the Godawful fanfiction forum years ago the whole place was there just to bash and mock fanfiction and put people down and I don't think it served any good purpose as it didn't help anyone improve there work as none of the criticism was constructive.
Thank you

Thread Split from FML [8]! We are a go!
@ PrincessAsuka: These days especially, it's good to link back to fanarts/fanfics for the source, because stolen content has become such an increasing problem. Other than that, though, that forum sounds like a huge mess and I'd say you're better off hanging out on a more "chill" site like EGF. (Sigh)
Ahh, no stress about missing me on there! I'm finding myself preferring ye olde forums to things like IM-style chatting, anyway (unless it's one on one with a friend).
Maybe it is just an age thing. I've given up trying to figure out what the deal is with my thought process
I have seen "God Modding" on other forums or just social media in general. It's always rather bizarre. I remember when I still RPed (on Twitter, actually, though IRC RP was overall good times, too) 90% of people were chill but one person got on a power trip (through DMs) about my RP-style allegedly being shitty when it's like....Dude, you're RPing, too. No need to be so high and mighty, now? (If you really hate what I'm doing so much, just...don't interact instead of making such a fuss? Pretty damn simple.)
When it comes to shipping and fandoms, this is my one slight annoyance that I mentioned earlier: I will say it's pure hell to have rare pairs, especially when they're actually canon in your franchise of choice
@ SilverMoonlight: That's a very interesting thought psychologically-speaking how color schemes can keep you hooked on social media. I mean, they say red and yellow evokes hunger, which is why McDonald's uses those colors.

You can over ride the psychologically but you have to realize its fooling you mentality if you can't its gets serious I believe face book has it to but it's less addictive, unlike tumblr which drags you under. The strangest part is when you quit you have one day off not knowing what to do then you strangely feel fine and realize you don't need it and have no desire to return.
I recall there being a huge back lash when Legend Of Korra went for its ending and not in the way you'd expect it was the fans of Korra/Asami attacking and gloating at Korra/Mako fans who had become the rare pair as this pairing was in the earlier seasons it was sad to watch and though I wasn't big on Mako and felt his character made some real stupid screw ups he was not an evil guy and these fans still had the right to there pairing.

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)
I heard about that backlash, but I never saw it. A lot of people were kind of enthused by it, however, simply because Asami and Korra developed a chemistry no one on the writing staff had anticipated. I think more people were sold on it than not. Even afterwards, while there were definitely people who gloated (I...don't know why. You're fictional OTP is a thing. Yay?), I still see Mako and Korra fanart. And, as always, there's the third option: Mako/Korra/Asami. Our One True Tripling....

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)
Oh, totally this! I've taken brief social media breaks before (especially if I'm travelling) and it's weird when you notice what a "weight" is lifted off your shoulders from not stressing over that sort of thing.
The whole mentality of gloating over canonity of 'ships or not is strange to me, too. On one hand, sure it's always fun if you like a pairing that's "officially" supported, but at the end of the day, all that stuff is fictional, so what does it really matter? Por que no los dos is rather fitting, haha.
I've actually seen friendships end over shipping wars, which is just...beyond me. (It feels like priorities need a serious readjustment in those situations.)

My thoughts exactly when I heard about things unfolding (The worst was feeling there was no way I could alleviate that situation, either. People are going to do what they do, unfortunately.)

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)
One of the smartest lines some one ever said to me regarding online was. "Go away for a few days chill out by the time you get back you will not give a shit about a certain issue bothering you and no one will remember it." He was right but this only worked in the early 2000's when social media wasn't as big but now you have to be so careful what you put down because some one on twitter or tumblr is bound to screen shot you.
I think this is why people get so stressed because you never know when the hammers going to come down on you and suddenly all the world can see your post and your attacked on all fours sides at once for something you may not have known enough about or where just uneducated on or have never been taught.
The other troubling issue is the idea that people can not change as you get old tweets and tumblr posts dragged up and people going well s/he is still homophobic, racist, sexist ect. Now I understand if these posts are recent you have cause for concern but if there 6-8 years old there is a very good chance that person may have changed there ways and may be deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Some things never die on the Internet, and it's why you have to be so careful in what you post. It's what makes Facebook so insane to me: people have to own everything they say, and some of the things they say there are absolutely shocking. Under their own names!

Yeah, I'm always so shocked by Facebook, too
Also "fun" is allegedly the Library of Congress is preserving all(?!??!) of Twitter as an archive unless something changed...That just seems like such a stressful thing unless people delete their accounts or what have you. I mean, why not ask if people want all their random memes or political talk saved for future generations to see?

Not to go to much in to politics but I've seen that recently due to the whole deal with the gun issue in US currently going on and lets just say some of the facebook comments leave a lot to be desired. Its also why I have nothing to do with social issues any more online and I avoid them like the plague, because not only is there intense stress there and the idea that you'll be attacked if you disagree with an issue (Looking at you tumblr/twitter) but I think the shouting and screaming doesn't always help the issue and can make things even worse sometimes.

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)
Bear in mind, a lot of that is being deliberately stoked. It's tough to grind down through the 'Russia meddling' issue without it becoming political, but the fact of the matter is...it's there. Those bots and false accounts sit on both ends of the spectrum, and it's not uncommon to find Russian bots having vicious arguments with each other.
And that's the point: to take an issue, and turn it into a divisive gash.

I see a few people from my family sharing/saying things that just really baffle me. There is such a big problem too with people just reacting and not looking into issues, they just see a thing and share it without stopping to think "Is this actually true?"

It's easy to get caught in that 'heat of the moment' demand to throw something out there. I've done it, too. Emotions are really a devil for us in that respect.

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)
Oh definitely, I imagine I've been guilty of it too. Going purely off of a headline or seeing something and telling someone else, "Did you hear about X", it's very easy to do it and it is something I do try to catch myself before doing now. If I see something that does grab my attention I will read the article or do some research just to be sure.
I am like silvermoonlight though, I do try to avoid social issues online. In certain situations I might make a comment but I stay away from any big debates because it's just not worth it. This is the same when it comes to fandom to be honest, I avoid things like shipping wars and discussion because for me writing my fics and being part of this fandom is for me to enjoy myself and relax rather than get angry.
I'm certainly open to discussing theories but if I see it heading towards argument territory then I'm out.

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)
I confess I've done this and tumblr makes that easy because your given clip bait and you know its a knee jerk reaction when you press that button and fav. I think that was the first time I felt something was wrong on there as I started to look up articles posted and realized that the tumblr ones were well out of date or plain untrue. Granted some are the real deal but the insanity and argument going on around them means the real issue gets lost in translation. An example of this is people using feminism to suite there own agender and warping it in to something else that's really awful just so they can have a crack at men and show them nothing but pure hated and its jarring to watch it unfold.

Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy.
