Well, I think I just made the 12 hour mark. This is the Post Script for the newest volume of the Evangelion manga, the Post Script is written by Carl Horn. EvaGeeks and EvaMonkey are mentioned in it on page 5 of the Post Script.

This was an interesting read but Carl got one thing wrong: Sadamoto himself stated that the anime was first.

The anime started production first. Carl could have meant that the manga came out first.

Yes, I too was annoyed when people just assumed I'd know that: Carl Gustav Horn is the guy who edits the North American English official translation of the NGE manga. He's closer to being "one of us" and a fan, than a Gainax guy.....which means he hosts panels and stuff and has done a great job of like, looking up glossary information on the Lance and such, but it's closer to "a smart fan trying to piece together stuff because Gainax didn't tell us anything, and we're thankful that SOMEONE is trying to tell everyone else" as opposed to what I wished was true: Sadamoto would just flat out tell us things. But he's done a lot and "spreads awareness" (haha) about Eva. He's cool.

I doubt that you could find anyone in the public English-language NGE fandom who goes back longer than Carl; I was amazed to discover a post on j.a.e from the time that the original airing of the series concluded in 1996, where he discussed his 'WTF' reaction to the last two episodes. Who else around here can claim to have been into NGE while it was actually being broadcast?!

yes, I am shocked and amazed that Carl Horn actually was one of the "1st Gen" fans who watched the series as it came over one gloriously bad fansub at a time bootlegged from Japan week by week; the "Good Ol' Days" of yore when anime was so hard to obtain that anything was a treasure, much less, Eva. (all the 1st Gen fansites are dead; EvaMonkey, EvaCommentary, EvaGeeks, and AnimeNation forums, are all "2nd Gen" fansites. The difference is that 1st Gen revolved around the actual release, while 2nd Gen revolved around various DVD releases)

eva.onegeek.org isn't 1st gen? What about evaotaku? They didn't have many webhosts back then so not just anybody can pay $30 a month and have a website hosted with a content manager and high bandwidth. Most fan sites were on hosts such as geocities or tripod.

how many still get updated? the fact that several Gen1 geocities pages still exist from 2001 (the Stone Age) simply because no one has taken the content down, but they haven't been updated in all that time, doesn't mean its "there" anymore

How did English speakers get hold of eva back in '96 then? Were they getting fan-subbed VHS or spending a few days downloading an episode on pre-broadband internet (was that even possible back then?!).

Please tell me I'm genuinely interested!

dude....they used fansubbed VHS tapes.

Granted I guess some must have used the internet, but it really wasn't up to specifications back then; it was more for coordinating where to pick up your VHS tape.
